The Dust Settles

Summary:

The kid needed someone, though, and while Chizome wasn't the person for the job, something told him no one else would bother. Unfortunately, civilians tended to adhere to the bystander effect more often than not because heroes were commonplace. Unfortunately, it was just another disgusting thing about society, and it looked like he was going to break it.

I couldn't think of a good summary, but I hope this paragraph pulls you in. I'm a sucker for parental Hero Killer, dammit.

Notes:

This is mostly a side project while I wait to update one of my bigger fics, I do plan to make this a series since as I worked on this one-shot, it gave me other ideas.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The day started like any other for Chizome, wake up, eat breakfast, do various tasks before heading out into the city, and take on his form of justice. He needed to eat in between, of course, but honestly, he could care less about that since his work was far more critical. The term could be used loosely since it was important to him more than anything and something he thought Society deserved.

He could probably be considered a villain due to the things he did, killing pro-heroes who he thought weren’t worth the spit on the sidewalk. Most of them weren’t, in his opinion, driven by corruption and greed, not to mention they were all about fame and what could up their popularity and all that.

It was disgusting…

All Chizome could see was the filth that littered society, not to mention there were far more heroes than most places needed. But only a few earned the name hero, and that list was pretty low, regardless. Underground heroes earned his respect, not to mention All Might, and people could call him a hypocrite, but he didn’t give a shit.

Sighing softly, Chizome took his sword out of the hero he had just slain and worked on cleaning up the mess of blood that littered his weapon. He glanced around as he peeked out of the alley to make sure the coast was clear, even if it were a nice quiet day. One could always be too careful, you know.

Sure enough, people were going about their business, doing whatever the hell they did, which wasn't necessary to him since they weren't being fake. As he stepped out, a tiny figure caught his attention, a child; it would seem.

Not just some child, though; this kid seemed almost like they had seen something they shouldn't have. Something told Chizome he needed to help them, or he wouldn't receive any, to begin with, but it wasn't his problem. It just wasn't.

Not that he meant to; his goddamn body moved on its own like he was on fucking autopilot, for God's sake. "Kid." He spoke after a moment, walking over to him and squatting down in front of him.

It only took a moment for the child to snap out of his stupor, looking beyond terrified of Chizome. For what it was worth, though, in a fit of madness at some point, he had cut off his goddamn nose…so that was fair. He had a right to be scared, even if the person he was scared of was trying to help him.

“Hey kid…is everything okay?” He asked.

The boy continued to stare at him a moment more before speaking up. “N-no..” He whispered, voice sounding broken.

Okay, at least he could get an answer out of the child, that was something, but still, he had many questions. “Where’s your parents, kid?” He asked, watching as the boy curled in on himself, cringing at the question.

“I- my quirk-” The boy said, eyes looking down at the ground. “M-my quirk manifested. I killed them.” He said before the dam burst, and he started sobbing, and damn if it didn’t make Chizome’s heart break into a thousand pieces. No child deserved to be this upset, not to mention lay witness to the death of their parents, let alone anyone ever. This wasn't something he should get involved in, but he probably had no choice considering this kid wouldn't be given a chance in society.

He could easily be labeled a villain due to his quirk, another unfortunate side-effect to this hero society they lived in. This meant the only option he had was taking this kid in because who the fuck else would? Not to mention, putting him into the foster system wasn’t a good idea either because people were jerks and, again, could label people villains if their quirks weren’t what society thought was good.

Fuck…

Chizome was in no position to take care of a child, but he had no other choice since he didn’t think he could trust anyone else to do it. The situation put a damper on any plans of the hero slaying in the future, especially since someone needed to take care of the kid.

“All right, kid. I think we should get you somewhere safe.” He said as he picked the crying child up and walked along the sidewalk toward his home. “Name’s Chizome, and I’ll take care of you from now on.” He decided.

Silence followed them for a few blocks, the boy still shaken, tired from sobbing his heart out. “Tenko…” He said timidly before adding on. “A-aren’t you scared of me? I- my hands killed people-”

He supposed it was a valid question, but honestly...

“That wasn’t your fault, kid..” He supposed it probably wasn’t enough assurance, but it would do for now.

Um, hope you enjoyed. Thanks for giving it a shot.
