This is for the DCMK Prompt Week 2! :D

Work Text:

It was a perfect day, the weather was warm, and there had yet to be a murder. Shinichi was beyond pleased. He managed to get to the grocery store, grab his various items and make it home without interruption.

With the beautiful weather, Shinichi decided a little lawn care was in order and thus started off to the shed in the side yard to grab various tools. The hedges needed a trim, and the flower beds need to be weeded. It was good to get some sun every once and a while. Shinichi knew he was pale as a ghost from his lack of sun exposure, so this should help color him up a bit.

After several hours of work, the yard was back to its shapely state. Shinichi smiled at a job well done. He glanced at his watch only to realize that he had to get ready if he wanted to be at the heist tonight on time. Shinichi put the tools away before running inside to shower and change clothes. He chose something casual, jeans with a t-shirt. He wasn’t planning on actively participating in the heist, so his appearance was not of high priority.

Upon making it to the museum that Kid was set to rid in an hour, the crowds had formed into a thick sea of screaming fans, posters included. Shinichi had to laugh. If only they knew the truth. That Kid was nothing more than a school kid himself. Shinichi passed the checkpoint before entering the building. Nakamori-keibu sighed at the sight of him, “What are you doing here, Kudo?”

“Nothing much, just came to see if you wanted me to start hunting for traps.”

Nakamori-keibu huffed, “I don’t need some high schooler to help with my job. Stay out of the way!”

Shinichi wanted to snicker but held back. Angering the man would likely get him kicked from future heists, and neither he nor Kid wanted that. Shinichi made himself scarce, disappearing into the many halls, looking out for traps. Kid might have laid out. From what he saw, the task force was not going to have a pleasant night. Kid had laid out an oddly large round of traps. Something must have been bothering Kid since he seemed to be a bit overzealous today. By the time Shinichi made it to the roof, he had counted over sixty different traps, and none were pleasant.

He glanced at his watch and counted the seconds before hearing a large bellow, “Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the show!” Shinichi looked to see a speaker on the roof. Kid must have planned to be heard by all tonight. Shinichi chuckled as the cries of the task force echoed through the speaker as he waited for Kid to join him. The door finally opened, and Kid walked out into the moonlight in all his splendor, cape blowing in the breeze. “Evening, Kid,” Shinichi chuckled, “So, what’s bothering you?”

Kid grinned; it wasn’t his usual shark-like grin but something more fierce, “What has you thinking something is wrong, Meitantei?”

Shinichi raised an eyebrow, something was off, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. Kid walked over to him, taking his hand before leading Shinichi on a dance with music that only Kid could hear. Shinichi’s confusion only grew before he held the gem of the night to the moon. It didn’t glow red as Shinichi had hoped. Instead, it seemed to swallow all the light in the area, surrounding the pair in darkness. When the light returned, Kid was standing there with a blank expression before he blinked and came to. He looked at Shinichi before grinning something close to manic. Kid leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Shinichi’s neck before pressing their lips together. Shinichi gasped in shock before Kid’s tongue pressed past his lips, plundering Shinichi’s mouth.

Shinichi brain stopped functioning because he was lost. Had Kid figured out he liked him? No, something was wrong; something was different. “Thank you, boy.” Kid smiled before bowing deeply and disappearing in a puff of smoke. Shinichi looked for his glider but saw nothing.

Shinichi ran a hand through his hair as he tried to figure out what was going on. Something on the roof caught his attention; it was the sapphire that Kid had stolen, only instead of the brilliant blue sheen the stone had earlier in the day, it had changed colors to a milky white stone. Shinichi picked it up before a howl of panic echoed through his skull. Shinichi almost dropped the stone at the suddenness of it.

Shinichi!!!! Shinichi looked around, wondering where Kid’s voice was coming from. It sounded like he was right next to him. NO! OH MY GOD!

Shinichi frowned, looking around some more before looking back at the stone, its color had changed again, and now it was a terrible shade of grey, almost black. “Why is this stone changing colors, and where are you, Kid? This is not very funny.”

I’m in your hand, dammit! Shinichi stared at the stone, blinking.

“Huh?” Shinichi replied with his intelligence.

What do you mean, ‘Huh?’ I am saying I am stuck in this damn rock! Where is my body?

Shinichi sighed, “Okay, funs over, come out right now. I’m not finding this funny.”

I’m not joking, Shinichi!

Shinichi huffed, staring at the stone as it changed color yet again, “You have got to be kidding me.” Of course, OF COURSE, Kid would get himself into a mess again. Shinichi pocketed the gem and started towards the stairs.

Shinichi? Shinichi! I can’t see anything!

