Work Text:

Sage is frowning. Her brain hurts and her hand is becoming sore from flicking her pencil between her fingers. Nothing makes sense. She hates Spanish class. It is doing her head in. So boring and tedious and everything Sage generally hates in a subject. She stares at the mess of random letters and squiggles on her worksheet.

She understands nothing.

The bell for lunch break is ringing loudly in her ears, and the sounds of students chatting while filing out of the classroom makes Sage feel like she’s in a club. Not that she knows what it feels like. Although everyone has already left, Sage wants to finish off this god-awful worksheet and submit it before the end of the day, so she doesn’t need to catch up on the weekend. The pencil she was playing with falls out of her grasp and rolls slowly towards the edge of the table, but she can’t be bothered to stop it from falling off.

A hand makes a barrier behind the pencil so it falls into the hand rather than onto the grey carpet.

“Hey,” Reyna says. Sage looks up.

“Hi.”

“How you holding up?” Reyna has her eyes glued to Sage’s empty worksheet, and there’s a hint of humour in her tone.

“Fine,” she grumbles in response. The purple-haired girl (who’s awfully tall, for some ridiculous reason) grabs a nearby chair and pulls it up to the opposite end of Sage’s table, sitting so that her stomach is pressed against the back of the chair. It’s kind of attractive, Sage thinks.

“You don’t seem like you’re doing very well,” Reyna says, tapping her pointer finger against the piece of paper. She has very pretty nails. Should Sage be complimenting this girl in her head so much? Is that normal? Sage makes a whining noise and slumps over her desk, eyebrows knitted together.

“Who are you, anyway?”

“I’m Reyna, do you really not remember me? Surely you wouldn’t forget a face as pretty as mine?”

Sage glares at her. So, this classmate of hers was an egotistical bitch.

“Don’t look at me like that. I was about to offer to teach you Spanish, but now you’re making me change my mind,” she continues, placing her chin in the palm of her hand, “unless you’d rather fail?”

Sage doesn’t know how it came to this. She’s sitting beside Reyna in Reyna's room on Reyna's chair. Holy shit, she can feel her face burning, and honestly, it feels different than normal embarrassment. They’re both sitting beside each other, Sage on the fancy gaming chair (Reyna insisted), and Reyna standing over her. Kind of. She has one arm propped on the top of the black chair and she’s leaning down, which seems to be something only a tall person with long-ass limbs could achieve. Sage isn’t comprehending anything Reyna is telling her, she’s only focusing on the taller girl’s fruity perfume and really gorgeous hands. Arms. Hair. Everything.

“Sage, are you listening?” Reyna asks, flicking Sage’s forehead and leaning even further down so she’s eye-level with her. Sage goes even redder, shifting herself so she’s pressed up against the back of the chair and away from Reyna.

It doesn’t work. Reyna moves closer.

“Hey, if you don’t listen, I won’t teach you anymore. You’re an awful student.”

“Maybe I’m not the awful student, what if you’re the awful teacher?”

Reyna tries her best to contain her snickering, and moves herself so she’s in front of Sage, and both her hands are pressing against the armrests. She’s trapping Sage.

It’s embarrassing. Really, Sage can feel her entire body go red. She swears even her knees are turning red, if that’s possible. Reyna notices.

This is bad. Really bad, she thinks. Sage’s brain fizzles out and she just stares.

And then Reyna leans in further.

And Sage gets even redder.

And then Reyna moves away.

And Sage is sort of disappointed.

She ends up squeezing her eyes shut and willing for the redness to go away.

But then the light she sees through her eyelids disappear?

And then there’s a soft feeling on the corner of her lips, but then that disappears too before Sage can open her eyes.

And once she opens her eyes, she sees Reyna laughing quietly.

“You’re too obvious, really.”
