Work Text:

Katsuki hated sweets. So it was no question that he would inevitably hate Valentines days and everything it stood for. Besides, why would he care about stupid lovey-dovey crap when there were more important things, like being the number one hero?

Preparing to face the horrible day ahead, he tossed his black tank top on, grabbed his running shoes and flew out the door for his morning jog. Passing the kitchen a wave of sweetness smacked him in the face. Scowling in disgust he peeked into the kitchen wondering who in their right mind would be up this early flooding the whole common space with this head aching smell.

There in the kitchen stood the queen of sweets herself, Ochako Uraraka. Of course. There she was standing over a pot, counter a complete mess of what looked like failed confectioneries and various bowls and mixing spoons. “The heck are you doing up so early, Round-Face?” He barked.

Letting out a squeak, Uraraka jumped spinning around, knocking a bowl onto the floor in a clatter. “Good morning, Bakugou.” She said standing in front of the stove as if she was hiding something. Chocolate smeared on her right cheek she offered him an innocent smile.

Staring back with suspicion, Katsuki crossed his arms and leaned against the wall. “Hope you don’t plan on keeping the kitchen like this all morning.”

“Oh! Don’t worry I was just finishing up.” She replied turning back to stir the pot again. “It will be all clean by the time you come back from your run.” She cast him a smile over her shoulder.

Uraraka was a kind person, everyone knew that, but she seemed extra sweet this morning and Katsuki wasn’t sure he liked it. Chalking it up to being because of the obvious holiday and the fact that she was clearly making chocolates, she must be giving some to the nerd. Letting out a small huff he moved away from the wall ignoring the small twist in his stomach at the thought and headed for the front door. “It better be spotless, Cheeks.” He called as he left her to her business.

After his jog he headed for the showers before returning to his room to get ready for Class. On his way through the common area he cast a glance into the kitchen once more. Uraraka wasn’t lying when she said she’d have everything cleaned up by the time he was done with his run. The place looked spotless as if no one had used it yet that morning.

As expected the classroom was abuzz with excited girls handing out chocolates and guys giving flowers. Katsuki’s nose scrunched in disgust rolling his eyes as he passed all the desks. He saw chocolate boxes littered on every desktop except his own. Just the way he liked it. Glancing at Deku’s desk he saw the nerd with the biggest smile and small blush on his cheeks as he examined the chocolate box in his hand. Those had to be the Chocolates Uraraka had made. Good for him. Plopping loudly in his chair he glared out the window bitterly ready for this day to be over.

At lunchtime he was crowded at the table by Kirishima and Kaminari as they gushed over the chocolates they received from Mina and Jirou. Glaring down at his lunch he tried to block them out but of course they just couldn’t leave him alone.

“So Bakubro, you get any chocolates from anyone special.” Kaminari poked his shoulder with a grin, wiggling his eyebrows. “Tsk. I don’t need stupid stuff like that.” Katsuki replied. “Get that crap outta my face.” He shoved Kaminari away. “Ahhh don’t be a spoil sport just cuz we got chocolate and you didn’t. I don’t blame anyone for not wanting to give you any with that attitude.” Kaminari said holding his chocolates in defense pouting his lip.

“Look, I don’t have any need for that stuff. Some of us are here to learn to be heroes not look for a date.” Katsuki growled.

“You’re just grumpy because we’re better at something then you.” Kaminari scoffed back. “Bro.” Kirishima countered trying to calm the situation down as he saw Katsuki’s face go red in anger. Standing Katsuki shouted “I COULD GET A THOUSAND CHOCOLATES IF I WANTED TOO!!”

A hush fell over him as whispers spread around the lunchroom as people stared in shock at the outburst. Suddenly Katsuki felt every eye on him as he looked around the quiet room. Ears going red he ducked his head between his shoulders and stormed out hands in his pockets.

“Dude, that wasn’t cool.” Kirishima reprimanded Kaminari as he watched his friend leave.

Grinding his teeth Katsuki stomped all the way to Gym Gamma to get ready for training long before lunch was over. As the class slowly started to enter the training area he ignored his friends keeping to the corner until Aizawa assigned them partners.

He was up against Ojiro for the duration of class. As the training began his mind was full of what Kaminari said. “I have no need for that crap.” He thought to himself nearly getting hit in the face with Ojiro’s tail. “Focus, idiot.” He reprimanded himself gritting his teeth and sending a right hook “I’m not here to date.” Suddenly Katsuki was on his back as Ojiro’s tail swept his feet out.

