Work Text:

Breaking up with Kenny was one of the hardest things Kara had ever done. They had been together since high school, and he was not only her boyfriend but also her best friend. She always thought they would be together forever, but when she realized she was attracted to women, everything changed. She couldn't be with Kenny while she figured out who she was, and it unfortunately broke Kenny's heart on the way.

She hid her attraction to women for years, until that waning feeling became overwhelming to the point of being unbearable. It had burst at all her seams, and Kara still didn't know what to do with it. the only certainty she had is that there was no more room for Kenny, not as he expected and deserved.

She was focused on the landscape outside, imagining herself in a clip, until a few stops later, something caught her eye. The most beautiful woman she had ever seen in her life got on the bus and Kara's life lost all meaning when the green eyes crinkled into a smile as she looked directly at Kara, as if she had known her forever.

The woman sat next to Kara and took a book with aged edges from an ecobag. Kara froze, her insides churning and her heart racing. And as the bus made its way to campus, Kara tried not to stare, but was obsessed with how the straight black locks escaped the woman's bun, framing her pointed chin, and how the square, thick-rimmed glasses slipped down her pointy nose.

Kara scolded herself in her thoughts. She had just left Kenny crying on the sidewalk outside her apartment building, and it was unfair to feel her fingers tingling, wanting to touch someone she didn't even know. The woman's skin gleamed white and satiny and Kara curled her trembling fingers into fists before her body betrayed her.

She tried to concentrate on the scenery passing by outside, but her mind and eyes kept returning to the woman sitting next to her. She didn't know why she felt that way, but she couldn't deny the twist in her stomach and the tension in every nerve. It was like every cell in her body was boiling, bubbling, and Kara could barely remember how to breathe.

Kara didn't know what to do. She had just broken up with Kenny and was still trying to figure out who she was. She didn't know if she was ready to explore her feelings for women, or even if she wanted to. But as she sat there next to that woman, everything felt very hazy, as if Kara had crossed over into a world she didn't know.

And she felt like a real idiot for it.

Reluctantly, she directed her gaze forward and focused on the crooked bolt resting on the bench in front of her. She inwardly scolded herself for fixating on the stunning stranger beside her. Was this how she intended to start her exploration of her attraction to women?

Casting a brief glance at the woman out of the corner of her eye, she exhaled a heavy sigh, frustrated with herself. "Stop it, Kara," she scolded herself. "Show poor Kenny some respect and stop acting crazy."

But she was so beautiful...

No! Kara possessed a much greater degree of self-discipline than that.

With that, Kara resolutely looked forward, relieved that she would probably never see that woman again. But when the bus pulled up to her stop and she stepped out into the warm spring air, she couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed inside her.

----------

Over the next week, despite her efforts, Kara couldn't get the woman out of her mind. With an embarrassed laugh, she named the stranger Morgana Le Fay, which would explain her enchantment with a complete stranger.

On Wednesday, Kara boarded the bus with her headphones on, listening to the soft voice of Mary Lambert singing "She Keeps Me Warm". As she sat down on one of the benches in the corner, she couldn't help but look at the empty seat next to her. The idea of meeting Lady Le Fay again seemed too coincidental for her liking, and Kara didn't believe in coincidences, let alone fate. With a resigned nod, she dove into her e-reader, which displayed her copy of "The Art of War," a book that Professor Grant had recommended to her for some reason Kara still didn't understand. How did this relate to writing? She would never comprehend what went on in that genius mind.

Kara was deeply absorbed in her reading, her mind spinning with the words on the page as she struggled to make sense of their meaning. Suddenly, a soft "hi" from beside her snapped her out of her concentration, making her jump in surprise and nearly drop her e-reader. She quickly glanced over, blinked, and looked again with wide blue eyes filled with surprise at the fascinating stranger from the week before. She couldn't help but feel a sudden rush of heat burning her cheeks as she sheepishly returned the greeting with a tiny and awkward "hey."

She quickly looked away from the woman and back to her book but couldn't resist sneaking a glance at her out of the corner of her eye. Her heart was pounding like a drum, and her body was responding in ways she couldn't explain. Kara shifted in her seat, hoping to hide her nervousness. Again. Fuck!

