Work Text:
Just like the flowers during spring, Fugo’s affections for the blond man blossomed. They would meet each other after Fugo’s work, Giorno dragging the other to new places. Hidden gardens, small libraries and silent museums were all destinies Giorno often seemed to find. All of them with a spell of magic that made every moment theirs.
Fugo seemed intoxicated with the presence of his lover. In the garden Giorno was the flowers, in the libraries, the hero and in the museums, the piece of art. Fugo wanted so bad to let go of the illusions he held for the stealer, trying to pull himself back to reality out of the fairy tale Giorno had been writing for him for months, still unfamiliar to love. A little scared but at the end resigned to his lover’s magnetism.
Every of his word was a mix of fascinating, smart, snarky, and incredibly charming. His smile seemed to shine through Fugo’s soul as the moonlight does during a long night. His touch was gentle and warm. All of his movements were delicate and deliberate, made to pull Fugo in and keep him inside of the bubble that wouldn’t even burst with the constant teasing of his friends.
Fugo couldn’t find himself defending himself. Surrendering himself to the dear and bubbly feelings that made him feel elated. Floating in a cloud of amazement next of the blond man that had stolen his heart since the start.
Nothing and no one stopped Fugo from falling right where Giorno wanted him, in his arm and all over the moon. Everything seemed to flow as if the universe itself had been working to make his love grow and flourish.
And just as soon as it arrived, it seemed to soon leave.
Giorno spent 6 weeks not only in Fugo’s mind but in his world, and then banished.
The last time they saw each other, Fugo swore Giorno must have been a fairy with the most alluring laugh. They had walked by a lake and stopped to see the ducks that rested nearby. He didn’t even had the chance to deny Giorno’s suggestion to get closer after his precious blue eyes had laid themselves on him. Giorno was more than asking for Fugo’s agreement, he was bewitching the poor fool that was his lover.
The moment sweet moment quickly turned chaotic, since getting too close to a duck mom had seemed at the end to be an unbelievably bad idea. Ending with Fugo running to escape from the angry mother’s attack and Giorno falling to his side to freely laugh, letting his amusement flow out of his body at Fugo’s own misfortune.
Not that Fugo had thought it really was misadventure. Not since earning Giorno’s delightful laugh had been more of a fortune than what he had stored on his bank account.
They had left the lake, opting to buy some dessert and share lovely glances. Their hearts getting in sync as they kissed goodbye. Giorno still blushing a gorgeous pink like in the first day they met. That was Fugo’s favorite color on him.
Giorno had whispered “See you tomorrow.” into Fugo’s lips and then left with his promise in hand.
Fugo waited and called and waited and ran and cried and cried and cried when no one answered the phone. When Giorno never came back.
It had passed 2 months by then. Fugo had decided to move out of his apartment to another, seeming to find Giorno’s ghost in every inch of it. Every whispering wind that seemed to come through the windows, making Fugo wake up in a jolt, thinking it might had been Giorno’s sweet voice.
He pretended as much as he could. Smiles feeling too heavy on his mouth and his eyes weighting him down as soon as he got home.
He sold every bit he had shared with Giorno, trying to get out of the haunting experience that was missing his lover.
He wondered for days and nights if something had happened to him. He searched for records in hospitals, police stations, prisons, everywhere he could think of before accepting that maybe Giorno had been a dream. The most perfect and sad dream. A dream that had decided to leave him and pull him back to reality.
The search had been tiring but the yearning at night was devastating. Fugo couldn't believe, that once again, the person he held dear, was gone. Gone with the wind. Disappeared in the rain drops, evaporated by the rays of sun.
It had been 2 months and Fugo had finally let Narancia drag him back to weekly movie night.
He hadn’t meant to avoid his friends. He really hadn't. It was just the restlessness in his heart that didn't let him stay away from the last places he saw Giorno in hope to catch the sight of him again.
He had stayed awake for whole nights, wondering if he was at his house thinking of Giorno while the other stood by the lake they last visited together. Full nights wanting to run all over the city, afraid to miss him for a second.
He stood outside Bruno's apartment where that week's movie night was taking place. He had come empty handed, almost forgetting even his new apartment keys. He had walked in a trance, just avoiding people on the streets to avoid colliding.
He sighed, wishing at least having Franz at his side to get through the night. Considering even turning back to get him as an excuse to miss the event.
The door opened before he could think it twice. Abbacchio's annoyed face greeting him.
"I knew you'll be outside thinking about wanting to bolt, we heard the stairs. Come the fuck in before Bruno worries about you more and his hair turns out like mine... Or yours." his rough voice was like a sudden comfort. He had always been a rude worrier.
Abbacchio's hand found his wrist and pulled him inside. Taking his last opportunity to leave from him. The door clicked behind his back.
Once in, he almost smiled in relief at realizing Giorno had never been to movie night at Bruno's. Not a piece of him coming to haunt him. He almost smiled until sadness took over.
How many places missed Giorno? How many more places would Fugo visit and not be able to feel Giorno in the air? How many more places lacked as his life, the presence of his lover?
Bruno seemed to feel his distress on his way to greet him and pulled him in. Arms that didn’t fit like Giorno's around him. Arms he cherished all the same. Bruno was the only family he had left, a real brother.
