Work Text:

“Let’s see what the professor’s been working on, shall we?” The Doctor waggled an eyebrow at Charley.

“Must be something pretty exciting if the Sontarans were trying to steal it,” she agreed, and pulled the tarp off of the strange device. “We should have a few minutes at least before they regroup and come back.”

“Fascinating,” the Doctor murmured. “Not quite complete, but…” A quick pulse from the sonic screwdriver. “That should do it!” He looked back over at Charley and winked.

“That’s quite a…” Charley stopped, realizing she had no idea what she was looking at.

“Chaos field generator,” the Doctor supplied, and as the machine began to whir to life, his face fell. “Charley, I think I’ve made a–”

“--terrible mistake,” he concluded as the pulse of light faded. He was flat on his back if his view of the ceiling was anything to go by and– “one heart,” he gasped. “Charley, I think I’ve gone into cardiac arrest!” An uneasy stumble brought a too-familiar face into view. “Charley?”

“Doctor, you’re me!” his companion spluttered. “I know I’m usually down for anything but bloody hell, growing up in the 1920s didn’t prepare a girl for this. And not just…” she gestured vaguely below the belt and was at least a little gratified to watch her own cheeks blush. “But you’ve got way more than the usual five senses; I can taste the chaos energy radiating through the air from that machine.”

The Doctor grumbled, staggering to his too-small feet on his too-short legs. “At least you aren’t drowning in a sea of hormones.”

“Look, if you don’t like it, just zap us again and sort us out!” Charley let out a breath as she watched the Doctor’s shoulders slump. “It doesn’t work like that, does it?”

“Nope,” the Doctor sighed. “We’ll have to take a look at it after we deal with the Sontarans.”

“I’d nearly forgotten about the galaxy’s angriest potatoes,” Charley groaned. “Right, come on then.”

Notes:

Eagle-eyed readers will remember the unimaginatively named chaos fields from my earlier story I'm A Girl!, featuring a genderswapped Eleven, if you're into that sort of thing.
