The moment I saw you there was something different, yet I didn’t think about it not yet at least. Why would I pause at this slightly deviant behaviour? All you enforcers are supposed to be the same. Nurtured, seasoned, and educated from a young age enough for me to think that maybe it’s in all of your nature to be this vile towards those who don’t come from the same city as yours. You, however, changed that thought as I continued to watch and possibly observe you as you lingered near dear sis.
I wonder what made you not look at Zaun with such contempt or disgust with your eyes. Why don’t you forcefully demand those things? Maybe they haven’t corrupted you with their filth. Why are you so naive to fall for such an innocent act? Maybe it was then that something inside me clicked. Did you see what everyone else saw me before Silco? That weak Powder that everyone says needs to grow up. Toughen up?
I want to know why you make me think of you this way. I want to know what makes you behave in such a manner. I want to know this drive you have as you pondered after that fight with dear sis. You live such lavishly and yet you want to be an enforcer.
“This leads me to my next question?” Jinx plopped herself on the edge of the rooftop that saw into Caitlyn’s house. She pondered as she watched an angry-looking Caitlyn pacing in her room venting to Vi about something. Might be about her parents… Or the council… Or maybe me “What makes you so different?” Jinx rested her chin on the palm of her hand as she continued watching the scene before her.
Oddly, I thought that I loathed you for taking my sister away. Mocking my inability to keep my family within my grasp. Taunting me endlessly alongside Mylo and Claggor for my insufficient efforts to make things right. A permanent reminder that I did this to us. That bond will be no more but… I’m starting to think that you are opening my eyes to something. I don’t know what that is, and I can’t seem to place a word on it.
…
Jinx leaned against the wall in the alleyway as she saw Caitlyn tug on her hood trying to hide her face from the public. She waited a little bit before continuing to follow her until they reached a warehouse. More specifically the now-ruined dinner party that changed everything.
She lurked in the shadows, keeping her guard up in case anything happened, all the while keeping an eye on Caitlyn. She could see that Caitlyn was taking in all the destruction, chaos, memories, and emotions that were tied to the place.
“I swear to you, Mother.” Jinx perked up as she heard Caitlyn’s voice in the once-silent space. “I will find Jinx and make her answer her crimes. No matter what it takes,”
With curiosity, Jinx’s mind didn’t filter through her next actions. As if it was an impulse in her mouth she responded. “Awe, you give me so much attention,” Caitlyn whipped around to where Jinx’s location was coming from. Jinx stepped out of her hiding spot to look at her and kept on walking.
“Jinx!” Caitlyn saw her and she reached for her rifle but grabbed nothing. Jinx only clicked her tongue at her amateur actions.
“You should have known better than to come to Zaun weaponless.” Caitlyn glared at Jinx who was only pointing out the obvious.
“And you should have known better than to blow up the council. You just created a war between Piltover and Zaun.” Jinx just laughed at Caitlyn’s words. “You find this funny? You almost killed my mother in that explosion,” Jinx stopped laughing and only looked at her.
“Oh?” Jinx tilted her head as if she was processing that information. “Guess we both have another thing in common after all.” Jinx sadly admitted as she looked on over to the empty chair that was riddled with bullets. She could still clearly see Silco’s body slumped as his words echo in her mind. Comforting her in these harsh times.
Caitlyn’s mind was turning its gears as she didn’t want to be deceived by Jinx once more. She had let her guard down twice before Jinx and she couldn’t let that happen again. So, she watched Jinx’s gaze slowly look somewhere else. She followed that gaze to the chair that had nothing but holes in it. She remembered that there was a body in it before. There was something in that gaze that told her that it was real.
Her instincts urged her to look into it. To find out what it was that made Jinx confidently stand before her even after hearing Caitlyn’s declaration.
No no. Jinx is just a loose cannon just like what everyone says. She has tricked so many people. And yet… I believed Vi when she said that her little sister was still inside of her.
Caitlyn gave in to her instinct and asked. “And what’s that?”
“We changed,” Jinx said as she spread out her arms to highlight where they are. “We are no longer the people we used to be before all of this.” She froze for a second before dropping her hands. “We’re different,” Jinx reverted back to her sad mood. “Can anyone really accept us for being this different?” Jinx asked with eyes that looked directly at Caitlyn seeking answers even though she didn’t know at the time.
“Of course,” Caitlyn easily lied as if she was responding to one of the elitists, she had encountered numerous times at parties thrown back at her family home. She watched Jinx’s eyes and facial features flash her disappointment and then rested at resignation. She watched as Jinx only closed her eyes and blew a shaky breath.
“I see,” Jinx finally said with resolve, but it still didn’t cover the hurt that danced in her voice. “It seems that I should have known better.” Jinx nodded as she began taking steps back to make her exit. “Then I wish you luck in capturing me, until next time, little deviant,”
Caitlyn didn’t waste any time before rushing home, but the conversation stuck with her. She began applying Jinx’s words to her childhood. She disliked the lifestyle her parents introduced her into the noble world. Especially when they were all elitist snobs who haven’t seen the entire world yet.
We both have another thing in common. Jinx’s voice whispered in her ear.
What do you mean by another, Jinx? Is this a ploy for you to mess with my mind? I won’t let you win again. Caitlyn shook her head as continued on her way home.
Can anyone really accept us for being this different? Caitlyn could hear and feel the desperation, honesty and anxiety that came with the question. She understood the feeling of being different especially with a wealthy background such as hers. She knew there was going to be some backlash on it but some days it gets to her. On other days it gives her the determination from doing what is most necessary.
Can anyone? Jinx’s voice rang once more, and Caitlyn also wondered now that the idea had been planted in her mind.
Maybe Vi? … She easily turned on me when things didn’t go our way the first time though. It’s just a one-time thing though. Honestly, Jinx… I don’t know for sure myself.
Little deviant. Jinx’s name for her mocked as if it was answering her thoughts.
It’s still not going to stop me from catching you, Jinx. Just because I’m a little different from everyone else in Piltover doesn’t pardon your crimes no matter what excuses you have. A criminal is a criminal, and they need to answer for their crimes. So, watch out Jinx I’m coming for you.