Despite her efforts to concentrate on reading, Kara found herself unable to focus on the words on the page. She was acutely aware of the woman beside her, her long fingers turning the pages of her book, her slender wrists speckled with tiny golden freckles, and her thin sweater and mayo falling over one delicate shoulder, exposing the lace strap of her purple bra. Kara could barely contain a sigh when Lady Le Fay tucked the loose ends behind her ear, covered with small silver hoops. Screw this! Kara was attracted, so what? Everyone falls in love on the bus every day; she wasn't the only unlucky one in the world.

When the bus hit a bump in the road, Kara's limp fingers couldn't catch her e-reader, and it flew off her lap, landing on the ground with a clatter. Mortified, she quickly reached down to retrieve it but was surprised to find that the woman beside her had already picked it up and was holding it out to her with a small smile.

"Thanks," Kara stammered, accepting the device, careful not to touch the woman's hand. The woman simply nodded and went back to her own book, leaving Kara to fumble with her e-reader and try to calm her racing heart and the stiffness in the back of her neck.

Kara took another glance at Lady Le Fay's profile. She had high cheekbones, a delicate, slightly curved nose, and full, rosy, completely kissable lips. Her brows were dark and thick, as sharp as her jaw. Just below it, there was a small scar, almost unnoticeable, and Kara wondered where she had gotten it. She wanted to know everything about her, to unravel every story, feeling, and secret hidden under that concentrated, placid posture, as if all her edges were well trimmed.

Still watching her, trying not to be too obvious, Kara admired the column of her long, elegant neck. She looked like a swan, a swan in a black wig, but a swan nonetheless. She blinked away the thought a few times and wrinkled her nose, realizing it was strange to think about licking a swan's neck, but she couldn't help but imagine running her tongue down the entire column of Lady Le Fay's throat.

Kara thought it was best to shift her focus and looked at her e-reader for a few seconds before discarding the idea of reading. There was no way she could concentrate on anything, except maybe the woman beside her.

Lady Le Fay's hands caught Kara's attention. They weren't small and delicate, as one would expect from someone of her stature. Instead, her fingers were long and broad, with blunt ends. Her nails were short, almond-shaped, painted black, and she wore a silver ring on her index finger. Kara tried to be inconspicuous as she watched the woman's hands turn the pages of her book, feeling her body respond to the vision. She crossed her legs, hoping to hide the stirring in her center.

Kara's thoughts began to wander as she imagined that index finger sporting an onyx stone, gliding smoothly across her skin, leaving a trail of goosebumps all along the way. What would it be like to have those fingers awakening every sensitive spot on her body, molding her like wet clay, eliciting sighs and moans from the depths of her soul? How would those fingers feel in her mouth? Inside it?

Kara closed her eyes tightly and shook her head, begging herself for some control. She tried to focus on her own book, but everything seemed opaque. It was as if her entire being was being taken over by the woman beside her. Her eyes were drawn like a magnet to Lady Le Fay, dazed and hungry.

Congratulations, Kara! Be weird until you get a series on Netflix.

Kara felt heat rising in her cheeks as she tried to quell her damn dirty mind. She felt like a pervert, but she couldn't help the way her body reacted to the woman beside her.

Every point of contact between them seemed amplified, growing and taking over everything inside her, from the soft wool of her clothes brushing Kara's bare arms to the press of the woman's thighs against hers. Kara was hyperaware of how her body was responding, and she found herself spreading her legs a little wider, trying to intensify the contact. Her body was sucked into it, like galaxies orbiting close to a black hole, about to swallow her whole. The fury of sensations was almost too much to bear, and she quickly crossed her legs again, feeling embarrassed and inadequate.

I need to buy a vibrator. Not one, two, maybe three or a Thousand!

Kara took a deep breath and looked down at the book again, at least pretending to read it as her mind kept wandering back to the woman beside her. Her mind raced as she tried to understand what was going on inside her. She could hardly believe she was acting like that in such a public place, still hands on a poor woman who had no idea what was going on. She wrinkled her nose, disgusted with herself. If it weren't so weird, she'd punch herself in the face. She was mortified, but she couldn't shake the feeling of arousal and desire that still lingered inside her.

