Work Text:
Remus looks at his calendar. Today is Valentine’s Day. Another year where he is alone on this day. Not that he complains about, he is used to being alone. He has been alone for decades. After his relationship with Tonks crashed and burned because he didn’t want to get married and have children, he left. He hasn’t talked to her since, and that was eight years ago. He hasn’t seen many people since then. Harry visits him occasionally, sometimes he brings his children, and once in a blue moon, Severus comes with his husband. He snorts, if you had told him back in his youth that one day Severus would be married to James’ son, he would have called them mad.
He shakes his head and goes on about his day. He is working when there is a knock on his door. He opens it and is surprised to see Draco Malfoy. “What are you doing here?”
Draco looks at the man who has been haunting his dreams for years. He swallows, “I ehm, can I come in?”
Remus lets him. They go into the kitchen, and Remus makes them some tea.
Draco sips his tea. He looks at the man next to him.
Remus looks pale; his scars are more prominent. Remus looks at Draco, “So why are you here?” Draco and his mother changed sides during the war.
Draco paid for it by losing his leg. Harry told him he is wearing a prosthetic leg. Their encounters were few but friendly every time. Draco takes a deep breath, “I am here to ask you to join me for dinner tonight.”
Remus coughs, “What?”
Draco plays with his cup, “The truth is, I’ve had a crush on you for years, and well, it never went away, and I am tired of being unhappy. Every relationship I had failed because they were with me because they wanted my money, and I never loved any of them.” He stares into Remus’ eyes, “The truth is, I want you, and only you and I decided to finally tell you and stop wasting my time.” He takes his hand, “I believe we can be happy. That is, if you want to date me.”
Remus removes his hand, “No. I think you should go.”
Draco’s face falls, “No. Just like that?”
Remus nods, “Yes, just like that. Leave.”
Draco gets up, moves towards the door, opens it and turns around. He rummages through his pockets. He finds a notepad and a pen, and he writes down his address. He puts it on the small table, “If you change your mind.”
Draco apparates into his loft, he goes into the study and pours himself a drink and another. He throws the bottle to the ground and starts to cry. He is glad he didn’t tell Remus that he is in love with him, has been for years. But still being dismissed like that hurt. He hears his floo, he cleans himself up and gets rid of the glass and spilt whiskey. He makes his way into his living room, and he will get rid of whoever just entered his home.
-
Remus looks at Draco’s address. He rips the paper up and goes back to his work. He tries to put the encounter out of his mind, but his mind flashes back to the hurt look in Draco’s eyes. Remus shakes his head. Nothing good will come out of dating. He is better off alone. He is a werewolf; he can make no one happy.

Draco is cooking dinner, and he is so lost in thoughts he jumps when he can feel two arms around him. He turns around, “You scared me.”
Remus chuckles, “I called you a few times. What had you so occupied?”
Draco leans his head against Remus’ chest, “Our son is on his first date tonight. Before we know it, he will be married with kids.”
Remus kisses his cheek, “He’s only 14. We have time before he gets married and we have grandkids.” Draco nods and turns back around to finish their dinner.
They sit down and enjoy their meal. This is the same meal they shared 17 years ago when Remus showed up and took a chance on them. Remus is glad he listened to Severus all those years ago. Being with Draco changed his life, and Draco was right, they are happy together. He looks at his husband and smiles.
