Or

A short mutual pining early Valentine’s fic

Notes:

The comments were so nice on my last supercorp fic I decided to write another one so hope y’all enjoy. It can be considered a prequel to the previous one or a stand alone.

Work Text:

Kara Danvers was definitely and undeniably hiding something from her best friend and Lena was determined to figure out what it was. For the past week or so, Kara had been acting stranger than usual around her, stuttering a bit more, laughing a bit too loud at her jokes, and starting to shy away from her touch.

After all they had been through, Lena was disappointed to come to the realization that Kara was hiding something else from her. When they had slowly but surely patched up their relationship following their Supergirl secret fallout, they had both promised each other no more secrets and Lena was mostly holding up her end of the bargain.

It might have been hypocritical of Lena to expect nothing but honesty from her best friend while she herself was hiding something, but she was hiding this secret for a good reason. Lena Luthor was definitely and undeniably in love with Kara Danvers. She knew better than to expect Kara to reciprocate her feelings, so she kept them a secret. Telling her would only make things weird and strain their already semi-fragile friendship. Mother had told her growing up that there were good lies and bad lies. Good lies, like the lie that Lionel was her real father, were ok to keep when the truth would have been hurtful.

Lena had a few theories on what the secret Kara was keeping from her was. Her most likely theory was that Kara was seeing someone. It was only about a week away from Valentine’s Day and it wasn’t a long shot to think that someone as beautiful as Kara had found herself an admirer. It also made sense the way she was less touchy with Lena, now that she was in a relationship she didn’t want to be as affectionate.

Whatever the secret was, Lena was determined to figure out what it was. She needed to approach it gently, the last big secret had almost destroyed their friendship completely and she couldn’t afford to go through this again. Subtlety and prying the secret out gently would be the key to getting Kara to open up.

“You’re hiding something from me.” Lena blurted out during their weekly movie night with all the subtlety of a gunshot.

The response was a resounding crash and then a small “ouch” from her kitchen as Kara had knocked her entire spice rack off of her kitchen wall in her attempt to grab some salt for her popcorn. “What makes you say that?” Kara asked nervously while attempting to clean up the spilled bottles and spices off of the floor.

“Well, for starters you’re gripping my dust pan so hard you’ve cracked the handle.” Lena noted as she made her way over to help clean up the mess.

“Sorry, I’ll replace it,” Kara said reflexively, “and I’ll put your shelf back up.”

“Don’t worry about it, darling.” Lena dismissed with a wave of her hand. After the mess was cleaned up, Lena led Kara over to the couch. “Remember, we agreed no more secrets.” She gently reminded Kara as she fidgeted with her hands in her lap.

“I know, I know. So um, Valentine’s Day is coming up soon.” Kara mentioned cryptically in response.

“I’m well aware, about a week away. Do you need to cancel our plans?” Lena asked, the two of them having already agreed to spend it together having dinner and watching rom-coms all night. If Kara had a new romantic interest like she suspected, Lena assumed she would rather spend it on a date than having a girls night with her. Already rearranging plans in her head to spend the night crying into a glass of Pinot Grigio with her good friends Ben and Jerry.

“Kind of,” Kara said, finally looking up from her lap, “I’ve recently realized something and I don’t think I can hold it in anymore.”

Oh no, Kara had discovered Lena’s feelings. It all made sense now, why she was acting awkward around her, avoiding her touch, almost forcing herself to laugh at her jokes or even talk to her. Lena started to prepare herself for the worst. Apparently their friendship could survive almost anything except for unrequited feelings. “And what would that be?” Lena asked, her throat feeling dry as she almost croaked out her response.

“It’s about us, during the time we spend apart, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so lonely.” Kara said, meeting Lena’s eyes, seeing tears start to well up in her gorgeous blue eyes. “I’ve had my world collapse in on itself and being apart from you felt like I was losing everything all over again.” She sniffled, reaching out to take one of Lena’s hands in her own. “You were right when we said no more secrets and I was wrong to keep it from you. I just didn’t know if you felt the same way.”

“The same way about what?” Lena asked, not daring to get her hopes up.

“I love you. A lot. In a romantic way. And if you’d have me, I’d love to take you out on a date for Valentine’s Day.” Kara asked, a small hopeful smile on her face. “Not that I don’t love hanging out in with you, it’s just that I think someone as wonderful as you deserves more on Valentine’s Day.” Kara quickly added.

Lena was so dumbfounded she could barely respond. Opening and closing her mouth to try to get the words out. This was too good to be true. Did Lex orchestrate this? Was she on a prank show? “You have feelings for me?” Lena finally managed to get out.

“Yes, and it’s totally ok if you don’t! We can still have a movie night instead!” Kara offered, starting to pull her hands away from Lena’s.

“No!” Lena shouted so loudly that she startled herself, grabbing Kara’s hands before she could completely pull away. “I just, I thought you figured out I had feelings for you and you didn’t want to be friends anymore.” She said shyly.

“You have feelings for me?” Kara asked hopefully, a dopey smile stretching across her face.

“I have, for a while now. Even more than that, I am completely in love with you, Kara Danvers.” Lena admitted. To make sure there was no doubt that Kara knew how she felt, she leaned forward and pressed her lips softly to hers.

“So, is that a yes?” Kara smiled, wiggling her eyebrows suggestively after she pulled away.

“Of course it’s a yes, you goof.” Lena laughed, leaning forward and kissing her again.

Lena was sure of a lot of things. She was sure that Kara looked gorgeous in her bed while the sun was rising, she was sure that the contents of her fridge wouldn’t be enough to make a kryptonian style breakfast, and she was sure that Kara Danvers was definitely and undeniably in love with her too.