Perfect! Kara despised herself. She broke up with Kenny to explore her sexuality and now looks like a horny teenager.

Kara wondered if the woman thought she had a fungus between her legs because she was constantly crossing and uncrossing them.

How can I convince her I'm clean as a bar of soap without looking like a complete weirdo?

Approaching the bus stop, Kara prepared to get off with all the finesse and delicacy of a civilized lady. She even smiled at Lady Le Fay, trying to keep up appearances. But as soon as the bus came to a stop, Kara took off with the speed of an arrow, slamming her hip into a bench bar and stumbling down a step.

Lady Le Fay must have thought her crazy, to say the least. Lady Le Fay, she muttered with self-disdain. She urgently needed to find out the name of that woman. This was getting ridiculous!

Cursing loudly, Kara stood in the middle of the campus, trying to break ground with her own feet, seething with rage and completely indifferent to the strange looks she received.

She needed a priest to exorcise any nymphomaniac spirit within her. She chuckled internally, imagining herself walking up the stairs backwards and spitting green goo at people, but then she got serious again. No, Kara! This is not funny! You can't rub up against strangers' legs like a dog in heat. It's invasive and disgusting. She couldn't even bring herself to talk to Alex about it, afraid he'd think she was a freak dazzled by a stranger.

"No," Kara decided, "she would just let it go.” Thoughts of her would go away like the bus that left a few minutes ago, and there was no way that was going to happen a third time. Right?"

----------

Kara boarded the bus and slumped into the nearest seat, feeling nauseous and exhausted. Her eyes burned, and her head throbbed as if it might explode. Leaning her head back against the headrest, she closed her eyes, hoping to find some relief.

Her week had been complete chaos.

Kenny had shown up at her apartment saying he missed her and begged her to date him again. He said he was willing to have an open relationship, so that Kara could explore her sexuality without shutting him out of her life.

It had been really hard, but Kara had to tell him that she was obsessed with a complete stranger she had only seen on the bus twice. She knew she sounded crazy saying that, but Kenny knew her well enough to tell she was serious.

Kara was usually a very rational person when it came to matters of attraction, so she couldn't understand why she would react so strongly to a stranger's bicolored eyes. She felt like she had no control over the overwhelming pull that took hold of her, leaving her soul torn apart without mercy.

It was a difficult conversation for Kara to have with Kenny. They both cried a lot when Kenny realized that there was no chance of them getting back together, but later he tried to comfort Kara, even offering to help her find the object of her passion. However, Kara couldn't do it. She didn't even know where to look. Lady Le Fay always got off at a stop in the middle of Kara's journey and stayed on the bus after Kara got off.

In the end, Kara knew she needed to try to forget about the stranger who made her a complete mess.

Despite her efforts to move on, Kara found herself thinking about Lady Le Fay every day, asleep or awake, and it felt silly and childish to obsess over a stranger in this way, but she couldn't help it.

After yet another restless night of sleep, Kara decided to look for practical answers and headed to the University's Department of Psychology, hoping to find some clarity. But when the receptionist asked if she could help her, Kara was speechless. Deep down, she wanted to confess her love for a stranger and beg for help to get over it, but her body didn't know how to put it into words, and she knew it would sound crazy.

Instead of saying something, she lied and said she was lost, then ran to the library to look for answers on her own. She spent hours in the library poring over articles and books. As an aspiring investigative journalist, she was determined to discover herself right then and there.

After several hours of reading, Kara came across studies that suggested love at first sight was a multifaceted experience. It was linked to both physiological arousal and psychological factors such as attraction and uncertainty. While it was comforting to know that such experiences were often fleeting, it was challenging to explain this to her restless heart, which continued to beat fast with every thought of the mystery woman she had met on the bus.

So there she was, in shambles inside the bus on yet another Wednesday.

Kara laid her head back on the bench and closed her eyes just for a few moments, just to rest her heavy lids a little, but she was enveloped by Morpheus before she even knew it.

