Chapter 1: General Headcanons (feat. Freya)

Chapter Text

  • He is far too generous for his own good. We know he gave Ingrid to Odin in disguise because he thought he was in love. In the game we see him give Skiðblaðnir to Kratos for saving him. I think that he gave Gullinbursti (his golden boar) away too, which is why we don't see it in the game. I think he probably gave it to the elves as a sign of good faith or something similar. (Writing a fic about him getting Gullinbursti back from Alfheim.)
  • Freyr and Freya are twins, but Freya was born first, so pulls rank as older sibling. This is why Freya is queen too. When they were children, despite being the same age, more pressure and responsibility was put on Freya’s shoulders, because she was the heir and Freyr was the spare. This is why we see the difference in their perspectives on responsibility. For Freya it is more serious, for Freyr it is more lax.
  • Freyr still has the occasional nightmare about being burnt at the hands of the Aesir. He will wake up in the middle of the night, feeling phantom flames licking at his skin and burning him. He sweats and his scars will start to itch afresh. When he gets these nightmares, he will take himself away from everyone and find a body of water or a river, just to sit in it, sometimes even forgetting to take his clothes off. The sensation of the cool water drives away the feeling of flames and soothes his scars. He stays in the water until he has calmed down or until his fingers have turned white from the cold water.
  • While Freyr and Freya are twins, their magical abilities are different. Freya’s magic is much more concentrated and something she has to put conscious effort into controlling. Freyr on the other hand, his magic is more subconscious, with abilities he tends to use without noticing. Freya’s magic is therefore much more suited for spell casting as she can concentrate on them and push her energy into. Freyr however has an inherently closer connection to nature and tends to use his magical abilities that way. For example, he can connect to the nature around him, the plants and animals, and use them to track people or things in the jungles of his home. This is how he was able to evade capture from the Aesir for so long, as well as having good intel on the invading Einherjar and keeping his squad safe.
  • While Freya’s preferred magic animal form is the falcon, Freyr’s chosen form is a boar. Freyr has strong connections to the boar; we see this with the boar tusk crest he wears and his golden boar, Gullinbursti. I think this is to do with Hildisvini helping raise him and Freya when they were younger.