“Bakugou, clearly your head isn’t in the game right now, why don’t you sit out for a bit.” Aizawa called over with disapproval. With a huff he got up and went over to the bench for some water a glare set in his face at his own mistake.

Hearing whispers and giggles at the water station next to him he glanced over to see Mina, Jirou and Uraraka in a huddle whispering and glancing in his direction before Mina let out another giggle. Uraraka had her mouth covered trying to hide her smile as she glanced his way for a second. Were they laughing at him? His hand gripped the water bottle tightly as he tried to ignore them when suddenly In his peripheral he saw Mina and Jirou give Uraraka a light push as she headed to where he sat.

“Umm, Bakugou?” She said looking down at her feet as she shuffled side to side hands behind her back. “Would you meet me after School? I need to talk to you.”

Looking over at her he could tell from her posture that she was nervous. Did she do something? Why him? “Sure.” He replied with a shrug.

“Okay, ummm let’s meet back here then at 4.” She said perking up with a bright smile. Nodding his head in acknowledgment he watched as she went to spar with Tsuyu.

What in the world could she possibly want from him? He sat pondering the reasons until he was finally called back for another round of sparing. This time he didn’t let his thoughts distract him.

4 P.M came quickly. Finding himself at gym gamma 15 minutes early he decided to throw some punches while he waited. She better not be late, his time was very important to him and he had homework to study.

The door creaked signaling her arrival. Steadying the punching bag he looked over his shoulder as she came into view. Upon seeing him she paused, taking a deep breath before she continued her walk to him.

“Hey.” She said softly looking at her feet before glancing up shyly at him then darting her gaze away. “Thanks for meeting me.” She rocked slightly on her feet hands behind her back the entire time.

“What’s up, Cheeks?” He replied gruffly eyeing her.

Closing her eyes tightly like she was about to tell the world’s biggest secret, she brought her hands quickly from behind her and held out a heart shaped box of chocolates. “Here! These are for you.” Her voice cracked slightly, cheeks a dark shade of pink as she finally looked at him.

Freezing unsure of what he was experiencing, Katsuki just stood there slack-jawed until realization hit him. She must have heard Sparky teasing him in the lunchroom and felt bad for him. Well he didn’t need or want her pity. Gritting his teeth he shoved the box away from him. “Look, I don’t need your pity chocolates.”

“Pity?” She whispered crestfallen, blush no longer on her face now replaced with hurt in her eyes.

“What? Did Sparky put you up to this or somethin? Go give them to someone else. I don’t need hand outs.” He said with a bite as he looked away not liking the hurt look in her eyes.

Blinking she realized what he was talking about and placed herself in front of him again before he had the chance to walk away. “Bakugou, this isn’t about what happened in the lunchroom. I…I made these for you. Only you.” She said confidently looking at him now with deep brown eyes devoid of the hurt there moments ago. Instead now she was looking at him with tenderness, something he’d only experienced when he was young from his parents.

Glancing back down at the box he recognized it as one of the things piled up on the counter that morning when he found her in the kitchen. So those chocolates she was making this morning weren’t for the nerd but for…him? Eyes growing wide he stared at her for a long moment in silence before gulping and reaching his hand out, brushing her fingers as he took the box. Opening it he was hit immediately with the smell of spice. Chili powder?

“I know how much you like spicy things so I made spicy dark chocolate. I wasn’t able to try them because I can’t handle spice very well.” She chuckled scratching the back of her head.

They weren’t perfect but they were his. Taking a chocolate out of the box he popped it slowing into his mouth, spice hitting his tongue with a slight bitterness. For sweet things this wasn’t terrible, in fact he liked it a lot.

“How are they?” She asked looking up at him through her lashes. Swallowing he looked away tips of his ears pink. He never thought he’d get chocolates from someone, let alone Uraraka and he didn’t know he’d actually care. But now standing here he found he cared a lot. “ they’re good.” He replied clearing his throat.

“Oh! I’m so glad!” She cheered with the big smile on her face.

As they started to head back for the dorms Katsuki popped another chocolate in his mouth.

“There’s one more thing I wanted to say.” She said glancing at him again as she walked beside him. “I like you, Baukgou.”

Suddenly he was in a fit of coughs as the spices from the chocolate hit his throat. Cheeks and ears completely red as he comprehend her words.

Katsuki still didn’t care for Valentine’s Day and still didn’t like sweet things but for Uraraka, he supposed he could make an exception.
