Work Text:

Paper hearts were hung from the ceiling, some with names written in childish scrawl that read 'mommy' and 'daddy' while other hearts had the names of nurses and doctors of the hospital. What the surgeon didn't expect when passing by the nurses station to collect some papers was seeing his name scribbled on a heart decorated with a few bandages used for children.

Varre tilted his head, confused as to why someone would take the time to hang a heart with his name on it. He looked around for other names, noting some other surgeons of the same wing hung up but they were well liked. Varre knew many thought him to be odd with his insistent ramblings of details of the latest surgery around the water cooler as small talk but who thought well enough of him to put up a heart?

Adjusting his face mask, Varre turned away from the nurse's station without his paperwork to hurry to his office and start his work day. He didn't need that paperwork yet and the first and only surgery of the day was soon. After his consultations with clients, Varre would come back. Maybe. Maybe he would just go home directly and spend it alone with his cat.

"D-Doctor? Do you know what day it is?"

Varre still had his finger in the front of his mask, about to pull it down to take a sip of his coffee before a nurse approached him with a question. He noted the slight weary look on her face, the way she seemed unsteady on her feet by switching her weight from side to side and when she asked, her words were almost jumbled. An overworked nurse who truly didn't know the day. Varre pulled his mask down to take a sip of his overly sweet coffee while staring past the rim of his mug at the nurse. He noticed the slightly disheveled appearance of the woman, rumbled scrubs and hair recently pulled from a ponytail with how unkept it looked. He knew if she was in the right mind, she probably wouldn't have approached him in the first place.

"Friday, February 14th. Too many shifts overlapping one another, dear?"

A simple answer yet he still saw a bit of confusion appear on the nurse's face. Blinking up at him, her eyes widened and her cheeks started to flush. It looked as if she realized who she was talking to. Or maybe it wasn't the answer she wanted. Pulling his face mask back up, Varre was about to step away from the coffee machine when the nurse perked up and cleared her throat.

"T-Thank you...doctor."

"Of course, dear."

He noticed how her cheeks darkened at his words but shrugged it off to return to his office before his last consultation of the day. Then he could return home and forget about work for a few days.

Varre checked his phone, staring at the one eyed cat he kept as his background. A fluffy black cat with small white fangs poking out. His beloved Mohg. Varre sighed, ready to head out for the day so he could shower his Mohg with all sorts of treats when he suddenly remembered the paperwork he left at the nurse's station. It made him groan into his face mask, wondering if he could put it off until next week. There wasn't a chance it would slide so he grabbed his things to make the journey across the hospital. Having his own office was a blessing until he had to go pick up paperwork. Why they didn't email everything, Varre didn't know. Just as he was about to turn off the lights, a knock made him stop. He didn't have any more appointments. Poking his head out the door, Varre found the nurse from earlier standing there. She looked slightly better. More aware of her surroundings but still flushed in the face.

"Hello, Doctor Varre! I hope you don't mind but I noticed you hadn't picked up your folder so I brought it for you!"

In her hand was the manilla folder with his name scribbled on a sticky note in the shape of a cat. In the same handwriting on the heart from earlier. His eyes stared at it for a moment before they slid up to catch the nurse's gaze who seemed to realize he was putting the two and two together.

"Oh. Thank you, my dear. You've saved me from a long trek."

The nurse brightened up with a grin, offering the folder with both hands which Varre took. He flipped the folder over to stare at the note with a chuckle to himself. Before he could ask if she knew anything about the heart at the nurse's station, the nurse took one step back only to turn on one foot and hurry away! Varre watched as she practically slid around the corner before looking back down at the folder where he noticed a pink corner slipping out from the top. Tugging it out, Varre was surprised to find a card. All pink and red with a heart drawn in a cartoon style in the middle. Inside, he found a message that made him tilt his head in confusion.

"I aorta tell you how much I like you..." Varre read out loud, looking to see if there was a signature.

There didn't seem to be. Without a name to go with the face, Varre would just put it off until Monday when his work day started. Taking one last look at the card, he put it back into the folder and started to head out of the hospital. A chuckle came from under his mask, realizing something.

"I'm not even a heart surgeon. What a strange little lambkin."
