Work Text:
Izuku and Katsuki got closer over the course of the last school year. And Izuku felt like his feelings would finally be reciprocated. So, a few weeks before Valentine’s he had gathered his courage and had asked Kacchan for a few dates. But every time they met, Kirishima tagged along.
The first time it happened he hadn’t thought much about it. They were having a study date in the common room. It was a little bit awkward between just the two of them. Kacchan only spoke when talked to and was giving only short answers. Half an hour into their date, Kirishima asked if he could join them since he needed help with his studies, too. Neither had any objections, so the three of them studied the whole afternoon and the awkwardness evaporated quickly.
The next time Izuku invited Kacchan to go shopping in the nearby shopping district. He waited at the school gates when Kacchan showed up with Kirishima in tow saying the redhead wanted to buy a birthday gift for his mother. Izuku was a little miffed, but he didn’t say anything. Maybe Kirishima had asked Kacchan when he was getting ready for their date, what he was up to and Kacchan didn’t explicitly tell him they had a date. Izuku wouldn’t be surprised. At least they had a fun afternoon.
The third time it happened Izuku wanted to visit the new exhibition at the hero museum. Kacchan and Kirishima showed up at the museum together and Izuku was not happy about it. It got even worse. Kacchan and Kirishima went ahead inside the exhibition not waiting for Izuku who read and studied all the show cases on the early beginnings on heroism. He spent the afternoon mostly alone. Afterwards Kirishima suggested to get something to eat. Izuku was snippy and left them alone.
The last straw was the movie date. Izuku invited Kacchan to watch the new hero movie at the local cinema. Izuku was a bit early and decided to buy the two tickets . While waiting he saw Kacchan and Kirishima approaching. His anger rose and he gritted his teeth. Why the hell was Kirishima always around? Didn’t Kacchan want to be alone with him? Didn’t he realize they were on a date? He thought his childhood friend felt the same as him. He heard Kacchan laugh loudly at something Kirishima said. When was the last time Kacchan laughed heartily at something Izuku said to him? Did he completely misunderstand their building relationship? But Kacchan was always looking at him . Always getting a little flustered when they got physically close during a training session.
“Hey nerd!”, Kacchan greeted him when they got close. Izuku was seething. “Shitty Hair wanted to see the movie, too.”
“Of course, he does.” Izuku mumbled. He gripped the two movie tickets and shoved them into Kacchan’s chest who needed to take a step back to break the thrust.
“Here, your tickets. Something came up. Enjoy.” Izuku griped, turned around and stomped back to UA ignoring Kacchan’s shouting. He got back to his dorm room and crawled into bed hiding from the world. Not crying, definitely not crying.
The next morning, he sat with Kacchan, Kirishima and some other classmates in the dorm kitchen for breakfast. The two talked about the movie and how awful it was.
“Good.” Izuku said spiteful and loud enough for Kacchan to hear. At least they hadn’t a good time! Before anyone could say more, Izuku was finished with his breakfast and left them alone in the dorm kitchen.
He avoided Kacchan the next two weeks. He was still angry Kacchan kept Kirishima around for their dates. Don’t get him wrong, Kirishima was his friend and they got along pretty well, but he loathed he crashed his dates with Kacchan. He was still heartbroken, his childhood friend apparently felt different about him.

Katsuki tried talking to Izuku but couldn’t get a hold of him. Why the fuck was the nerd avoiding him? And why was he so angry, when they met up for their movie date? Izuku didn’t even asked him out anymore. Was he not interested anymore? Izuku’s eyes were always so expressive and he always looked at him with those sparkles in his eyes he didn’t show anyone else. God, he had it bad.
One day, a few weeks after the disastrous movie date, he saw Izuku getting ready to go outside. Purple Hair was with him. They chatted animatedly.
“Shinsou-kun, hurry up, we’re going to be late!” The nerd rushed his classmate.
“Where’re you going?” Katsuki asked before Purple Hair could say anything.
Izuku looked around and stayed quiet for a few moments. “I invited Shinsou-kun to watch the new hero movie.”
Katsuki stared at him. “The one we wanted to watch?”
“Yes.” Izuku said while holding Purple Hair’s jacket up for him to slip in.
“What the fuck?! We wanted to watch that together!” Katsuki yelled. What the fuck was happening? Why would the nerd invited Purple Hair and not him? He glared at his classmate and really fighting with himself to not rip into him.
“You already saw the movie. And said how bad it was.”
“I wouldn’t mind watching it with you.” Katsuki mumbled feeling his ears heating up.
“But I’m sure, Kirishima-kun doesn’t want to watch it again.” With that he and Purple Hair were out the door before Katsuki could respond.
Katsuki was seething. How could the nerd go watch the hero movie without him? He was sure the movie wouldn’t be that bad if he watched it with Izuku. He could always see the good in everything. It’s what he lo- liked about him.
He positioned himself on the couch nearest the entrance door of the dorm waiting for Izuku to come home. He didn’t wait like a good dog for his owner to come home, no Sir. Katsuki fucking Bakugou doesn’t wait for no one. He just needed to talk to the nerd to get behind his recent abrasive behavior.
Katsuki jumped up, when he heard a commotion at the door a few hours later and saw Izuku and Purple Hair coming back from their outing – giggling. Giggling! What the fuck!
