Work Text:
“I erased your memory of your first date.”
Now that, Asa wasn’t expecting. “Huh?!”
It’s 8 PM. Denji’s out to the grocery store. Again.
Asa’s doing her homework. Well. Was.
And then, Nayuta just had to enter the room. Stoic as ever. And then, she just had to say those words.
She’s still silent. Seems like she’s waiting for Asa to actually respond with words.
“What the heck do you mean by that?”
“I…” Nayuta’s not pausing because she’s uncertain, she’s pausing because of the stupidity of this motherfucker . “I did exactly what I said.”
“But… but… I remember it?”
Nayuta sighs. Asa’s not particularly bright when it comes to all things Denji. She should know that already. But it continues to surprise her, time and time again. “Remember when he stood you up?”
“Well, yeah, of course I- ohhhhh…”, Asa trails off, realization dawning on her face.
Nayuta, meanwhile, is still expressionless. “Yeah.”
“But why?”, Asa asks. Pretty obvious question there.
Nayuta shrugs. “I didn’t like you.”
A moment of silence.
“I… honestly, you were probably right to think that…”, Asa admits, dejected.
Nayuta shrugs again. “This was before I figured out you had the War Devil in your head,” she points out. “I didn’t want Denji to date, because all of the other women in his life were terrible.”
She pauses. “Except Kobeni, I guess.”
Then, she puts a finger to her chin, thinking. “Also, I didn’t like your smell. Still don’t.”
“Hey!”, Asa squawks. “But, as for the other reason… yeah. I get it.”
She sighs. “I dunno… I’m still pretty nervous about all this.”
Nayuta shakes her head. “Don’t be. I have Yoru under control. And I think you are good for Denji.”
“I… do not think he shares everything with me,” she says quietly. “Both because he thinks I am too young, and because… a small part of him is still scared of me.”
“The scars that my predecessor left behind have not simply disappeared. They probably never will.”
She’s beginning to tear up, now. That doesn’t happen very often.
“I just hope that… you can be there for him, when I cannot.” She rubs her eyes, sniffling.
Now Asa feels bad. “C’mere,” she says, approaching Nayuta for a hug.
Who slaps her hand. “Don’t touch me! You still stink.”
“Wow, okay. What a way to ruin the mood.”
“That is what I do, yes.”
“No. Do NOT do that again. I swear to god.”
“I absolutely will.”
“You’re like, ten years old! Do not do that on purpose.”
“I will, and you cannot stop me.”
“Please, no. I’m begging you.”
“Also, I want to remain an only child.”
“STOP!”
“I will stop if you buy me ice cream”
“For the love of- fine, I’ll do it. Now please leave. I still have work to do.”
