Work Text:
*prom night senior year*
He should have been out there on the dance floor. He should have been dressed in the tux his mom worked hard to get him for this particular night. He should have just stayed home, is what Izuku thought as he watched from the sidelines in casual formal clothes and suspenders as he tended the food and drink table. He should have known that in the end he would end up here again in this position. Always on the sidelines making sure others enjoy the night at every dance and sports game.
It's his senior prom and he's here, but not here at the same time. He sighed as yet another song played that struck him right in the gut reminding him he was graduating with no boyfriend. Him and Kacchan had a falling out 4 months ago.
It was after the football team lost their most important game of the year. Resulting in not making it to the playoffs. Kacchan blamed it on the fact that he had not been dedicating his time wisely enough and decided Izuku was distracting him. Izuku of course was very hurt.
Angry, confused, but definitely gutted to his core. He's always had love for Kacchan. Sure there was some rocky years in middle school but in the end Kacchan realized his feelings for the nerd and around sophomore year they started dating. Izuku was to the moon.
"Hey! Can I have some punch man? Dying of thrist here!" Izuku fumbled and apologized animately as he served Basketball team captain, Sero. "Hehe, calm down dude, I'm just yanking your chain. Hey, why you here serving drinks Midoriya? I thought you would have came with Bakugo?"
"Well you see-- Before he could even begin explaining Izuku had gone quiet. There at the prom archway entrance stood Kacchan, dressed to the nines in his expensive tux that was suppose to match with Izuku's. "Uh, hey Sero I think Mina is calling you!" Izuku pointed.
Sero turned but when he saw no one calling him he turned back only to find Izuku gone. Hidden in the dark behind some bleachers was Izuku, trying to regain himself. He wasn't sure what to do, from what he could remember hearing from Kiri, Kacchan wasn't going to attend the prom.
'What do I do?! My heart won't stop beating! It still hurts...' he grabbed at his hair trying to collect his emotions as a tears welled up. "Hey, Deku?" Izuku was startled by someone calling his name. He was sure no one would have paid him no mind.
He looked and was relieved it was only Ochako. "Oh, hey Ochako.." "I saw you run off, you okay?" "Honestly no, I just saw Kacchan walk in..." Ochako hummed, "Well if it makes you feel any better, it looks like he came alone" Izuku shook his head.
"No, I don't care about that...at least--I mean don't get me wrong, it would have hurt probably more, but..." "but you're still hurting" Ochako rubbed his back to comfort him. "Yeah, I just thought things would have been different I guess"
Izuku couldn't help but let his tears fall. "Hey now, don't let some jock ruin your night, after all you're still coming with us to the after party right?" Izuku nodded as he wiped his tears.
"Besides, I've seen the way Shoto's been looking at you tonight, I think you have an admirer" she teased as she tried to get her bestfriend to smile. Izuku giggled, "I think I'm swearing off all admirers for a long time, love hurts."
Ochako sighed, "Ain't that the truth! At least dance a few songs, Shoto's very polite and who knows maybe you two can become closer friends." Izuku thought on it as he looked out towards where Kacchan was currently.
He was surrounded by Kiri, Mina, Denki and a few other of his football peers. He didn't come for Izuku. He should have known. Kacchan has a dream in attending one of the top Universities on a football scholarship and not mention he graduated with honors.
In a way, he knows he can't really blame Kacchan for wanting to break up and concentrate on his future. Afterall, he has dreams of his own as well, he just the figured he would have Kacchan by his side and experience those wants and dreams together...with Kacchan. 'Kacchan..'
'Isn't that what love is supposed to be?' He thought to himself as he stared off watching Kacchan interact with his friends.
"You done sulking?" Ochako poked his cheek as she 'patiently' waited for him.
"Probably not, hehe but you're right, I need a distraction"
"Atta boy!"
