Chapter Text
Ever since Lily was a young girl, one thing she knew was that no matter whether you are a muggle or a witch,
no boy will love a girl that looks like her. That's just the way things are. Boys only like the pretty girls, the
ones that look like they just walked off a magazine cover. Even in the movies, girls like her were only there
to make others look better; they were there only for comic relief, and Lily knew that.
So, when James Potter showed his attention to her for the first time, his affection didn't seem more than a mere joke.
How could it ever? She has fallen for the cruel jokes of teenage boys before, and she wasn't about to do it again.
There is no way in hell that the popular guy, the captain of the quidditch team, and one of the most attractive guys in the entire school, was actually interested in her. A fat girl.
Therefore, she has been ignoring him for the last four years. Stopping his every attempt as soon as it began.
Otherwise, she might have believed him. It would have been hard not to, wouldn't it? So she ignored him.
And even though, after a while, she became friends with the marauders, as they called themselves. Well, it was
more like she became friends with Remus Lupin because, seemingly, he is the only sensible one of the bunch, anyways.
However, being friends with him meant having to be around the others as well. Being around James...
That wouldn't have been much of a problem if he had just stopped. But no matter how much time went by. No matter
how many times she called him an idiot, he didn't seem to give up.
So, this is how she got here, sitting with Remus in the quiet of the library on a Saturday morning, because, let's be fair,
it is not likely that James would find his way there this early in the morning, especially on a Saturday, or in the library
at all. So it was the safest place to talk about this.
After all, Remus was her best option. And sure, she has talked about this with her friends but no matter how many times they have
told her that she is beautiful and that he would be a fool to think otherwise. She could not shake the feeling that they are saying because they are her friends, which means that of course, they wouldn't say anything else. As well as the fact that they would never miss out on the opportunity to talk shit about James.
But Remus is James' best friend, so he must know how it really is, and she happens to think that they have also become quite
good friends, as well as the fact that Lupin is way too nice to lie to her about something like this or at least she hopes.
She hopes that he will tell her if James is just messing around and that this is just another one of his pranks. It wouldn't
be surprising considering how much time he spends in detention. It would be awfully long one as it is, but still just a prank.
And the thing is, Lily doesn't really know what she would like the truth to be. Part of her wants it to be just that—a prank,
maybe just because that simply would be easier; it would match what she knows to be the truth. On the other hand, a part of her wishes it wasn't so.
She wishes that all of those people were wrong. That she could be loved despite the way she looks. Sometimes she dreams that Potter truly is madly in love with her, and all of his words are true.
It's something she spends way more time thinking about than she would like to admit. That is why she asked Remus to
talk—to try and maybe finally find out the truth.