“Deal with it. I’m heading home before we ‘talk’ about the mess you have gotten yourself into this time.”

Are you mad at me?

“Mad, no, more like exasperated.” Oh… okay.

Shinichi made his way home before closing and locking the door. He toed off his shoes before padding to the kitchen, flicking on the light before making his way over to the coffee pot. Shinichi set the machine to brew an entire pot as he felt he was not getting any sleep any time soon. Once the coffee began to drip, Shinichi pulled out the stone and placed it on the counter. “Okay, Kaito, why don’t you explain what happened?”

Shinichi waited for a moment but heard nothing. Confused, he picked up the stone, and then you found me.

Oh… he had to be touching the stone to hear Kaito, great , just lovely. “One more time, please. I didn’t hear you, appears I have to be holding the gem to hear you.”

I don’t know what happened exactly; I felt something was off the moment I picked up the stone, like I wasn’t quite in control, but that got drastically worse once I walked into the moonlight, and then suddenly, I couldn’t feel anything. I was utterly lost, wondering why you looked so large. It then dawned on me that I was probably in the rock as I saw myself before I disappeared. Then you found me, and now we are here.

Kaito! ” Shinichi sighed exasperatedly, “I know you want to find pandora, but this is the second gem you have found that has done something to you! I could handle you speaking in tongues with the last stone, but what on earth am I supposed to do with this? A gem hijacked your body!”

You think I like this any more than you do!? I’m the one stuck in here!

“And I get to be the one to fix it!” Shinichi argued back, some part of him finding this whole debacle ridiculous.

Jerk.

“I can hear you,” Shinichi muttered; he was pretty sure he heard Kaito huff. “Any idea on how to find your body?”

No… but I might know someone that can help… as much as I don’t want to.

“Oh,” Shinichi chuckled; I knew who Kaito was talking about. “She helped with the last stone.”

She also told me to stop while I was ahead….

Shinichi grinned, hearing Kaito tsk, “She isn’t wrong.”

And what! Let those crows get pandora first? Nothing good comes from them getting their hands on immortality.

Shinichi shook his head; while Kaito had a point, it didn’t matter if he kept getting into trouble because of other gems. “I’ll call Koizumi.”

Shinichi pulled out his phone and started dialing the number before Koizumi called him; Shinichi had to laugh because, of course, she would. “Hello, Koizumi-san; you have impeccable timing.”

“Well, I have a visitor at my place that is missing a soul… or rather, has the wrong one. I warned Kuroba about this heist, and he ignored me,” Koizumi sighed, sounding as done with this as Shinichi was.

“Okay, guess I will head over there shortly? Can you keep him contained till I get there?”

“Oh, that’s no issue; he seems to be rather interested in me, if you know what I mean.” Koizumi chuckled. Shinichi could feel himself blush.

Oh no! She is not using this as an excuse to do what she wants me!

“Brought this on yourself,” Shinichi muttered, hearing Koizumi chuckle again.

“I’m not interested in easy men. I like them spirited till I break them.”

Creepy but also expected of the witch. Shinichi poured his coffee into his travel mug before starting for the door. “I’ll be there in a few hours.”

“Alright, Kudo-kun.”

Shinichi hated the idea of entering Koizumi’s mansion almost as much as Kaito. It gave off vibes of ‘something is wrong,’ and Shinichi didn’t want to deal with it, but he couldn’t leave Kaito in a gemstone. The door opened before Shinichi even managed to knock. “We have been expecting you,” Koizumi’s butler bowed; the man was almost as creepy as the mansion.

Shinichi knew where he was going, so he started right for the living room. Upon entering, he saw Kaito’s body draped across Koizumi's lap, sans Kaitou Kid's costume. Shinichi’s eye twitched; Kaito’s body was in nothing but his boxers, and if the situation allowed, Shinchi was sure those would be gone too. “What did you cast on him?”

“On this one? Nothing. This is the work of my valentine’s day spell that Kuroba just shrugged off. It appears to be active still.” Koizumi laughed, the volume grating in Shinichi’s nerves.

“Can you stop trying to use your magic to get Kaito in bed?”

“Oh, no, I can not; I need a strong man to continue my bloodline,” Koizumi grinned. Shinichi could feel Kaito’s disgust, and neither of them had any interest in this woman’s desire.

“Okay, well, what are we going to do about this,” Shinichi waved at Kaito’s body.

“Oh, that’s easy, hand me Kuroba, and I will swap them back.”

“And your price?” Shinichi was NOT handing Kaito over that easily.

“I won’t take from him. My magic won’t work anyway but you… How about your desire?”

