Scheming

Summary:

The Pogues are in their sixth year at Hogwarts, and John B throws a party in the Gryffindor common room. The friend group can sense the tension between Kiara and JJ, so they decide to do a little matchmaking.

Work Text:

JJ groaned loudly much to my annoyance.
“Will you shut up?” I snapped.
We were in potions with Professor Snape. The only thing that made the class slightly more bearable was that my friends were in it, “The Pogues”, we called ourselves. Snape's class was split between the Hufflepuffs and Gryffindors, so the lot of us were together. JJ, John B, Pope, Sarah, and me; Kiara.
“This class blows.” the blonde haired boy sighed.
John B nodded his head in agreement before looking up at the group, a mischievous look in his eyes.
“Oh god.” Sarah muttered with a grin plastered on her face. “What are you scheming?”
“I’m not scheming anything!” The brunette replied, feigning shock at the girl's comment.
Pope looked up from his cauldron skeptically. “You’re scheming all right.”
“I am not scheming. I do not scheme.” John B paused.
“Wait for it…” Pope whispered in my ear.
The boy looked pointedly at Pope before pausing, “I was just thinking maybe-”
“There it is.” JJ spoke quietly so as to not alert their teacher of the fact that they obviously were not working.
“Kegger.” John B stated plainly.
Sarah at John B, “Where the hell are we getting beer?”
I grinned at JJ. Sarah was a bit of a new addition, she didn’t yet know what we were willing to do to break the rules.
“You’ll see.” He simply replied to his girlfriend.

When classes were over for the day, JJ and I walked back to the dining hall alone because John B had apparently forgotten something in his last class. What was weird about it was he wanted Pope and Sarah to come with him, but not us.
“You excited for tonight?” I looked over to him.
“You know it.” He grinned.
I looked down, remembering why it was just the two of us.
“That was weird, right?” JJ spoke before I could.
I turned my head to see the others hurrying up the stairs. If I listened closely enough, I could just hear their voices, but no cohesive words. “Yeah, I think JB might be scheming again.”
“Whatever, I’m starving.” the blonde said nonchalantly.
I rolled my eyes, “You’re always starving.”

Once the sun set, John B and JJ set out on their journey to find alcohol. Pope was out at the library to do some last minute studying for a test he apparently had on Monday, leaving Sarah and I.
“Why do I get the feeling you three are up to something?” I looked questioningly over to the girl in the chair beside me.
She merely giggled and looked into the fire.
“Saraaaah.” I groaned.
She shook her head and leaned into the back of the chair, closing her eyes.
I gave up, changing the topic. “Things with you and John B going well?”
Her face went red and she smiled, “Yeah. I really like him. Actually, our three month anniversary is coming up.”
I envied her, the guy I liked had been with just about every girl except me. Jesus, that’s sad. “I’m happy for you guys. I wish I was in a relationship.”
“If you want to be with someone, then just ask them. They’d be crazy to say no. You’ve practically got boys falling at your feet.” I rolled my eyes.
“But I actually really like someone… and he has made it pretty clear the feeling isn't mutual.” I said spitefully, pulling my legs to my chest and looking into the flames.
Sarah got up from her chair and tackled me with a hug. “Don’t look so depressed, I’m sure he’d say yes if you just got the balls to ask!”
“I don’t have any balls!” I screeched from underneath her, laughing.

Little did I know, JJ and John B were having a very similar conversation.
“Dude, Kie clearly likes you.” The boys were arguing while loading up on beers they found hidden in the kitchens.
“Bro, stop pushing it. She doesn’t.” The blonde disagreed.
“Yes she does! She’s always staring at you, or talking to you, or eye fucking you…” He trailed off looking at JJ’s red face. John B grinned.
“Shut the hell up.” the boy said as he made his way out of the small storage closet, his arms full with things that students probably shouldn’t have.
John B sighed looking at his stubborn friend. “Whatever. You still have the keg in your room, right?”
“Yeah, it’s somewhere under my bed.” JJ replied.
“How the hell did you fit it under your bed?” John B questioned.
JJ smirked, “It’s magic.”

It had been a few hours since the party had started, and I was a little tipsy. To be honest I’ve been restraining myself from getting too drunk. I’m aware of the fact that if I get drunk there is a high probability of me saying something I’ll regret.
I was gathered around the fireplace with my crew, who were a great deal more than tipsy. “Sarah, truth or dare?” John B slurred. Drunk truth or dare, a Pogue favorite.
“Uh… dare!” She giggled.
“I dare you to kiss me.”
I gagged dramatically. “You two are gross.”
Sarah grinned. Her lipstick was smudged as she pulled away from her boyfriend, arms still around his neck. “Kie.”
“I’ll pass.”
“Too bad. Truth or dare?” She laughed.
I gave in, it couldn’t hurt, right? “Fine. Um, truth?”
“Who was the boy you were talking about earlier?”
I shot her a death stare. “No one.”
She was still laughing when I looked at JJ. His expression was stone cold and his jaw clenched.
“I’m gonna go get another drink.” He muttered.
“JJ! Fuck.” I hurried up after him but not before I saw Pope and John B smirk at each other
I turned around to flip them off before storming after the blonde.

