Work Text:
Sally Quinn-Blecher loved Trolleys. The two-year-old would tell anyone she met. And she was meeting a lot of new people.
“Trolley!” She shouted proudly, holding her toy trolley high above her head. She then ran over to the next cluster of people and did it again. One of Sally’s mothers was in hot pursuit of the toddler.
“Sally! Sally, get back here!” Zoe shouted as she chased after her daughter. She apologized profusely to every group of people her daughter had bothered. Fortunately Sally ran into a familiar face.
“Hey there kid. Where are your moms?” Rue bent down to meet Sally. The child held out her toy and ran it over Rue’s face.
“Trolley,” the toddler said like she was revealing a great secret of the universe.
“Sally. Sally!” Zoe caught up with her daughter and picked her up. “No, no, no. Sweetie, we don't put our toys on people's faces. I’m so sorry, Rue.”
Rue laughed it off. “It’s fine. And that's Councilwoman Bahia.” And the former magical girl did dress for it in a deep blue power suit. The only thing that was missing was a stash.
“Did they tell you all the government secrets yet?” Zoe teased her old friend.
Rue blushed a bit. But it was Will who answered. “I don’t think she’s high enough in the chain of command yet,” he joked.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Desperate to change the subject she asked, “Hey Zoe where did your wife run off to?”
As Kokoro fiddled with her tie she wondered if Undine and her was making a mistake. Should they have gone for the double dress wedding instead of the dress and tux?
No, they made the right choice. Kokoro was always more of a tux girl, she thought as she finished her bow tie.
There was a knock at the door. "Yo!"
Tessa walked in. "Hey," She said. Even after all these years away from the incidents, Tessa still felt awkward around her.
Her bride to be's maid of honor was here. What was going on? "Tess, is everything alright with Undine?"
"She's fine. I'm, ah, here for you." She pulled out a package wrapped in plain brown paper. Kokoro ripped it open.
It was a book. "You finished it."
"I thought you should have the first copy. It hits shelves next month."
'Who We Were' was the title. The book was a comprehensive history of magical girls from the fall to the last dream. Largely told from the perspective of the girls; with emphasis on their day to day lives. The cover was a collage of pictures of magical girls. Some before the dream, some from when they were active, and others after they aged out. The most prominent one was a picture of Team Alchemical taken just as they were starting junior high. It was the same one Undine had taped to her mirror. Kokoro had seen it many times. But the second largest picture was Team Spear. Her mom's Team Spear. It was one of the few promotional pictures the team took. Mingxing and Lana had already told Kokoro the hours Tessa had interviewed them. Even Cassidy and Team Flash made the cut too.
Tears ran down Kokoro’s face. "Damn it Tessa; I'm not even at the altar yet." She pulled Tessa in for a hug. After a brief hesitation, Tessa hugged her back. She was crying too.
It was during therapy that Tessa decided to become a historian. Magical Girls were people and they deserved to be remembered as such. They should be able to tell their story for themselves.
Undine always loved the beach. Well, the idea of the beach. Old books would describe how the ocean would meet the land. Now that the barrier and the monsters are gone, Undine now can see it herself. A marine biologist wasn’t a career she knew excited when she was a kid, let alone one she would have.
“Why the hell would they host their wedding all the way out here?” The reporter complained.
“Privacy?” The cameraman mused.
The two were outside of the beach resort Undine chose for her wedding. The palace was guarded so only invented guests could go in. They were hiding in the bushes, looking for a way to jump the fence without getting caught.
“Pfff, I made those two the celebrities that they are! The least that they could do for me is to let me film and broadcast their most private moment.” A jet of water hit her in the face.
Undine was standing there in her gorgeous and elaborate wedding dress, complete with a tiara with Lapis Lazulis, and holding a hose. “No. Press.” And she proceeded to soak the two.
Kokoro transitioned into the world of sports after her powers went away. Instead of boxing or wrestling, Kokoro made the move to baseball. There was some culture clash as outside the city sports were split by gender instead of weight class, which still seemed weird to Undine. So the mixed gendered sports league of the city didn’t mix well with the newly rediscovered international community. Kokoro popularity seemed to be key to bridging the gap. Even if all that stuff with Goops didn’t go down, Kokoro would still be famous. They’re wedding was destined to be a big deal it seemed.
Meanwhile the guests were being ushered to the chairs arranged on the beach. “I will say this,” Bud told Harley. “It is beautiful. Too bad about the humidity. I love Undine. I really do, but jeez this is awful.”
“Yeah,” Harley said. She was doing much worse in her suit than Bud’s dress. “And the sand. What is it anyway?”
“Tiny rocks. Like super tiny.”
Harley shook some out of her jacket. “And how do they get everywhere?”
“I’ll tell you when I find out. I didn’t sit down on anything and it’s already all up in my-”
“I will pay you money not to finish that sentence.”
Vedka came running up. “Bud, we’re having a bit of a make-up emergency,” she told the other maid of honor. “Kokoro’s and Tessa’s make-up are just absolutely ruined.”
“Damn it guys, at least what until we’re all up there. You get the make-up artists on it and tell the band to play some old Team Forte hits. Harley, keep Undine busy.”
The pits of her shirts were stained, and she was dumping a glass of water on her face. “She’s drowning the press. I’ll ask her to do it for me next.”
Once all of that was settled, the ceremony began. Kokoro stood next to Bud, Harley (still wet), and Vedika. On the other side stood Tessa, Zoe, and Rue. Little Sally was the flower girl, tossing bits of flowers everywhere. Undine came down the aisle and stood in front of Kokoro. She put her hands in hers and they said they’re vows. And they kissed for the first time as wife and wife.