Shinichi stilled, eyes wide. Was she seriously asking him to give up his feelings for Kaito? Sure, they were unrequited, but that didn’t make this something he was willing to toss aside. Shinichi? Can you ask her to clarify what desire she is talking about? I don’t want her taking your dreams of being a detective away.

“She isn’t talking about that….”

How do you know? I mean, I can’t see her expressions while in your pocket.

“Fine, I… will you allow them to come back?”

“No, you will forfeit them to me permanently.” Koizumi grinned. Shinichi swallowed, mulling over the choice before nodding.

“I… I accept,” Shinichi muttered softly.

Kaito was not happy with this; what do you mean, yes?! Shinichi, what is she making you give up permanently?

Shinichi fetched Kaito out of his pocket before he heard Kaito gasp, likely seeing his body's state. “Swear you won’t hurt him.”

“I swear on my magic I won’t cause him any bodily harm.” Koizumi smiled, standing as Kaito’s body moved for her to stand. She looked at Kaito’s body, “Follow me.” She spoke with a firm tone and smiled when Kaito’s body followed her like a puppy. She turned to face Shinichi, standing just an arm's reach now, hand outstretched. Shinichi hesitated before extending his hand out; Koizumi placed her hand over Kaito before a red glow began to spread from his hand, soon blocking out the natural light of the room. Shinichi felt something tug at his heart before he collapsed.

---

Kaito opened his eyes, a blanket covering him. He sat up swiftly, ignoring how his head was swimming. Akako had a hand on Shinichi’s head; a soft red glow surrounded it. Kaito was up instantly as he pushed her away from Shinichi. “What have you done to him?!”

“Nothing that will do him any harm. I merely took his feeling for you. All of them, as far as he is considered, you are nothing more than a stranger now,” Akako cackled. Kaito’s stomach dropped as he looked down at Shinichi’s sleeping form.

“Y-you what?” Kaito didn’t want to believe that was true; Shinichi couldn’t have forgotten him. They… they were best friends and Kaito’s only true confidant. There were no secrets between them. “W-why would he give that up?”

“Well, I didn’t express what desire he was giving up. He assumed I meant his romantic feeling for you, but I meant his desire to be your friend,” Akako stood, cackling all the while, “What will you do now, thief? I warned you that this would end poorly for you, and you ignored my warning.”

Kaito blinked back the tears as he looked down at Shinichi; something landed before him. Kaito looked down to see a set of clothes before remembering his state of undress. Kaito numbly picked up the clothes, sliding them on before he gathered Shinichi in his arms. “He will sleep till morning, so you have a few hours to rid yourself from his life.” Kaito nodded before heading out of the mansion.

The taxi ride home took both forever and not long enough. Kaito managed to keep the tears in check till he crossed the threshold of Shinichi’s house. Kaito sniffled before the dam and slid down the door, clutching Shinichi close to his head. His carelessness took something Kaito couldn’t replace. Akako said that his feelings wouldn’t return; their friendship was gone, as was all the support that Shinichi offered Kaito in the hunt for his father’s killers.

Kaito sobbed for ages, running out of tears. He took a shuddering breath before he got up, carrying Shinichi to his room and laying him down gently in the bed before covering him with the covers. Kaito looked around the room, scouring it for anything that connected Kaito to Shinichi; it tore at the raw wound that was his heart as he removed himself from Shinichi’s life. They had known each other for several years, and now it meant nothing.

After going through the rest of the house, Kaito had gathered up everything in a few bags left by the front door. Kaito walked back up to Shinichi’s room. Looking down at his sleeping form. “I’m sorry, Shinichi… I… I can’t even begin to apologize enough for this.” Kaito couldn’t look at him any longer; he ran from the house, making the long trek home. With the door shut, Kaito broke again, crying his heart out. He had planned to tell Shinichi how he felt once he found Pandora. He knew Shinichi returned his feelings, but Kaito knew with the risk of his job, he could make something of them.

He had to wait till the war was won, or so he believed. Kaito never imagined that his luck would sour on him in such a dramatic fashion. What point was there in winning his battle if he was alone in the end? Aoko couldn’t stand Kaito after finding out he was Kid. She swore that she would never tell anyone because she understood his reasons, but she couldn’t be friends with someone that belittled the police, even if it was for a good cause.

Kaito was so broken that his first kiss with Shinichi had been because of someone else, and now he’d never get to know what those lips would feel like. That tore into his heart anew as Kaito sobbed even louder, curled into a ball. He had ruined the best thing to happen to him, all because he thought he was better, more innovative than Akako and her stupid prophecies. Now, look where that got him, heartbroken and alone.
