Work Text:
Enid is looking at the other side of the room. Specifically, at the dark silhouette of her roommate who was busily typing on her typewriter . The werewolf can’t help but stare at the two perfectly made braids that reveal the pale skin of Wednesday’s neck.
Since the last semester incident with the Hyde, Enid felt somehow empty. It worsened as they went on holiday, and she had been alone in her family. Even though she turned into a full wolf during the red moon, her bond with her mother didn’t strengthen.
On top of that, Ajax and she broke up. Out of sight, out of mind? Not really. They just discovered that they were more in a friend-based relationship. It hadn’t been heartbreaking, but it was still sad, and all put together, she was depressed.
All along these few weeks she didn’t feel at the right place, didn’t feel at home. She was missing something. Someone.
She was relieved when she came back to Nevermore and to the room she shared with Wednesday. But the relief faded away when Enid faced her roommate’s side empty. And so she understood. She was missing her darker-than-night expressionless roomie. She feared she would never see her again.
What if she – or her parents – decided that Nevermore was a waste of time and there was no need to go back?
Her fears disappeared when the door opened on Lurch, the butler of the Addams family, carrying Wednesday cello and luggage. Right after him, the so long-awaited girl followed and Enid jumped out of her bed and ran for her, her arms wide open.
Of course, the goth took a step back, eyes glaring at the colorful werewolf, straight and cold as a gravestone.
“Oh, yeah, sorry… still no touchy I guess?” Enid asked with a taint of sadness in her voice. She was hoping that since they hugged once, the ice block started to melt, and she could do it again. Wrong guess?
“I’m still not very fond of hugging,” Wednesday said with a dull tone. Maybe she saw the depressed feelings painted on Enid’s face because she continued “but I may accept some less effusive greetings, as long as it doesn’t last too long”.
The blonde happily took the black-haired girl’s hands while hopping, and she told her how she was happy to be back in the academy, and that they were still roomies, and then she started to relate her holidays under the patient gaze of the Addams girl.
After that, the Nervermore routine stayed unbroken for weeks. Wednesday being as usual, distant, and cold to everyone, except for Enid who was granted some slight smiles and minimal contacts from time to time. Contacts which made her heart skip a beat.
Sometimes, she also felt a gaze on her back and every time she turned to check, she could see the dark uniform of her friend in the perimeter. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but she couldn’t help but believe she was the one who looked at her.
Enid herself was often staring at the Raven when she let her mind go. And, of course, every time she was caught faulty by the penetrating black eyes looking at her without blinking, with a questioning gleam.
As she couldn’t explain her behavior, she had no choice but to turn her head, blushing. Why couldn’t she hold that glance?
She got the answer one night. She went to Yoko’s to watch a movie, and gossip as usual, and she opened up to her friend about these events and feelings. Which made the vampire laugh sweetly.
“Dear, you have a crush, that’s what happens to you!” she said, a hand placed on the wolf’s shoulder with a warm smile on her face.
And it all came together. Of course, it was a crush! And she was crushing for the worst possible person, Wednesday Addams, well known to be bad at feelings – if she even could have some –, her friend and roommate that she wouldn’t be able to avoid because they were living in the same room.
Shit.
Yoko must have seen her worries on her face because she hugged her gently. “I’m not a hundred percent sure, but she might have a thing for you too. She always keeps you in sight and you’re the only one she’s touchy with. As much as Wednesday Addams can be at least,” she added with a laugh.
“What if it is not the case? I- I don’t want to make it weird between us. She’s a precious friend, at least as precious as you!”. Her eyes started to get wet.
“Wow, that’s harsh! I thought I was the most precious in your eyes!” she said with a falsely offended look, making Enid giggle. “Well, you can’t be sure without asking. You also can try to forget your feelings, but I think it would be a waste.”
The discussion with her nocturnal friend made her feel better for a time. But quickly she started to be even more aware of the goth presence, smiling sometimes to the very insignificant detail like her smoothing her skirt or reading in her bed.
She also started to feel depressed or angry every time someone was catching the girl’s attention. On top of the most bothersome people was Xavier who clearly showed interest before and seemed to try his luck with her Wednesday.
Enid scolded herself. She was not hers.
Sometimes she couldn’t stop her inner wolf expressing its anger and letting out a menacing growl when he was too pushy. He always retreated before her burning blue glance, but he also always came back the day after. Her reaction was making her roommate smirk for an unknown reason.
She couldn’t forget her crush. In fact, it was worse, because she was sure it was not just a crush anymore. She was in love with Wednesday Addams and it made her sick not to be able to tell her.
So there she is, in her bed, knees on her chest, staring sadly at the back of her friend and love. She is feeling the urge to hug her, but she is restraining it, digging her claws in her legs. She moans slightly from pain, physical and mental.
Wednesday stops typing and turns around, one eyebrow arched. When she sees the state of sadness in which Enid was, she seems surprised.
“What puts your usual annoyingly colorfulness into this state of delicious suffering?”
Enid sighs. For anyone else, it would look like she was taking pleasure in the tortured view of her roommate. But Enid knows better that she is actually being considerate. She remains silent.
“Come on, talk. Or don’t make such distracting noises while I’m writing my novel.” There is a bit of irritation in her voice. Enid knows how important her schedule is, and she would probably have murdered anyone other than the blonde to make them stop being noisy.
Enid gulps, gathering her courage.
“It hurts. There.” She puts her hand on her chest, above her heart.
“It can be a heart attack, even if I doubt it, considering you’re a healthy werewolf. Do you have any other symptoms? Nausea, difficulty to breathe?” Wednesday stands up and comes next to Enid to check her pulse.
“It’s not a heart attack!”. Enid laughs briefly and looks at her seriously. “It hurts because something is missing. There’s a gap where my heart should be.”
“I checked; it’s pulsing so I’m pretty sure it is not missing. You seem incoherent, maybe a stroke?”
“Stop it, Miss Ominous Bird, let me talk. It’s important!” the werewolf cries.
The goth stands still, smirking, probably because of what she takes it as a compliment. Enid takes a deep breath.
“When I said my heart is missing, it was not literal. Of course, I would be dead, otherwise… It’s missing because you took it without even knowing. You captured it in your hand and put it in a cage and it makes me sick because I seem not to be able to see yours, even less touch it, as much as I would like to…” she drowned her blue eyes into the dark ones of her friend. “I love you, Wednesday Addams!”
A long silence. Enid feels her chest tighten as she becomes sure to be rejected. Then, Wednesday breaks the silence.
“You, silly puppy.” She smiles. “Have you become blind? Of course, you couldn’t find my heart, as there is none to be found in this chest.”
“Stop with-“ she stops as the beautiful pale and cold hand makes her way to her cheek, caressing it gently.
“There’s none because you took it too.”
What? What did she say?
The hand goes behind her head, slowly, and pulls her closer to the dark eyes while the pale face moves forward at the same time.
“I love you too, Enid Sinclair” she whispers a second before their lips meet in a soft and warm kiss.
