Work Text:

Jason only wanted to yell, he wasn’t interested in fighting today. Dick was convenient, Jason wasn’t actually mad at him, he was just around. It had been a long night, patrol was taxing, ending with Dick and Jason cleaning wounds in the closest safehouse.

“This is stupid, he got away! We should have caught that bastard!” Jason yelled, he and Dick were standing in the kitchen of the safehouse. Dick was making tea for the two of them, Jason was wrapping a cut across his arm. Dick stood next to Jason, placing a mug of tea in front of each of them.

“Tim and Damian got him, we weakened him and they caught him.” Dick reasoned, leaning heavily on the table to avoid putting too much weight on his knee. Jason turned fast in order to yell more clearly at his brother, but stopped short. Dick flinched. Dick flinched because Jason moved too fast towards him. Jason knew that response. He saw it in the kids over in Crime Alley, the children scorned by society. He saw it in the victims that she saves during patrols, the civilians whose partners get power sick. He saw it in Tim, Cass and Damian, the kids that Bruce took from hostile environments. He saw it in himself, the street rat that died by crowbar. Now he sees it in his older brother, the golden child who had perfect parents.

“I wasn’t going to–” Jason was cut off by his brother, now tense and a bit further from Jason than he was prior.

“I know.” Dick’s answer was quick, he was trying to dismiss the conversation. His shoulders were forcefully relaxed but his face was still tense.

“Dick,” Jason tread lightly, “Who was it?” He gently, slowly reached out to grab Dick’s shoulder, he was shaking.

“No one, Jay. It’s just from hero work.” Dick dismissed again, but he didn’t shove Jason’s hand off. It was quiet for a moment, Jason not wanting to push and Dick not wanting to spill, afraid that he would shatter, “Bruce.” Dick eventually choked out, trembling under Jason’s touch. The grip tightened.

“Training?” Jason asked softly, before pulling Dick into a hug. Dick broke down in his arms, quietly crying into his brother’s shoulder.

“Sometimes, sometimes he is just angry.” Dick whispers, muffled even more by Jason’s shoulder. Jason holds Dick tighter and guides them to sit on the floor, “It was the worst after… after you died.” Jason sees green for a moment but quickly shuts it down, he shushes Dick and lets his brother cry, making a mental note to yell at Bruce.