In her dream, Kara floated above the city, wearing broom-patterned underwear and a hot pink fuzzy coat. She held her world in her arms and completely ignored the citizens who were being devoured by a giant cat in the city below. Lady Le Fay cupped Kara's face between her soft palms and leaned in, her mouth covered with Kara's favorite strawberry sauce. Kara closed her eyes and opened her mouth, ready to receive true love's kiss from the most beautiful woman she had ever seen. She took a deep breath, inhaling the scent of artificial strawberries, sugar, and desire. However, just as their lips were about to touch, the bus suddenly turned over, waking Kara up.

As Kara opened her eyes, she saw a beautiful cleavage in her line of vision. She saw a black bra peeking out from under an unbuttoned white Henley tank top. Embarrassed, she quickly lifted her head and pulled away from the stranger's shoulder where she had been resting moments before.

Lady Le Fay looked up at her with wide, majestic eyes behind her spectacles, her cheeks flushed. Oh, come on! Kara exclaimed inwardly, feeling a tight knot in her stomach and her heart racing. She closed her eyes and wished the ground would open up and swallow her whole. God, if you exist, please take me! she silently pleaded.

With her eyes still closed and her face flushed with embarrassment, Kara struggled to think of a way to salvage the situation. Should she try to strike up a conversation with Lady Le Fay? Apologize for falling asleep on her shoulder? Or just run off the bus as quickly as possible? In the end, her embarrassment got the better of her, and all Kara could do was mutter an apology before hastily gathering her things and fleeing the bus.

Kara's feet moved heavily, dragging along the sidewalk as if they carried the weight of the world. She was already close to college, but she knew she wouldn't be able to attend class and endure Professor Grant's humiliations.

A lump formed in her throat, restricting her breathing with every step. The tears that burned her face felt like tiny drops of lava, scorching her skin with each salty trail they left behind.

Three times. Three fucked times she had embarrassed herself in front of the same woman. The memory of their last encounter made her body shudder in mortification. She had buried her face in the woman's breasts without permission. Lady Le Fay must have thought she was a complete idiot.

This was wrong in so many ways that Kara nearly threw up right there on the sidewalk. She was so embarrassed that she considered never setting foot in the university again. No, that wasn't true. She liked to study and could easily get to the university on foot, by bike, on a skateboard, or even on horseback. Would her landlord let her keep a horse in the apartment? No, her building didn't accept any animals but her! Maybe she could buy roller skates and never work her legs out at the gym again.

After wiping away the tears that stung her cheeks, Kara walked into the first restaurant she came across and ordered an insane amount of food. She hoped eating would calm her nerves and was determined to keep chewing until she felt the food get stuck in her throat. If she was lucky, she thought, she might choke to death.

So, sitting in front of a colossal pile of pancakes, she thought about calling Alex. Her sister was practical and would probably commit her to a madhouse. Fuck the madhouse! I need comfort and someone to curse with me until my ears fall off.", However, as soon as she clicked on Alex's contact, she stopped, with a half-chewed strip of bacon in her mouth.

Three times Lady Le Fay had sat next to her on the bus, even when other seats were available. That had to mean something, right?

Kara reviewed each interaction with trembling hands, holding two forks. On the first day, Lady Le Fay smiled at Kara, and it wasn't a half-assed smile, no, it was a grin that showed even her wisdom teeth. It was a little strange to smile at a stranger like that, but it was that smile that made Kara fall in love. Then Lady Le Fay sat down next to Kara and said hello, a cute but still full hello.

On the second day, she again chose Kara as her traveling companion. Or would she be a companion for life? And she sat there, not moving away when Kara involuntarily tried to bypass the principle of the impenetrability of matter. What if she also wanted to merge and Kara didn't realize it because she was freaking out? It was a possibility, wasn't it? There was also the possibility that she was in shock and horror, but Kara was trying to be positive right now.

Then there was that third interaction, which happened a few minutes ago. Kara mentally calculated Lady Le Fay's starting point and her vanishing point. There were about ten minutes to go, during which Kara probably rested like an angel on the other woman's shoulder.

Kara stuffed half a pancake into her mouth, trying to fit it into her gigantic smile. Yes! There was a 0.2% chance that Lady Le Fay wanted her too, and Kara almost jumped for joy right then and there.

She walked home, feeling like she was floating on a cloud. She walked into her apartment, her mind completely consumed by possibilities and church bells. She absentmindedly tossed her clothes around the room before standing in front of the mirror, her heart racing and her eyes critical.