In his arms he left himself breathe and calm down. Already commanding his oncoming tears to retreat. The smell of the sea calming the storm that had been happening in Fugo's heart for the last two months.
The rest went on like Giorno never existed. He felt like he was back to the old days. Only a far ache in place.
Mystery Inc. had just been trapped in the Wickles' manor when the bell rung.
Fugo had been so entranced by his comfort movie he ignored when Bruno moved to the door to check who it was. He heard the faraway movement of the house keys. Heavy with the so many keyrings Bruno collected.
The door must have been opened, because the harsh closing of it startled everyone. The slam rang through the room louder than the bell had, causing to momentarily stop time. Everyone's head quickly turning towards the hallway where Bruno stood.
They couldn't see much, the hallway wall blocking the sight. A faint sound of the keyrings clicking and the door locking.
Abbacchio stood up and everyone went tense as Bruno entered back to the living room.
"Who was it?" Narancia asked first to no one's surprise. He was always the first to voice his concerns, never with shame.
"Just some guy playing a prank, nothing to worry." Bruno replied fast, moving with ease to go back to his previous sitting place. His shoulders tense.
Narancia nodded and that was enough for everyone to turn their faces back to the movie. Or so thought as only a second later to heavy knocks interrupt them again.
Abbacchio stood up angrily ready to march towards the door. Bruno’s hand found Abbacchio’s wrist discouraging from any future confrontation. Fugo just sighed annoyed with whoever was bothering them. Until he heard it, muffled by the distance and walls and door and space.
"-Panni-" Giorno's voice.
He stood up so fast his head spun at the sudden movement. He scrambled to get to the door. Not listening to whatever Bruno was saying as he snatched the keys from his hands. Keyrings grounding him as he opened the door and saw.
Saw two beautiful blues, blues as the sky on the very first day of spring. Blues staring back at him, filling with relief at the sight of the man in front of him.
"Panni" Giorno's voice sounded rough with use… probably from yelling.
Fugo felt his world come down. His body wanting to give up and only being able to stay standing because of how he was leaning on the front door.
"You are alive." he heard himself say. He didn't know what his face looked like but it made a frown appear in Giorno's face.
"What you-… I mean, yes, I am, I-"
"You left."
"I didn't want to but-"
"You left me."
"Panni-"
"You need to leave." Bruno's voice startled Fugo, making him jump a bit. He turned to his side to see Bruno stand behind him.
Bruno wanted Giorno gone and Fugo's heart wanted to yell how could he want him gone when he had just come back to him.
"I need to talk to Panni-"
"Not now" Bruno interjected again. His voice filling with something mean and heavy. He was right. Fugo could barely decide how to feel about his lover sudden return.
Countless days spent searching, countless nights crying, missing, yearning. Waking up afraid to get the news of Giorno being dead. Of Giorno fooling him, playing with him, having a secret family, a secret lover. Of him not wanting Fugo anymore.
Fugo nodded in agreement. Giorno was alive, Giorno was there in front of him, Giorno had come back for him, to talk, to explain... Why he left him.
He felt the air leave his lungs and catch on his throat. Reality once again crashing on him. The impact inevitable, creating a riptide so strong he felt it resound in his bones, in his soul. Vibrate and break him.
Giorno was alive, a relief. Giorno had left him, in despair.
"I'm going home" Fugo announced once he found his voice back. Breaking both men stare battle, stealing their gazes and pulling them back to him.
"Panni" Giorno said with a smile. Smile so gorgeous, so pretty it made broke Fugo’s heart in ways he couldn’t begin to explain, to comprehend.
Giorno was back to him, in front of him even. Smiling so prettily… like nothing had happened. Like Fugo’s world hadn’t been destroyed and build up and destroyed all over, over the course of months. The culprit to his ache, his pain and yearning, in front of him. The sweet, sweet smile of a killer.
"Fugo" Bruno said at the same time with worry on his voice.
"I'm going home... Alone" Fugo added. Quickly running to his last scape from the hellish and confusing situation he stood in.
"I'll drive you home" Giorno quickly offered but was denied by Fugo shaking his head.
"I need to be alone..." he said turning towards the apartment. "I'm getting my stuff" he informed Bruno. Stuff that was none because he had gotten there with nothing, and his apartment keys rested inside his pocket.
He walked inside without waiting for a reply.
"What's going on?" Narancia asked again. So considerate of him to ask as if they weren't all eavesdropping. Fugo felt too tired to be mean or to be nice and just shook his head a little. Nothing to worry Narancia silly head.
He said he was leaving, everyone's protests dying on their lips at Fugo's tired form.
Narancia stood up from the sofa and hugged him. Fugo let him be, as if Narancia needed the hug more than he did.
He walked back to the door where Bruno and Giorno still stood.
He looked at Bruno, trying to tell him with his eyes that he was going to be okay even if he felt numb at the moment. He must have looked pitiful because it made Bruno sigh and lean in and kiss his forehead.
Fugo felt a momentary peace. His grandma used to do that too. It always seemed like a small healing spell. Specially for him and magical to him.
He walked outside, stood closer to Giorno. Looked at him, took all of him. His gold hair, bright eyes, and pink lips. His air and scent.
He felt a little dizzy.
"I'm glad you are alive." he said at last and this time, he left.
