“Oh how you wound me! I would never do anything even remotely gross out here!”
Star sighed dramatically, closing their eyes and feigning hurt. Nate just blushed and chuckled a little at how adorable they could be.
“Well we did meet by you getting held in the office overnight because you were suspected of a crime.” He mumbled, snorting quietly and planting a featherlight kiss on their cheek. Star laughed nervously and scratched the back of their neck.
Nate smiled in amusement while they avoided eye contact.
“I-I’m teasing, Star. I told you a long time ago that I would never let that time influence who I know you are,” He rubbed his thumb over their knuckles, and he felt his heart do a double take in his chest when Star looked embarrassed. “You’re a beautiful person,” Star looked even more embarrassed, and his chest swelled with pride. “An-and I’m so grateful that you were a suspect. Though I’m sure that was an unpleasant experience, I-I met you, s-so I’m glad, if that wasn’t clear.”
He looked away to hide his blush, and Star just glanced over at him before they surprised him with a gentle and chaste kiss.
Nate’s face exploded with a flush of red, and Star just smirked at being able to get him back. They gently tugged on his hand and pulled him out of the truck, shutting the door quietly. They held him in place and made sure he wasn’t going anywhere before they smiled.
“Stay here and no peeking!” They said excitedly, going around the side of the truck so they could hop in the cargo bed.
He smiled as his cheeks burned, whether from the cold or his embarrassment, he couldn’t tell, but it was pleasant all the same.
Star jumped down and he jumped, snapping his head towards them to see if they were okay. They grinned and grabbed his hands again, gently tugging him around the truck and making sure he kept his eyes on them.
Nate panicked when they nearly tripped, and Star leaped to make sure he didn’t peak until they said so.
“A-are you okay?” He asked worriedly, and they nodded with a huge smile on their face.
“Never better baby, now,” Nate’s cheeks burned hotter at the name, “You can look.” They gestured to the cargo bed, and Nate’s gaze followed their hand.
He felt his eyes get teary when he saw a setup comfortable enough to sleep in.
Star’s eyes widened and without checking his feelings, they reached their hand up and gently took his cheek, turning his head so they could inspect the tears in his eyes.
“Oh shit hu-hun, I-I’m so sorry, I didn’t upset you did I?” They wiped the tears away from the corner of his eyes and they pulled him in for a hug.
“No, not at all!” He reassured breathlessly, “I-I just…you’re too sweet to me, you know that?” He mumbled, burying his face in their shoulder and pulling them closer to him so they knew that they could never make him upset.
“I’m not ‘too sweet’, I just care about you and I want you to do things that you enjoy.” They mumbled, holding him just as tightly.
Nate squeezed his eyes shut and he mumbled a muffled ‘thank you’ into their shoulder. Star hummed in amusement and they kissed the crook of his neck happily.
“Why of course, my love.” They grinned and pulled away from him, quickly getting into the cargo bed and carefully helping him up. Nate chuckled at how careful they were and sat down so they could take off their shoes and keep the blankets somewhat clean.
“I know you said you like stargazing, so I decided to put this together so you could have some fun,” They pulled him back to the blankets and pulled out bug spray from under a pillow. They moved his arm away from his face and gently sprayed it on his arms. “Y’know…since we’re always so busy lately…”
He rested his forehead against theirs once they were done, and he sighed in relief.
“I’m glad I wasn’t the only one who noticed that.” He mumbled, and Star smiled.
“Yeah…” They pulled away and gently laid against the surface that separated the cargo bed and the seats in the front. They pulled him to rest his head on their lap while they sat up to look at the stars of the city.
Nate's eyes traced over every star in the sky that he could see.
It was nice to have a compromise when stargazing.
Star was a Demon. They had seen stars on both Planes.
Nate was a human. And while he saw both city lights and stars, the stars were always so few and far.
Because of that, it was still baffling every time he got out of bed because Star wasn’t there, only to find them on the roof of their house to look at the city lights.
Humans took away the light of the stars a long time ago.
But Star admired that they gave back their own.
Nate’s eyes focused on the brightest star he could find, and he hummed in content against its leg. They reached their hand down and absentmindedly played with his hair, making his face flush and his heart hum happily in his warmed chest.
“I love you, Star.”
It was the first time in a long time that he had said that.
Star hadn’t said it back the first time, and he respected that. Saying it just made him feel like they would think that he was pressuring them into saying it, so he didn’t.
But sometimes you just have to say things in the moment.
Star hummed, and they paused their admiring to admire the moonlit goofball that rested on their lap, and they knew.
It was time.
“I love you too, Nate Wexler.”
The sky and the city looked at each other, watching their children grow up. They nodded, and came to an understanding to dull a little so they wouldn’t ruin the moment.
Even though nothing could.