“JJ! JJ, stop! What is it?” I yelled over the music while he took a hearty sip of his beer. He looked up at me, before walking in the other direction.
“Wait up!” I grabbed his arm in an attempt to make him slow down.
He pulled away from me, looking at my face. I might have imagined it, but his gaze might have flickered to my lips once or twice.
“JJ?” I looked up at him.
“Follow me.” He said, leading me out of the crowded common room.
We closed the door and the music was muffled. The silence suddenly felt much louder than the speakers on full volume.
I sighed. “What was that all about?”
Our eyes met before he looked down at the floor. “Nothing- it’s stupid.”
“You can tell me anything, you know. I’m always here.”
“I just kind of thought…I wanted to think that… I don’t know Kie. I hoped this was going somewhere.” He looked back up at me, ocean eyes shining with the faint candle light in the hall in which we stood.
“What?” Did I hear him right? Were my ears working?
“I- I guess I thought we… might become something. Something more. But I guess there’s someone else.” His eyes shimmered with what I came to realize as tears.
I looked at the boy I had been in love with for six years. Six years of pretending not to notice the way he made me smile like no one else had before. Six years of telling myself he would never even consider me, not even for a moment. Six years, all leading up to this moment.
“JJ…” I whispered.
“I know-” He turned around wiping his eyes on the back of his sleeve, sniffing. “I told you, it was stupid.”
I reached out for his arm, taking his hand gently in mine, intertwining our fingers. He turned back to face me, surprised. My hand that wasn’t occupied went up to his face, taking in his features, his sharp nose and plump lips. The way his cheeks were dusted pink from the direct contact and probably also due to the alcohol in his system. My eyes lowered to his lips again, wondering what they would feel like against my own.
His eyes were wide as I closed the gap between us. “Kiara-?”
I kissed him and he kissed back.
“You. You’re the boy. My boy.” Our lips moved in harmony with each other. He tasted like beer and weed, but I probably did too. I wrapped my arms around his neck and felt his hands lower to my waist, holding me gently. He tasted so good, I wanted more, more of him, I wanted it to last forever.
“Ahem.” We heard a voice from behind us and rapidly broke apart, panting for air. The Fat Lady had returned to her portrait, looking at us skeptically.

I hurriedly walked back inside, JJ’s hand in mine, giggling profusely.
“Christ.” He muttered, grinning. I grabbed another cup of beer, thinking I might need it for wherever this is headed. JJ didn’t reach for one, much to my surprise.
“No drink for you?” I said questioningly, looking up at him.
He shrugged his shoulders, before putting an arm around me. “I’ll share with you.”
I laughed and rolled my eyes. “Whatever, dick.”

Once we had made our way up to my dorm room JJ rolled onto my bed. My roommates were still downstairs, so we had the room to ourselves. He opened his arms and I gave in, lying in bed next to him. This could not be farther from how I expected tonight to go.
“I can’t believe you liked me this whole time.” I whispered as he wrapped his arms around me.
“Bold of you to assume.” He chuckled.
“Shut up.” I tried to sound angry, but my promise to myself to not drink more than necessary had been completely ignored by now. My arms felt weak and my head light as I pressed into my mattress.
“I didn’t like you this whole time.” Hazy eyes met. “Kie, Kiara, Kook Princess, I have loved you from the day we met.”
I used every ounce of strength left in my sleep-deprived body to lift myself up and hug him, nestling my face into his neck. “JJ, you have absolutely no nicknames, but I could not have said it better. Well, I probably could, but I’m totally wasted.” He laughed and our lips met again. “I love you.” I whispered into our kiss, because it was true.

Sarah had pulled John B and Pope into the dorm her and Kiara shared.
"What is so important?" John B muttered, annoyed.
"Oh my god." Pope said spotting the two in bed together. JJ's arm snaked around Kiara's waist, her head buried in his chest.
"It actually worked." John B said, amazed. "I'm a genius. Pope, you owe me a galleon."
"Damn it! I hoped you'd forget." Pope groaned.
"Boy, do I love a good scheme." Sarah grinned, looking back to the two curled up together.

Fin.
