Work Text:
One holiday that Lena hated was Valentine's Day. Other holidays that traditionally involved family sucked of course, but Valentine's Day was one holiday that she had actually participated in over the years. She was usually seeing somebody over the holiday, and if she wasn't then it was a perfect day to go out with someone new. But the last few years had been hard after breaking up with James, the fallout with Kara, and building back her relationship with the Super. Kara got back from the phantom zone in August of 2021 and they were working on their friendship until the summer of 2022.
Then one night William had decided to piss her off. For some reason he thought that because he'd gone on one date with Kara a year ago, that she'd be down for more. They were all at the bar to relax, even Kara was a little tipsy, when William put his arm around her shoulders. It was clear to almost everyone (except Willy boy) that she was uncomfortable. And of course Lena could not have that happening to her best friend (love of her life). She'd reached over and slid her hand across Kara's thigh, much higher than a friend would ever dare. Kara had blushed a bright red as Lena asked her to dance. Then she'd staked her claim with her arms around her neck and Kara's hands low on her hips. From the next morning on they'd been a couple.
Today marked her first Valentine's Day with Kara. Of course it had to be special, Kara deserved the world. But the normal flowers and chocolates wouldn't do, she had to do something more. Knowing Kara, she'd done something super extravagant for Lena. Which is how Lena found herself wrapping a crystal block that she'd had someone laser a picture of the two of them into. It was one of her favorites of Kara holding her bridal style in pajamas in front of the Christmas tree. She'd selected two cards, one sentimental and one funny. She signed a winky face (Kara had taught her that one) in the funny card with a chuckle. 'I love you with all of my boobs. I would say heart, but my boobs are much bigger'.
She moved onto the other one that had two check boxes on the front reading ‘girl’ and ‘best’, off to the side it said ‘friend’. Underneath it said ‘Thanks for being both to me’.
Inside she decided to pour her heart out.
My love,
Today is a day I truly never thought I would have with you. There aren’t words to express how much you mean to me. But I guess a simple, I love you, will have to do for now. I would be lost without you. It’s cliche but true. You are my guiding light when I can’t find my way. My beacon of hope in a world that is so broken. I love you with every ounce of my soul, every breath I take, and I will love you long after I’m gone. Happy Valentine’s Day my love.
She signed it and put it into the bag just as boots touched down on her balcony. Kara strode into her office with two coffee cups and a bouquet of flowers. "Sorry I wasn't there when you woke up this morning. There was a fire at the docks. You'd think they could at least have waited until tomorrow. It's like nobody thinks Supergirl would like to at least wake up with cuddles." Kara bent down and Lena wasted no time in pressing a kiss to her lips.
"It's ok love, I understand. I do agree though, I would have loved cuddles with you this morning. But we can make up for it later. I told Jess not to come in until ten tomorrow so we can spend the morning together too.”
Kara put the coffee down on her desk and straddled her lap in her chair. Her hands fell to blue spandex covered thighs as fingers moved to play with her hair. “How was I ever just your best friend?” Their foreheads rested against each other as Lena chuckled.
“Because you were oblivious and naive.”
Kara rolled her eyes, “Well yes I know the obvious. I just meant that I didn’t realize how much better things could be as your girlfriend.”
Lena pretended to be offended, “You mean to tell me that you didn’t enjoy our cuddling movie nights?”
“Of course I did babe. I just happen to prefer sleepy morning cuddles where we end up naked.”
Lena laughed and slid her arms around to rest on Kara’s lower back, “I do have to agree with you. I love waking up and getting naked with you. You are the best part of my day.”
Kara leaned forward and kissed her again, her fingers moving to mess up the tight pony tail she’d put in that morning (not that she really cared). She pulled Kara closer to her as teeth tugged on her bottom lip. She whined and shifted in her chair slightly. Kara ground down on her lap in a way that signaled she’d be more than happy to lock the door and fool around. Unfortunately that was when the door opened and Jess came striding in.
Without missing a beat she dropped files on Lena’s desk, “Supergirl, we have a front door despite what you think. We do have a schedule that we keep here. Miss Luthor is all yours at 5pm, until then do you think you can dismount her so she can get ready for her meeting in fifteen minutes?”
