With someone as effusive as that man was, you’d expect Ren Zotto to have a marriage proposal that was grandiose and extraordinary, surrounded by friends, family, and probably a whole band playing; and yet, the scene before Kyo couldn’t be more domestic instead. Just the two of them in their apartment on a Sunday afternoon, both of them on their couch after dinner, the movie they were watching paused, and the bigger man struggling to breathe correctly as he took Kyo’s hands between his.
"Kyo, I want you to marry me"
Ren gazed directly into his boyfriend’s eyes, the grip of his hands tightening despite trembling, his own heart beating so so fast. Kyo's eyes were wide open, not looking back at him but fixated on the floor instead. The blue-haired boy’s mouth opened and closed but no sounds came out of it. Ren's anxiety increased, his heart feeling trapped in thorns as he prepared himself for the worst. Still, he waited patiently before speaking again. He knew how risky it would be to even start this conversation, and yet he refused to take a step back.
"Why?" Resonated in the room. Their eyes finally meeting, the younger man looks at him in disbelief. "Me?"
The alien chuckles, exhaling out of his nose. “Who else?” He smiles tiredly, eyes as adoring as always observing Kyo’s movements attentively, smaller hands let go of his and find their place in their owner’s head. Anxiety grows again in Ren’s stomach as he hears him sigh. “We can always wait a few years, I didn’t mean to scare you with this but this is how I feel”
“No, no, that’s alright but fuck, Ren you’re insane, do you even have the money for a wedding? Do we?” The black-haired man frowns, smile fading away and being replaced with a concerned expression.
“Are you… not happy with this?”
Kyo lays down on the couch, eyes closed as his hands covered his face. “It’s not that, it’s just-” he takes a long pause, the realization of what was happening hitting him finally. “Let me think about this first, ok?” He knew this was nerve-wracking for Ren, but it was for him too, and he couldn’t just answer without thinking, that’s not what either of them deserved to have. “Just 24 hours, that’s all I ask from you. Listen I know it’s mean, but I swear to God that’s all I need, ok?”
After that, the conversation was over. Ren had understood him and even in such a situation, he was as patient as ever. Kyo was thankful for that attitude, he always was even if he didn’t say it out loud, he knew his boyfriend knew that too, but he would never take him for granted and so, as he perceived the sadness coming from the taller man’s eyes, he had kissed him. Lovingly, deep, and a bit short, those rare kisses that were initiated by him instead of Ren. With their faces just inches away he had asked the alien if he could think about the next hours as just another normal day between them, and even if his chest was aching with doubts and a hint of regret, he had answered positively. It was for him, he’d do anything. Waiting a whole day wasn’t easy on his mind but he’d make an effort. Maybe the way he was doing things was too sudden, but he had already set his mind on this pretty much the very first day the two of them had met.
The afternoon passes and the night comes, despite what had just happened, none of them feel uncomfortable with each other. Whenever they’d have an argument, they were capable of keeping on talking and today was no different. If the house was a bit more silent, Ren knew it was because Kyo was deep in thought. They had given each other some space, Ren had gone to his study to practice bass, and Kyo decided to play some League matches. Once it was late in the night, Ren appeared with a plate of chocolate croissants, kissed his forehead, and left the room right away.
“I’ll be going to sleep baby, good night” He offered a soft smile before disappearing. The younger boy wished him good night as his gaze lingered on the door for a while before grabbing the pastries and eating them. He’d play one more game before heading to bed too.
When morning came, the blue-haired boy woke up slowly, the faint smell of breakfast in the air letting him know that Ren had gotten up already. Today none of them had to work, so they could spend the day doing whatever. He heard the bedroom door opening. With half-open eyes, he followed the figure of his boyfriend walking towards the bed and checking on him. “Hey there, wanna have breakfast in bed with me?” he says, hand reaching his cheeks and caressing them lovingly. Kyo nuzzles into the warmth exhaling an affirmative “uhh-hmm.” The taller man lowers himself to place a quick peck on the boy’s lips and walks away to bring everything to the bedroom. “You can always go back to sleep after this if you’re too tired” the voice echoed in the hallway, he stretched before propping himself up. His hands reached for the TV remote, wanting to have something in the background as they eat. He’d definitely sleep a bit more after this.
The hours go by, and as they had no plans besides making dinner, they spend the day lazing around together. Ren would occasionally show him a funny video and Kyo would laugh at them. The atmosphere between them remained the same as always. They talk as always and hold each other as always, a cozy feeling of belonging engulfs Kyo’s guts and Ren couldn’t be happier to finally have some alone time with him. As it’s getting later, both of them decide it’s time to prepare dinner. Ren heads to the kitchen and Kyo thinks about what to watch while eating (of course he’ll help out too)
And once that’s done, they are back to the scene from 24 hours ago. The same couch, same lighting, and same empty dishes were being carried back to the kitchen by Ren. Two minutes passed before Kyo got up and appeared there, standing by the doorframe. The water was running as his boyfriend was finishing cleaning. “What’s wrong?” he asks as he looks back at the younger boy.
“I’m gonna say this just once, ok? I think, if I were to spend every day like this with you, just like we’ve been doing till now, I wouldn’t mind that” The awaited answer, just in Kyo’s style. Straightforward, down-to-earth, sincere to the bone, and unexpectedly sweet. “I’m sorry if yesterday I worried you not responding right away but, shit, man… this is not something I was expecting anyone to ever say to me. Like yeah, we’ve been together for years but are you sure? Me? For the rest of your life? Don’t fucking smile at me like that! Wait, wait, wait- are you crying?”
Ren pulls himself away from the sink, he barely gets to dry his hands as quickly as he can when he’s throwing himself at Kyo in a hug.
“God I… There are many things that we can figure out as we go, baby. Honestly, I’m really scared, and I was super scared when we first talked about it but I’m still sure about this. Whatever our lifespans are, I still want those years to belong to you and no one else.” He could feel the smaller boy’s face burying itself in his chest. “You might think you’re nothing special or that ‘you’re a piece of shit’ but to me, you’ve always been the person I want to see first in the morning and the last one I see before going to bed.” He pets Kyo’s hair, he can feel the wetness of a few tears through his shirt and the slight shaking of the arms that embraced him back. He planted a kiss on the boy’s crown, swaying both of their weights lightly from side to side almost as if he was rocking a baby to sleep. “I love you”
In between tiny sniffling noises, he hears a small “love you too”
