I Love You

Summary:

"I love you" the last words he said to her, the words that made her do everything from that point onward

Work Text:

“I love you.”
She remembered the way the
words sounded,
falling from his lips,
the way she felt hearing them,
the last words he said to her,
the last words she'd ever thought
she'd hear coming from him.
“I love you.”

She knew it had to be a mistake,
a misheard phrase,
delirium caused by a loss of blood,
he couldn't have meant it,
could he have?
It didn't matter,
it was too late,
he was dead,
still...
what if...
what if he'd meant it,
what if he had loved her,
wouldn't he have wanted her to
do something,
anything,
everything
to save him,
to change his fate?

The time turner was heavy,
the sand a pale beige,
this one was too big to wear,
too big to hide,
she didn't care about hiding it,
she didn't care about anything
right now,
not that this was wrong,
illegal,
if she was caught...
she wouldn't get caught
she had to know!

One spin,
two,
three,
the world spinning around her,
rewinding,
until,
until...
that moment,
he was there,
facing off against their common enemy,
wand in hand,
he was the true master of
the Elder Wand,
she watched,
silently,
hidden,
waiting,
until he fell,
until he was alone,
she knew her younger self
would be here soon,
soon he'd say those words,
would he still say them,
if...
if this went how she planned it?
She held the vial to his lips,
wandlessly casting the charms,
healing him,
saving him,
all the while keeping him
from realizing who she was,
she wore a stranger's face,
used a stranger's voice,
anything to keep things
from getting more complicated
than they already were,
vanishing into the darkness as
she heard the sound of her
own footsteps
running,
rushing,
to his side.

“I love you.”
The words hadn't changed,
she faded into nothingness,
having changed everything,
having saved the man she loved,
the man who apparently
loved her back.
“I love you too.”
