Work Text:

Ghost had learned plenty of behaviors of being a cat from her stint in the human realm. This meant that now, when Luz and Amity spent their time lounging around the Owl House, or out in a tree fort, or wherever they may find themselves now that the world has calmed down, Ghost did cat things. It was actually pretty nice, it added to a sense of domesticity between the two girls and their time spent together. There was just one thing that seemed to get in the way.

Luz set down her book to glare at the palisman. Ghost, who had been asleep between the witch and the human as they read, was in the process of shifting positions. The creature hopped up into Amity’s lap, a personal favorite spot, and tracked upwards a tad to start kneading at the witch’s tummy.

Much to Luz’s chagrin.

“Luz? What’s wrong?”

The human was too busy scowling at Ghost to realize that Amity had noticed it. She blinked and looked up, seeing eyes filled with gentle concern. Upon realizing that she would have to explain to Amity, her girlfriend, that she was getting jealous over her cat

Already a deep red, the girl sputtered a bit and tried to play it off. “Nothin’s wrong! Just lost in thought, you know? This book’s got some- uh- Pretty complex characters!”

Amity raised an ear and an inquisitive eyebrow. “So why look at Ghost?”

“Well, you know it’s just easier to focus when, uhh,” Luz’s eyes flitted downwards again, and turned another shade of red. “When you’re just…You know…Thinking.”

The witch’s expression fell. She wasn’t amused. The book in her hands was set aside and she turned a little bit (though not enough to disturb Ghost, sadly). “Luz, that didn’t even make any sense. What’s going on?”

Well shit. Luz averted her gaze past Amity’s shoulder, her mind racing with any sensible, un-selfish, or just at the very least not super embarrassing way to tell her that she was jealous of her cat. Ghost readjusted herself while Luz panicked. Amity was in a flowy, black crop top, one that exposed a good deal of her tummy, and Ghost had laid her head down on the soft rolls of the witch’s midriff.

Luz took in a sharp breath. “IthinkimjealousthatGhostgetstotouchyourtummy.”

Amity blinked, “You’re what?”

The human whined pitifully and hid her face in her hands. “I’m jealous of Ghost.”

She heard her girlfriend stifle a giggle, prompting her to tuck her head further. But a gentle touch on her arm got her to peek up over her hoodie sleeve, straight into dazzling pools of gold. It made her take a slow breath, but it didn’t help the heat spreading all across Luz’s face. Amity had no right to be so pretty all the time, how did she not have any bad angles?

“Luz,” Amity giggled again, but a reassuring smile took the bite out of it. “She’s just a cat. Why are you upset?”

Luz sat up properly and pointed a finger at Ghost, and exclaimed, “She knows exactly what she’s doing!”

Her hands flew up to gesture in the air. “When she gets on your lap and kneads your tummy like this all smug-like! She doesn’t even use her claws, like she knows that you would stop her if she did! And don’t even get me started on when she lays down to go to sleep! She has this look in her eyes like she's taunting me, like she’s bragging!” Luz leaned in closer as she spoke, finger coming back to point directly at Ghost’s face.

Ghost just started to lick herself and Luz threw her hands up.

“Do you see what I-”

While Luz was lost in her passionate rant about the transgressions of a cat , Amity had been busy turning a red that the human was certain only occurred on the Boiling Isles, and only because of Amity. Confused, and a tad concerned, Luz fell back a little bit and let her arms fall back down. Had she said something rude? Was it bad to yell at palismen?

“You…want to touch my tummy?”

Oh .

Well shit .

They were both burning up by this point, Luz idly twiddling with a blade of grass while Amity shifted to sit up further. Eyes flicked to the ground and Luz’s head fell with her gaze, before she eventually, very slowly, nodded. She winced internally at how awkward this had all gotten; She should be able to talk to her girlfriend about things like this. Even if they got flustered when going for kisses still, they should be able to talk about this.

“It- Uh-...I-It looks soft.”

The silence hung a little longer. It was painful. But they were stuck in a game of chicken now, and neither wanted to be the one to try and break the tension. But, eventually, Amity couldn’t hold out much longer. Rip the bandaid off, as she had heard Luz say a few times.

“I wouldn’t mind it.”

“Oh!” Luz squeaked, feeling sweat bead on her forehead, “That’s! Awesome! That’s good to hear!”

Amity nodded, and they both giggled nervously.

“Because I wouldn’t mind either,” Luz managed past her laughter. The silence hung even heavier. It wasn’t the weirdest thing, it wasn’t even that adventurous. It was just a little awkward to admit, not to mention having to admit it because of a jealous outburst over a cat; Amity and Luz got flustered at the best of times. The human swallowed her nerves as best she could, doing her best to mentally steel herself.

‘It’s not weird. I can ask to do this. It isn’t weird.’

“Would it be weird if I asked-”

“It wouldn’t be weird if you-”

The girls’ voices overlapped, causing them both to halt in their trains of thought. It was just the sort of thing they needed to break the tension. Immediately they both broke out into laughter, faces fading from a fiery red to a light dusting of pink. The awkwardness was gone with a single act. Amity and Luz turned to face each other better, the witch even going so far as to remove the cat from her lap (take that , Ghost!).

“You can touch my tummy, Luz. If you want to.”

The human mentally fist pumped, and tentatively reached out with a finger to prod the witch’s belly. It was soft! Super soft, actually. The girl’s face lit up in excitement, and she did it again, unleashing a flurry of pokes. Amity started to giggle and it turned into a squeal.

“No! That tickles, Luz!”

“But it’s so fun to poke!!”

“I thought you said you wanted to knead it!”

Luz rolled her eyes playfully and stuck out her tongue, before eventually slowing down. Instead, she took her fingers and pressed them together, tucking her thumbs into her palms, and hovered over the witch’s waist. She pushed her fingertips into the soft rolls of Amity’s tummy, and started to flex her fingers, doing her best to imitate a cat’s motions. She knew they had both said it wouldn’t be weird, but the girl felt her cheeks heat up as she went, and a quick glance up saw that Amity’s pale complexion was contrasted by her turning tomato red. But the smile on her face gave Luz confidence.

“It’s really soft, Ami,” Luz giggled, doing her best to shake off the nerves, “Thank you for letting me do this.”

The witch giggled, “It’s not that big of a deal. It feels nice, anyways.”

A few minutes passed where Luz did nothing but experiment with different ways of appreciating her girlfriend’s tummy. Grabbing and poking parts of it, seeing what tickled and what didn’t, and overall just enjoying the feeling of the tension slipping away and getting to feel the soft skin under her fingertips. Then, she got a little bold.

“Can I use you as a pillow?”

Amity was back to that special shade of red, but she seemed to manage it a little better this time. It faded as quickly as it came, and the witch nodded enthusiastically. Luz shifted a little and shut her eyes, turning onto her back before resting her head on Amity’s belly. She sighed contently. This was what she needed. Ghost was absolutely justified in wanting to sleep here all the time, it was soft . She wasn’t quite sure how long had passed, but she opened her eyes when she felt dainty fingers brush some of her curls out of her face.

Sparkling, golden eyes cast down upon Luz in pure adoration, a smile gently tugging at the witch’s lips; Luz could feel the butterflies swarm in her stomach, and her heart swelled. The same hand that brushed the hair out of her face now played with dark curls and dragged fingernails across Luz’s scalp in the best way possible. And, as she felt herself get drowsy, Ghost hopped into the human's lap, kneading gently for a moment. Amity leaned down, eyes fluttering shut as she places a chaste, but lingering kiss on Luz’s lips.

She couldn’t ask for more.
