Work Text:

Moving to the desert was the best decision she ever made, she would swear that up and down. It was where her love lay, the heat and the freedom were her best friends. It simply spoke to her in a way nothing else ever could.

But God. It could get lonely quickly. Those people going into the top of her shop never spoke to her, not even pleasant greetings. Obviously she wasn’t expecting them to buy out her entire stock, but even being acknowledged would be nice. The desert trader is kind, a bit of an eccentric fellow, but she was so starved for relationships that she spent a good chunk of her time with him.

But truly, the main source of her comfort and familiarity was Emily. When she first moved to the desert, Emily was up nearly everyday. Though she never said it, she thought Emily was definitely a bit angry she took off, though the angel she was, she never said anything. At that time, Emily was as lonely as she was, before she started that part time job she was either sitting behind the desk with her, or sewing alone in her home. Gus letting her work there… It was such a kind move.

And it really did seem to help Emily. In their phone calls she spoke of how lively Pelican Town was becoming, and in turn, Sandy told her of how more and more the desert really did feel like home. Though, there was still that unspoken tension that made the miles feel a lot longer than they really were.

But Emily, sweet, angelic, sometimes intelligent Emily, she had a perfect solution, for the aching hearts and the overwhelming distance. Every Monday afternoon, the bell to her shop would ding, and out stepped Emily, a bigger smile on her face than the last time she saw her.

And that continued today, with the bell going, and Sandy immediately slipping out from behind her desk to greet her with a hug, Emily responding with a chaste kiss to the cheek. She fished out Emily’s gift from under the table, new rich fabrics of a deep blue she had purchased a few days before from the Desert Trader. She really wondered if Emily would ever get sick of mostly getting various cloth, but every single time, her face would light up and praise would come out.

Emily knew her through and through, and while it was fabrics for Emily, it was always flowers for Sandy.

Daffodils, Crocus’, Sweet Peas, they were the beauty she loved. Second only to one blue haired woman, though. And today, what did her angel bring today?

Sunflowers. Beautiful sunflowers, as bright as the desert outside. Sunflowers… She held back a little tear with it, holding the bouquet closer to her chest, dipping her head into them so her burning cheeks were a little hidden. Clearly the flowers weren’t hiding much, Emily smiled so softly, hugging the fabric to her chest as well, but not hiding her blush, instead proudly displaying it.

When Emily finally had to leave, and neither had any more excuses to keep the other there, the room's feeling seemed to change, but maybe it was simply because she was the only one in the room. It wasn’t long before her eyes drifted towards those flowers, those beautiful flowers…

God. She loved that woman so much. Maybe it was the distance that made the flowers look better, or maybe it was the woman herself.