Kara blushed and rolled her eyes while Lena laughed under her, “Fineeee Jess. Since you asked so nicely. I will dismount my girlfriend. I’m holding you to that 5pm deadline. Her phone is being turned off at 5:01.”
Jess laughed, actually laughed, “You’ve got my word. Hop off please, we have a business to run.”
Lena laughed as Kara climbed off of her very ungracefully. “Sorry darling, Jess is the real boss around here.”
Kara fake scoffed, “And here I thought I was dating the one in charge. Guess I should have brought Jess some flowers too. The coffees are for the two of you though. I should probably head out anyway. The news doesn’t write itself. Bye babe, I'll see you later.” Kara leaned down and pressed a kiss to her lips.
“Bye darling. Be careful, no hitting any billboards on your way home. I love you.”
“You hit a billboard one time and nobody lets you forget it. I swear. Don’t work too hard. I’ll be back at 5:00 on the dot. I love you more.”
With a few steps she was out the balcony and soaring into the sky. Lena looked back to see an eyebrow raised at her. “Do you need a minute before we prepare for the meeting, Miss Luthor?”
Lena laughed, “No Jess I’m good. I’m not any more flustered than usual.”
Jess plopped down into the seat across from her, “Nothing can be worse than 2022. I swear to god I just wanted you two to have sex so the tension would disappear. I could practically cut it with a knife.”
“I’m sorry you had to witness it.”
“That’s what you pay me for, amongst other things. Now I put the meeting notes on the top of the file along with the proposal you asked for. The call starts in 10 minutes and the link is in your email. If you need anything just page me and I’ll create a fake emergency to save you.”
Lena thumbed through the file, “My hero. I don’t pay you enough.”
“Don’t let Kara hear you calling me that, she might throw me into the sun.”
Lena chuckled, “She wouldn’t dare. I need you as much as I need her. Without you, she doesn’t get to see me as many hours of the day.”
“That’s actually true. I’ll be outside if you need me.”
“Thank you Jess.”
The door shut quietly behind her. A small blue envelope caught her eye between the folders. In loopy script on the front was her name, definitely from Kara. She opened it and laughed at the card. ‘Happy Alentines day, I’ll give you the V later”. She shook her head, of course Kara would get her a funny card.
~~~~~~
Kara texted at 4:45pm apologizing profusely about a super emergency and that she’d meet her at home. She was a little bummed at not getting to go home in Kara’s arms but there was still the promise of cuddles and dinner. Of course she understood that things came up, it was just the nature of dating a Superhero. Deciding that she should utilize the time she had, she finished up her notes on the meetings for the day and sent off a few emails. An hour later she gathered up the present for Kara and all her bags to take home. A quick call to her driver and she was headed across town to her penthouse. She noticed an envelope sticking out between the seats, this time it was red. Again, her name was written in the same loopy script on the front. The card had a pair of panties on a clothesline across the front. ‘You put a smile on my face, and trigger a tsunami in my panties, but that’s not the point…’ Lena blushed and laughed out loud at the card. Inside she’d written ‘I’ve ruined so many pairs of panties by this point. You should see the inside of my supersuit when you’re on comms…’ Along with the card was a Valentine’s day scratch off card. Her eyebrow lifted as she read on. ‘Scratch off for your date night position’.
With a quick decision she scratched off one of the hearts to reveal ‘morning sex’. Definitely one of the few things they didn’t get to actively partake in because work was a massive cock block. Kara could sometimes be persuaded to turn off her comms for an hour or two in the morning if she wasn’t going into the office until later.
The drive went by quickly and soon she was stepping over the threshold of her apartment. Hope automatically turned on lights in each room when she entered the building so she wasn’t coming into a dark apartment. Lena kicked off her shoes, set down her bags, and crossed into the kitchen. There was food in the oven being kept warm from their favorite local Italian restaurant. A quick check of her phone showed that Kara was headed home. She plated up their food just as Kara landed on the balcony. “Did you just get home?”
Lena hummed, “Yea I finished up some other work so I don’t have to rush tomorrow. I want to enjoy the morning with you.”