He observed him for a few minutes. Izuku looked lighthearted and cheerful. God, he really missed that expression on his face. The last few weeks he looked sad and angry, whenever Katsuki caught a glimpse of him.
The nerd stopped abruptly when Katsuki approached them. His face losing his easygoing expression.
“Nerd, we need to talk.” Katsuki steeled himself. He wanted to resolve the uncomfortable tension between them today.
“I don’t have anything to talk about.” Izuku put his shoes away and stomped by Katsuki to the elevators.
“Shit!” Katsuki mumbled and hurried after his childhood friend. Only hearing a „Good luck!“ from Purple Hair. “Wait!”
Instead of waiting for the elevators Izuku took the stairs up to his room. He caught up to him before Izuku reached his room. Katsuki grabbed his arm.
“Please, Izuku.” Katsuki said. He didn’t plead. Katsuki fucking Bakugou doesn’t plead! Okay, yeah, he pleaded but that was only because he needed the nerd do talk to him.
Izuku stopped and stared at him for a few quiet moments before he sighed. “Fine.” He gritted out and folded his arms. “Talk!”
Katsuki took a deep breath. “Why are you fucking avoiding me? I thought we were getting… better. Why did you ask Purple Hair for a date instead of me?” His voice was getting more and more hushed with every word. He felt embarrassed and his ears were definitely not red.
“So, you realized I asked you out on a date.” Izuku said still mad.
“Of course.” Katsuki answered.
“I wasn’t sure with Kirishima-kun always tagging along… You seemed to have more fun with him than with me.” His childhood friend sounded sad and heartbroken. He could see the tears forming in his expressive eyes. “I thought I misinterpreted everything…”
“Shit! No!” Katsuki panicked. God, he was so stupid! Of course! Why didn’t he think of that? He would have been seething if Glasses or Half’n Half accompanied their dates. “No! You didn’t! I was really happy!”
He realized what a big mistake he made. He was so stupid! Why didn’t he realize sooner?
“Then why was Kirishima-kun always there?”
Katsuki knew he was red as a tomate by now. It was so embarrassing, but he needed to clear up the misunderstanding, to make his nerd understand. So, he ventured on.
“I… panicked. I was nervous talking to you… Shitty Hair suggested to tag along so it wouldn’t be so awkward.” He thought back on their first study date, when he couldn’t say more than a few words to Izuku. He was so fucking nervous. The awkwardness only got dissolved when Shitty Hair started studying with then.
“Why would you be nervous? We talked normally before?” Izuku sounded confused and Katsuki couldn’t blame him. He was really bad at dealing with feelings and shit.
“Because I always yelled at you! And I didn’t want to anymore. Because I like you! Like a lot! And you deserve better!”
Katsuki only realized what he had said, when Izuku’s green eyes got bigger and bigger and his smile got wider and wider. No more confusion on his face, no more sadness. Only pure happiness. God, he was whipped.
„Kacchan...“ Izuku said softly with so much love and admiration in his voice, Katsuki got weak knees. „That is really sweet of you, but you don’t have to change yourself for me. I like you the way you are.“
„But I want to change for you. I want to be better for you.“ Katsuki said looking anywhere but at those big green eyes. It was a little overwhelming. He wasn’t good with feelings and shit.
The nerd grabbed the lapel of Katsuki’s uniform jacket and pulled him closer towards himself, their noses almost touching. His eyes scrunched and he more or less glared at him. Katsuki gulped. Fuck! Was he hot! This look did things to him he didn’t fully understand.
“Alright, you get one last chance. One last date. No Kirishima-kun, no nobody. Just you and me. Next week there’s a -”
Katsuki put a finger on Izukus mouth to shut him up. “No. It’s my turn to plan something. Valentine’s day is tomorrow, so be prepared to be whooed.”
“Okay.” Izuku pecked his nose. “You have to make up for those shitty dates after all. So, I’m expecting the world best date. If you’re doing good, you’ll get a proper one.” He grinned predatorily.
Katsuki gulped again and only nodded unable to say anything. He was feeling hot and did the air got thinner? Why was he getting so turned on by just his expressive face. God, he had it bad.
Almost as an afterthought he grumbled: “Why fucking Purple Hair?”
Izuku laughed. He laughed! The audacity! “Don’t worry. He suggested we could help each other out. His advances towards Kaminari didn’t seem to go as planned. So he thought, we could kill to birds with one stone, making you both jealous. I’d say it was a brilliant plan”
„I wasn’t jealous!“ Katsuki yelled outraged. There is no way he would ever be jealous!
The nerd giggled. „Of course not, Kacchan.“

Katsuki brought Izuku to his dorm room after their amazing (in his humble opinion) date the next day. He wanted to say Good night and hoping for a good verdict from Izuku. His childhood friend and soon-to-be boyfriend (hopefully) opened the door to his room and hesitated a few moments. Then he grabbed Katsuki’s shirt and pulled him inside his room. They spend the whole night together kissing and maybe doing other things as well.
Izuku and Kirishima apologized to each other for taking out his anger on him and for crashing their dates. And if Shinsou and Kaminari had spent a nice Valentine’s Day together, too, then that is another story to tell.
