Work Text:
The regatta was starting early in the morning, and Kristoff was ready to turn in. He had been sitting around the room watching TV all evening, since he hadn’t brought a swimsuit to join people at the hotel pool, and he didn’t want to join them at the bar later because he didn’t want to spend the extra money, and besides, he wanted to be well rested in the morning. He really hoped he wasn’t going to have to deal with hungover teammates.
He turned off the TV, and went in and locked the bathroom so that Olaf wouldn’t accidentally walk in while he was brushing his teeth. Olaf had already walked in once since they’d arrived a few hours earlier, so it was just easier to lock the door while he was getting ready for bed.
As Kristoff started brushing his teeth, he heard a knock on the bathroom door, a jiggling of the door handle, and then nothing. Hopefully there wouldn’t be drama over locking the bathroom door. He didn’t need that tonight.
He changed into the cotton shorts and t-shirt that passed for pajamas at his age, and unlatched the door and stepped out. The room was nearly dark except for the light coming from the bathroom, but he could see someone in the bed on the side of the room by his bag. Kristoff shook his phone to turn the flashlight on, and realized that wasn’t Olaf. He couldn’t exactly tell, but he was pretty sure it was Hans.
“Why are you naked in my bed?” Kristoff asked without thinking.
Hans groaned. “I’m not naked, I’ve got boxers on, and what are you doing in my room?”
“This is my room, and I’ve been here all evening.”
“Shit, must’ve gone in the wrong door. Why didn’t you lock it?”
“Olaf already got locked out once today, so I left the lock thing in the door.”
“Fine, sorry, I’ll get dressed,” Hans muttered, nearly knocking the room phone off the center nightstand as he got up.
“You’re drunk, aren’t you?” Kristoff observed more than asked. It was pretty obvious.
“I had a few, yeah,” Hans shrugged.
“The night before a race?”
“Look, I needed to relax. I ended up getting driven up here by my ex.”
“Wait, who on the team have you dated?”
“Nobody on the team,” Hans explained, “but I was getting a ride with Elsa, but her car broke down, so her sister drove us. We dated last year.”
“Elsa has a sister?” Kristoff asked.
“Yeah. Really high maintenance if you ask me,” Hans said.
“I really don’t care about your love life,” Kristoff said, “but I do care if you’re going to have an off day tomorrow. So get out and go back across the hall or wherever your room is.”
“Fine, see you in the morning,” Hans said.
“And drink some water!” Kristoff shouted after him.
A minute later, he heard someone struggle with the door a few times, and then Olaf came in.
“I figured it out!” Olaf exclaimed.
“Great!” Kristoff said, “sorry, I meant to leave the door propped open.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Olaf said. “How was your evening?”
“Fine,” Kristoff said. “What about yours?”
“Good!” Olaf said. “I got to catch up with Anna.”
“Who’s Anna?” Kristoff asked.
“Elsa’s sister. We were on the team together back in high school. She might come back to be the fourth coxswain so we don’t have to keep borrowing high school students. She’s great, though. She promised she’ll come watch the regatta tomorrow.”
“Oh, that’s nice,” Kristoff replied. “Anyhow, I need to sleep. Night, Olaf.”