Her eyes were large, round, and glittering, and they were dilated as if she had just snorted cocaine, but partially hidden behind her glasses. She wondered if wearing contacts would make a difference.

Her eyebrows were a little too golden, but she couldn't change that. She bit her bottom lip and watched her mouth. Her upper lip was a little thin, but it was gloriously shaped and, combined with her pearly white teeth, made a perfect set. She imagined Lady Le Fay admiring her lips and wanting to kiss them as much as she wanted to kiss the other woman's full lips.

Kara continued her self-examination, admiring her strong, well-defined jaw and the naturally rosy cheekbones. Her skin wasn't bad either, with a few marks here and there, but Lady Le Fay smiled at it anyway, so it was perfect.

Her gaze dropped to her body, and she couldn't help but wonder if Lady Le Fay liked muscular women like her. She flexed her biceps in front of the mirror, and her muscles clenched tightly. She licked her lips, feeling like Peter Parker after being bitten by a spider. Not bad...

She had a slim waist and narrow hips, but they were still rounded enough to accentuate her feminine figure. Her abs were toned, with a trail of muscle that ran from top to bottom, highlighting her physique. And her long, thin, and well-shaped quadriceps completed her overall look.

Kara curled her fingers and looked down, deciding it wasn't that bad. Also, her hair was majestic; it looked like it was stolen from a cherub's head. There wasn't even a single split end. She was like an almost perfect fusion of Barbie and Max Steel.

Kara left the mirror, feeling confident enough to take the 0.2% chance.

----------

Kara spent the rest of the week in a good mood. She caught up on all of her late college work, gossiped over FaceTime with Alex, but didn't tell him about Lady Lefay or her plans. She didn't want Alex to feel sorry for her if things didn't work out. She also helped Kenny set up a Tinder profile and was delighted when he texted her that he had a date the following week with a woman named Siobhan.

In an effort to quell her growing anxiety, Kara spent overtime at the gym, sweating like a chicken, pushing her body to every possible limit.

On Monday, Professor Grant called Kara into her office. Kara freaked out momentarily because she wasn't sure what Professor Grant wanted to talk about. But Catherine offered her a smile, probably the first of her life, and Kara was stunned. She began by praising Kara's academic achievements, mentioning how impressed she was with her hard work and dedication. She then offered Kara an internship in the university's newsroom. And even when Kara impulsively hugged the narrow shoulders, accepting the opportunity, she didn't call the police.

On Tuesday, Kara indulged in a little self-care. She shaved her entire body, taking her time to make sure all the hair was removed, went to the manicurist, and asked for lesbian nails, and smeared her face with colored clay. She also bought new but casual clothes that Regina George would be jealous of.

Kara was fully prepared to maybe meet Lady Lefay the next day. She ate a salad for gas, took some melatonin to sleep like a billionaire who didn't have to work, and set seven alarms to make sure she woke up on time.

On Wednesday, as she boarded the bus, Kara felt her body tingling with anxiety. She placed her backpack next to her so that no one could take her future wife's seat and secured a highly visible seat for anyone getting on the bus. She would finally maybe ask Lady Le Fay out for coffee and hopefully learn her name. As the bus traveled its route, Kara snarled at a man and a pregnant woman who ogled the vacant space.

After fifteen long minutes of very anxious waiting, Lady Le Fay entered the bus, holding a book in her arms. Kara's stomach lurched and her fingers curled inside her new oxfords as she watched the woman walk down the hall. She immediately removed her backpack without the woman noticing, and Lady Le Fay sat down beside her. Kara's heart was pounding so hard she thought it might burst her arteries at any moment.

Kara opened her mouth to greet Lady Le Fay when, suddenly, her friend Nia, her friend since last semester, boarded the bus and interrupted her.

"Oh my God, Kara!" Nia exclaimed as she approached Kara. "I heard about you and Kenny breaking up! You guys had been together for ages! Are you okay? You know what they say, to get over one man, you just have to get over another one."

Kara's smile froze on her face as she tried to process the sudden change in conversation. She looked to the side, where Lady Le Fay already had her face buried in her book, and watched as every piece of herself crumbled away. She had spent so much time and effort preparing for this moment, only to have it ruined by an unexpected interruption. To her complete horror, Lady Le Fay rose from her seat a moment later and left the bus, leaving Kara with the remains of her heart in her hand.

