Work Text:

The Paperboy opened his eyes to the blinding light of the fluorescent ceiling lightning. At first he almost thought he was in heaven but then remembered there probably aren't any fluorescent lights in heaven. The last thing he remembered was being caught and stunned by the robot police, the unbearable feeling of a bat against his head. There was a heavy ache on the back of his head and his body was weak. He felt like there was a weight on the lower part of his body and he forced his head to face the lower part of his body and he saw the young house painter leaning on his waist. His black ponytail was spilling on the white blanket draped over Victor's aching body and his eyelids were closed peacefully, breaths coming in and out calmly. He had taken one of Victor's hands in his much paler one. What a beautiful sight, Victor thought, amusing his weary mind. Victor didn't want to wake the beloved house painter, yet he still gave his hand a weak squeeze and caressed the back of his hand.

"Victor." called out the man, his voice coming out not more than a relieved whisper.

"Edgar." Victor replied, tilting his head.

"You're-" he paused, "I was worried about you." Edgar said, lifting up his head ever so slightly. "I'm sorry. I blew your cover."

"Th-there's no need to apologize. It w-was an acc-accident." Victor freed his hand from Edgar's and started caressing his cheek.

"But- if it wasn't for William you could have been arrested," his voice got weaker "or-or even worse, beaten up."

"Hm. But I'm fine, a-aren't I?" Victor ignored the unbearable ache at the back of his head.

"Thankfully." said Edgar, looking away. For a few moments, they fell into silence. Victor felt as if he could spend dozens of more silent moments like these, just him and his beloved, staring at his icy blue eyes.

"When a-all of this is over," Victor said, "I'll m-make you the h-happiest man ever. We'll be t-the most mundane c-couple ever. I'll take y-you out on the m-most cliche dates e-ever." Edgar laughed.

"Yes. Together, when we see the sun."