Kara deactivated her suit as she made her way over to encircle her waist and rest a head on Lena’s shoulder. “Oh yea? Big plans for us?”
“Mhm. You should check the scratch off card for our plans.”
“Oh yea? What’d you get?”
Lena turned in her arms, her own arms moving up to wrap around Kara’s neck. “Morning sex.”
Kara bit her lip, “Yea? Tomorrow? No interruptions?”
Her fingers slid into blonde curls and scratched just light enough to cause Kara’s eyes to flutter shut. “No interruptions. Just you and I. Slow and sweet because we never have the luxury of it.”
“Mmm, almost wanna skip dinner and get to the presents.”
Lena laughed, “Oh yea? You have more presents than the two cards you left me today? By the way, you are such a dork.”
Kara’s eyes opened as she cracked a smile, “I bet you loved them. Don’t lie to me. They were funny!”
“I’ll give you that. They were funny and cute. You must have done a self checkout because there is no way you handed those to someone with a straight face.”
“Actually, I’ll have you know that I did not use a self checkout. I was even in my supersuit when I bought them.”
All Lena could do was laugh. “I did get you a present and two cards. One funny, one serious. Do you want to do presents first?”
Kara contemplated for a second, “Is the present going to stop us from eating dinner? Because I skipped lunch and I’m starving.”
“My present to you is not going to inherently cause a tsunami in your panties, don’t worry.”
“You underestimate how much you turn me on. But ok, I'll mostly trust you on this one. Let’s do presents first. Then we can eat dinner and have sex later.”
Kara sat down at the breakfast bar when Lena slid the bag over to her. She pulled out the first card and opened it. Her head fell back in a laugh, “Your boobs are not bigger than your heart, but I see what you did there. Very cute babe.” She moved onto the second card and Lena felt her heart speeding up just slightly. It was still nerve wracking to bear her soul to someone, even though Kara was who she felt safest with. Kara sniffled when she closed the card and reached for her. Lena stepped into her arms happily while pressing a kiss to her lips. “I love you so much.”
“I love you more, darling.”
“Not possible.” They stood just holding each other for a few seconds before Lena pushed the bag towards her. Kara relinquished one arm to pull the crystal out of the bag. “Lena, it’s beautiful.”
“You mentioned wanting more pictures of us and that one is my favorite. I thought it was a neat idea instead of just having a regular picture framed.”
“I love it. It’s perfect. Just like you.”
“I think you’re being a little dramatic. I am nowhere near perfect.”
Kara set the crystal down and wrapped her arms back around Lena. “You are perfect to me. I love you so much. Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, love. I also replaced your snacks and chocolate but I didn’t think I needed to wrap it up for you.”
“Best girlfriend ever. Keep playing your cards right and I’ll promote you to wife.”
“Oh yea?”
“Mhm. Direct upgrade from girlfriend to wife. Time to open your gift.”
Lena kissed her cheek, “You drive a hard bargain. Let’s see it.”
Kara swapped spots with her and lifted her up onto the barstool. She zipped down the hall and back in seconds. She appeared with a bear in one hand and an envelope in the other. “This one isn’t a funny card. It’s sappy.”
Lena took the envelope carefully. She pulled the card out to see a picture of them on the front.
Lena,
I never thought I would find a love like ours. I thought I was destined to be alone forever on this floating rock. Since I landed on earth years ago, all I dreamed of was finding someone that loved me for me. Someone that loved me despite all my weird little alien quirks and dorkiness. You have flipped my world entirely upside down since the moment I walked into your office. I was a goner the second I saw those green eyes. And I hope you know that I love every single part of you. Happy Valentine’s Day baby. I love you.
Lena sniffled as she closed the card. “I am so in love with you.” Kara leaned forward to connect their lips gently. She reached up to cup the back of Kara’s neck as the bear was pressed into her free hand. Lena looked down at the bear holding a heart that said ‘I’m SUPER in love with you’ and it had a little cape hanging around its neck. Lena laughed, “You’re such a dork that it’s adorable.”
Kara beamed, “Your dork.”
“All mine.”
