A Good End to an Awful Mission.

Summary:

Brigitte comes back from a stressful mission, and is able to actually rest.

Work Text:

As the door of the Overwatch ship closes Brig sighs, slouching against a wall and taking a moment to examine their wounds. It was day 3 of interfering with Null Sector plans, and they were getting a little weary on the frontlines. Angela had been nothing but sweet, and the rest of the team had been a delight as well, but Brig was still exhausted and ready for some time off. Their armor was worse for wear but they remained pretty much unharmed otherwise, save for some general soreness in their arms and legs.

“Brigitte, are you alright love?” Lena leans over from her chair to check in on the other, a look of concern plastered on her face.

“I’m okay, just ready to get back. Super hungry.” Brig muses, feeling the weight of their fatigue kicking in.

Lena hums in quiet consolation before getting up to hang out with Winston, and Brig is left alone for the duration of the trip. Not that he minds, he's more than happy to get a few moments of rest.

Finally they land once more at Gibraltar, pulling into the hangar as the other members of Overwatch rush to greet them. Hana is one of the first at the pad, pulling Genji away from the group leaving the ship — most likely to play video games. Cassidy and Hanzo are there as well, for no particular reason than to say hello to the returning team, it seems. Brig offers the two a small wave as they trot off to their workshop, a little more tired than they wished to show their fellow teammates. They're almost certain Cassidy notices, as Brig catches him leaning over to whisper something in Hanzo's ear. That was fine. If they sent someone to check up on them, Brig would make sure they were ready to go in time.

The workshop is rather cold for autumn, and as Brig enters he can hear Mitzi yowling at his return.

"Mitzi? What is it sweetheart?" They call out, setting their shield and flail down on a table, shuffling over to the small kitchenette they set up for when they get hungry.

Mitzi joins him in the kitchen as Brig searches through a cabinet for something easy to make, meowing for attention from the agent.

"I need to eat, Mitzi.. I'll give you all the attention in the world once I've got my noodles cooking." It wasn't anything extravagant, the meal they picked out. Brig just planned to make some cup noodles to hold them over for now. Mitzi meows in what seems to be annoyance, trotting over to their food bowl and leaving him be.

The next few minutes go by relatively smoothly. Brig is able to get the kettle to work and fills up the little styrofoam cup for the ramen and sets it to the side. Now free, Brig begins striding back to the main part of the workshop to remove his armor and check out the damages. It's a little hard to remove, but once he gets it onto the armor stand it's clear to see that his torso took a pretty bad beating within the last few days. The metal for his breastplate is dented, scuffed, and even torn in some places. He sighs, aware that he won't get time to rest because he'll be too busy fixing up his armor.

Brig is pulled out of their small stupor by the door opening, and looks up to see a familiar face step inside.

"Brig! Glad to see you back in one piece. How was the mission?" Lucio is staring them down, cheery as ever and carrying a large thermos. He's rocking a rather casual outfit, a loose dark green hoodie and a pair of jeans, wearing sneakers instead of his normal skates. It wasn't too shocking to see him in casual wear, but it was still nice.

"Ah, hi Lucio. It was certainly a mission. We drove the Null Sector out for now but Winston really needs to stop putting Angela and Genji on the same team." Brig sighs, stepping away from the armor stand and readjusting his tank top. "What're you doing here?"

Lucio tilts his head in confusion, as if the answer was the most obvious thing in the world. "I'm here to hang out with you? You just had a big mission, I'm not going to just barge in and expect you to do something for me. You need to rest, and what better way to rest than some hot chocolate and a nap?" He grins, and Brig can't help but feel like a little weight was lifted off their shoulders. To have someone visit them with the intention of just hanging out was new and refreshing.

"Oh- alright! I've just gotta eat first but we can take a rest after. Should probably feed ol’ Mitzi too.” Brigitte begins to move back to the kitchen, disregarding his armor. Lucio follows close behind, setting the thermos on the counter and leaning against it, watching Brigitte as they checked on their noodles, which weren't quite done yet. Instead they decided to take a minute to feed their cat, but when they looked, Mitzi's food bowl was already full.

"I've been taking care of your cats while you were out. You've got nothing to catch up on on that front!" Lucio smiles, offering a thumbs up and moving to sit on the counter, kicking his feet slightly.

Brigitte is thoroughly touched by the gesture, not used to someone going out of the way to take care of her cats. Before Lucio joined it had become a job nobody wanted to do when Brig was out on a mission. "Oh, well thank you, Lucio! That crosses a lot off my to-do list then."

"Happy to help!” Lucio’s a little sheepish, staring down at his sneakers. Brig is a little too focused on finishing off her small meal to notice, finally stepping over beside Lucio and leaning against them as she blows on the instant ramen to help it cool down.

Brig steals a glance over at the other, offering a comforting smile before elbowing them lightly. “Seriously. You’re my hero for that.”

Lucio, very caught off guard by the comment, can’t help but laugh nervously, waving a hand dismissively. “HAHAHA - You’re just saying that really haha it’s seriously nothing.” They weren’t uncomfortable, just very obviously flustered.

The awkward display wins a chuckle from the squire, who stands up and shakes her head, a wide grin plastered on her face. “You are so cute, Luc!” She comments before taking a second to down a good bit of the instant noodles.

The compliment was not helping Lucio’s current state at all, and they tried to remain calm by hopping off the counter and grabbing a couple mugs, getting the hot chocolate all set up. However, that didn’t stop them from admiring Brig, a little more focused on her than the hot chocolate. This resulted in them almost over-filling one of the mugs, but catching themselves at the last second. Once both mugs had been filled(and looked mostly even), Lucio stepped back around, holding one out for Brig.

“For you! It’s just the mix stuff but I hope you like it.” Brig is just about done with the noodles by now, taking a second to toss out the cup before taking the mug, beaming.

“It’s just what I needed, thank you. We don’t have to stand at the counter the whole time, you know that, right?” She holds the mug in one hand as she walks over to her couch, shooing one of her cats away before sitting down and patting the spot next to her.

Lucio follows close behind, sitting down carefully next to her and relaxing against her, taking a sip from his mug. The thermos definitely did it’s job, because the DJ finds themselves appalled with how hot the drink is. They frown, blowing lightly on their mug as Brigitte laughs. The pain on their tongue seems to subside upon seeing the other so happy, and they smile in return. “You uh- you feeling better?”

Brig reaches for Lucio’s free hand with her own free hand, squeezing it reassuringly. “Much. Thank you.” She takes a sip of her hot chocolate, barely bothered by how hot it was, instead basking in the comfort of her friend.

The two sit in a comfortable silence, Lucio only so quiet because they were so focused on Brigitte’s hand intertwined with theirs. Maybe she didn’t feel the same pounding in their chest that Lucio felt, but that was okay. They were able to cheer the squire up and that was more than enough.

Once the mugs are empty and the two have talked enough about the mission and how things have been at the base, Brigitte leads them both to her loft bed she keeps in the workshop, and they curl up together for a nap. Not something entirely common, but neither seemed to mind. Lucio mumbles something indistinguishable as they settle in, head under Brigitte’s chin and curled up beside her, and Brigitte can’t help but grin, planting a small(totally platonic) kiss on Lucio’s forehead.

As she drifted off to sleep, Brigitte couldn’t help but silently thank Cassidy for sending the DJ to check in on her.
