Work Text:

“Her heart bloomed sunflowers, so she would always be facing the light.”

Kyo watched as Tohru happily ran through the sunflower field her face lighting up from pure joy. Tohru had managed to convince Kyo, Yuki, Machi, Haru, and Rin to come with her to the local sunflower field, surprisingly no one put up a fight about going in fact they seemed almost excited to go.

“Tohru watch where you are going yo-“ Kyo cut off mid-sentence as he watches Tohru trip over her own feet. He ran over to her side and helped her up from the ground. “Are you ok?” She nods while brushing off the dirt that got on her skirt.

“I’m fine! See nothing is wrong, just clumsy.” She says with a bright smile on her face. Kyo smiles fondly at her smile and takes her hand in his.

“Did you find any flowers you want?” He asks as they walk together. Up ahead of them they can see Rin yelling at Haru and Machi watching Yuki try to reach a flower that caught her eye.

“Not yet, I am looking for the perfect one.” He watches as her head swivels from side to side, trying to find what she thinks is the perfect flower. As they continue walking, they both talk about their third and final year of high school. Once they graduated the two were off to start their new lives in Nikko where Kyo would be training to take over Master Kazuma’s dojo when the time is right. The two of them were terrified of how things would work out, but they knew if they were together, they could get through anything.

“Right there!” Tohru points to a flower that towers over her small frame. “That one is perfect Kyo!” The sunflower is a perfect mix of yellows and red with a perfectly circular center. Kyo nods and makes his way to the stalk of the flower, reaching up he breaks the steam at a good length before handing it to Tohru. As he turns, he sees Tohru looking around at the tall flowers, she seems to be standing in the center of a circle. Every flower around her is facing her direction, almost as if she is the sun they are growing towards. Again, he finds himself smiling at Tohru, how fitting it was that they looked like they were growing towards her. From behind him he heard a small click and jumped slightly. He turned his head to find Haru standing there with his phone in his hand.

“I’ll send this to you.” He simply says before walking towards Rin, who looked ready to fight the small child who picked the flower she was going after. “Rin! Leave the child, I’ll find you a new one.” Haru yells as he walks her direction. She lets out a visible huff before turning towards Haru.

“It better be perfect.” Haru rolls his eye.

“I will make sure it is up to your standards.” She nods and takes his hand before walking off to find a new one. Kyo turns back towards Tohru and finds she is walking his way. He holds out the flower and she smiles before taking it.

“It’s perfect Kyo, thank you.” She kisses Kyo’s cheek before taking his hand in hers once again. He watches as she does her best to match his stride, laughing every so often when she would slightly stumble.

“You would think your martial artist of a boyfriend would help you work on your balance.” Yuki says as he and Machi walk up to the couple. Tohru giggles and shrugs while Kyo mumbles something along the lines of ‘stupid rat’. “I’m just saying you think he’d be stepping up and doing better by you Tohru.”

“I’m not sure even with Kyo’s help Tohru would stop tripping. I’ve seen her trip on nothing but air more times than I can count.” Haru says from the other side of Yuki.

“He could at least try and help her; I’d hate to see her get hurt from falling.” Haru, Rin, and Machi nod, agreeing with Yuki. Kyo lets out a frustrated sigh before letting go of Tohru’s hand.

“I’ll be right back.” He mumbles before walking off. Tohru nods, knowing that Kyo just needs a moment by himself. While he has gotten a lot better about his temper there are sometimes where he just needs to walk away and take a breath, and usually these times are whenever his family is involved. When Tohru turns back to her friends, she sees Haru smirking.

“What Kyo didn’t want to play anymore?” Rin rolls her eyes and smacks the back of Haru’s head.

“He probably didn’t want to be around the people saying he isn’t doing enough for Tohru. The guy can’t help she is a complete klutz.” She snaps back before walking towards Machi and then Tohru. “Come on let’s leave these losers, I think I saw a small petting farm set up near the back.” Tohru’s eyes lit up and she followed her two friends, leaving Yuki and Haru alone.
When they reach the back of the field, they find Rin was correct, a local farmer had brought some of his baby animals for people to come see. Tohru lets out an excited squeal before heading over to a baby rabbit.

“Look at this one Rin!” It was a small blonde rabbit that reminded Tohru of Momiji when he was a rabbit. When Tohru didn’t hear a reply from Rin she glances up and sees Rin looking at a horse that was in the pin next door. The horse was a beautiful black with a dark mane. Tohru watched curiously at what Rin and the horse would do. Ever since the curse broke the zodiacs found that they no longer attracted the animals that they were. Rin slowly placed her hand out for the animal to smell, it took a sniff before shaking its head and turning the other way. Instead of showing any emotion Rin simply shrugged before walking to Tohru. With Machi distracted by the same horse Rin whispered to Tohru.

“I know I shouldn’t feel this way but I’m almost sad the horse turned away from me.” Tohru quickly shook her head.

“It isn’t bad you feel that way, the horse spirit was a part of you for so long, you have every right to miss it sometimes.” She says with a comforting smile. Just then they heard a yelp from behind them. They turned around to find Haru holding his shin next to a calf.

“You stupid cow, what was that for.” Rin laughed before walking over to her boyfriend.

“It was probably offended by your presence.” She helps him get over to a seat before pulling his pants leg up to look at any possible injury. “You’re fine you baby. It’ll just be bruised.” She goes to stand up, but Haru stops her.

“What, you aren’t going to kiss my booboo.” Rin rolls her eyes before kissing Haru’s cheek.

“That’s all you get, now get up.” Tohru laughs at the couple before looking to see if Kyo came over with the two other boys. She spots him in the corner of the pin watching as a small litter of kittens run around in the hay. She walks over to him, placing her arm around him.

“Feeling better?” He nods and looks down at Tohru.

“Sorry I walked off so suddenly.”

“You have nothing to apologize for, everyone needs to take a breather at some point!” She said with a big smile. He nodded not feeling any need to talk anymore. Instead, he opted to watch as Tohru’s face lit up while she watched the kittens.

Over the last few years Kyo has found his own form a sunshine, the smile of Tohru Honda, the love and light of his life.
