Work Text:
It was past midnight judging from the Devildom moonlight shining through your bedroom window. A delightful breeze carried it’s way through your open window towards your bed on which you were sitting criss cross, your back slouched at an almost uncomfortable angle with a book in your hand. It was a book that Satan had given you just hours prior. He said that it was a rare book from one of your favorite authors, only 50 copies had been published and spread throughout the three realms. It had cost him a small fortune and plenty of hours scouring the internet and bookstores to find one but he told you it was all worth it when he got to see your face when he gave it to you.
You had immediately thanked him and gave a quick hug before darting back to your room. Eager to start reading.
It had been around four hours since then and you could feel your eyes getting sore and a mild headache forming from the low light you were reading in but that didn’t stop you from continuing to read. You couldn’t help it. It was just too interesting of a book.
You only stopped when you heard someone lightly knock once on your door, barely audible before opening it. You reluctantly tore your eyes away from the page momentarily to be greeted by the sight of Mammon, his bed head being very prevalent, and his eyes being clearly tired.
“Y/N? You awake?” His groggy voice rang out in the quiet room.
“Couldn’t sleep?” You asked. Picking up a random receipt that was on your nightstand to use as a bookmark.
He nodded his head. Not moving from his place by the door. “What are you reading?”
”Just a book Satan got me,” you answered. You patted the bed beside you. “Do you wanna lay down by me?”
He nodded his head and sleepily walked over to your bed. Laying down and scooting over to where he was laying on his side facing you, his head resting on the soft throw pillows you had forgotten to take off your bed.
He outstretched his arms towards you before asking, “can we cuddle?”
You had to admit you liked this side of Mammon where he was more comfortable with being affectionate around you rather than him putting on the whole tsundere act.
You leaned over him and kissed his forehead. “Of course we can,” you said, picking up your book and setting it aside so it wouldn’t get lost in the sheets never to be found again.
You scooted closer to him and brought him into your arms, moving so you could lay on your back with him on top of you and his arms wrapped around your torso, his head laying on your chest listening to the soft rhythm of your heartbeat and your steady breathing.
It wasn’t uncommon for Mammon to do this. Especially when he got nightmares of him being exiled from the celestial realm. He’d find his way to your room on nights like this and into your arms.
Your hand had almost instinctively starting running through his messy white hair. Mindlessly brushing his hair with your fingers and getting out the occasional tangle.
“Is this okay?” You asked him.
“Very,” he replied. His voice muffled by your shirt. A long, comfortable pause fell over the two of you before he spoke up again, “Tell me something.”
”Like what?” You answered softly.
He shrugged, looking around for an answer before his eyes landed on your book. “Read to me… please.”
You smiled at him before picking up your book and opening it to where you placed your makeshift receipt bookmark. “Do you want me to start over so it’s less confusing for you? I don’t mind.”
He shook his head. “There’s no need to start all over. I just wanna hear your voice.”
“I didn’t know you were such a fan of my voice,” you teased.
Mammon grumbled a complaint as he snuggled closer to you. “Just start reading, would ya?”
You couldn’t help but smile and lean down to give him a chaste kiss on the lips before you started reading loud enough for him to hear. He let out a sigh of content as your hand found its way back into his hair again, massaging his scalp.
You weren’t even a full page in before you heard snores coming from Mammon. You lightly tapped his cheek with amusement making him grumble in his sleep.
You endearingly smiled at his actions and put away your book. Turning off the lights in the process. Once you got back situated you threaded your fingers through his hair once more and fell asleep with Mammon.
