Chapter 1: Wishing on the Evening Star

Summary:

Celeste goes stargazing on a cold February night

Chapter Text

Years of running a museum with no new discoveries had taken a toll on her poor brother. Many times he’d mumble in his sleep about new displays, frantically hooting about being sold fakes. He’d mirror words from his dreams on occasion: fraud, bore, has-been, whatever insults his nightmares were hurtling towards him. He'd never let Celeste in on the whole of his insecurities, but the exhaustion in Blathers' eyes and voice said enough to her.

She wasn't exactly sure how to fix things; her cheery optimism didn't do much to ease her brother's worries. All that could be done, in her mind, was to wish and pray he felt better.

A dark night with clear skies was the perfect opportunity to stargaze. Usually a night like this would warrant being in the museum observatory, but Celeste just wanted to be among the stars on this particular one (even if it was early February). With their fuzzy caplet on, they laid on their back and watched the sky twinkle with constellations; what they wouldn't give to be up there in the infinite cosmos, as much as they loved their life as it was.

They noticed a glisten out of the corner of their eye: a sputtering star trailed its way across the sky and caught Celeste's attention. Like anyone would, they made a wish.

"I wish that my brother could see something really special—the most stunning, delightful dinosaur out there! Yeah… that'd excite him again..."

They didn't really think fully as the words came out of her beak, but they had wished for Blathers' happiness on shooting stars oh so many times. Maybe, they thought, if wishing for something simple wouldn't work, then wishing for something impossible would. It was a silly and desperate thought, but it wouldn't hurt.

“Something to really make him smile... that would be… nice…”

 "Zzz…"