No! She wasn't going to let the future mother of her five children get away like that.

She didn't even bother to answer Nia and ran to the exit of the bus. She wasn't that close to her dream for it to dematerialize because of a misunderstanding. She waited impatiently for the next stop and got off the bus, running to the spot where Lady Lefay had gotten off, but she couldn't find her. She asked the shopkeepers in the stores along the sidewalk if they had seen a woman fitting Lady Lefay's description, but no one had. It was as if the woman had disappeared into thin air.

Kara took a deep breath, trying to swallow the moon-sized lump in her throat. The weight of missed opportunity was crushing. She had spent nearly a month working up the courage to approach Lady Lefay, and now it was all gone down the drain because of one sentence, one goddamn sentence!

She refused to cry, even though her vision was clouded behind the contact lenses. The weight on her chest felt like an anvil, crushing her mercilessly, but she couldn't let herself break. She needed to talk to someone, vent her frustration and disappointment, and then think rationally.

Kara took out her phone and called Alex, begging to see her. She needed her sister's comforting presence and reassurance that everything would be okay. She quickly texted Professor Grant that she nearly died and went home to lick her wounds while she waited for Alex to drive the two hours from Baltimore to Philadelphia.

Alex listened patiently as Kara dumped all the leftover crumbs of her heart in front of her. She listened to every detail, every thought (well, not all), and every chance Kara missed by behaving like an asshole. She tried to comfort her by saying that Lady Lefay would probably be on the bus next week.

But that didn't happen.

Weeks turned into months, and still Lady Le Fay was nowhere to be seen. Kara looked for her every time she got on the bus, but it seemed like she never existed. The sun rose and set, and life went on, but Kara felt like a bird with clipped wings. She couldn't get rid of the memory of Lady Le Fay's radiant smile, her silky hair, her toes, and bicolored eyes, but it was like she was just a figment of her imagination.

Kara tried to convince herself that it was time to move on. She could not go on regretting something that was never supposed to happen. But that was easier said than done. The thought of Lady Le Fay lingered in Kara's mind like a sweet melody that wouldn't leave her head.

Despite her heartache, Kara's life did have some bright sides. Her internship went well, and Professor Grant sometimes even called her by her name, Kara. She got back on speaking terms with Nia and even made new friends. Siobhan was a sweetheart and the perfect companion for Kenny. But even as Kara laughed and joked with her friends, she couldn't help but feel like a piece of her was missing. At night, when she turned off the lights and lay alone in her bed, she thought of Lady Le Fay. She wondered about her real name and where she might be.

Maybe she really was just a fairytale character, trapped in the pages of a fable that would never be told again.

---------

It was a chilly fall afternoon when Kara Danvers received a call from Cat Grant, summoning her to her office. As soon as she walked in, she was greeted with the sight of Cat perched on her chair, her eyes poring over a document intently.

"There has been progress in the development of a new immunotherapy for the treatment of cancer. Cancer Immunology academics are largely responsible for this. Look for Jack Spheer at Richards Labs and write a paper about it. I want it published in two days," Cat ordered, without even taking her eyes off the document. "You don't have all day, Kara. Now get out of my office!"

Kara immediately left the office, grateful that Cat had at least offered complete information this time. She tried to schedule an appointment with the university's research department but was told the first appointment would be available in two weeks. Realizing the importance of the article, Kara decided to take matters into her own hands.

Richards Medical Research Laboratories was just a few minutes from the Annenberg School for Communication, where Kara worked. As she walked toward the building, the cool autumn air enveloped her, making her shiver. She arrived at the entrance and was met by an ass-mouthed secretary.

"I'm sorry, miss. You can't just come in here," the woman said, her face stern. "Do you have an appointment?" Kara explained that she was at Catherine's behest, but that didn't mean much in the Cancer Biology department. The secretary was reluctant, but called Jack Spheer after Kara threatened to cry and bribed her with a false promise to meet Bruce Wayne as if Kara knows such a man. She made a mental note to buy the poor woman a muffin later.

Jack Spheer was a much younger man than Kara thought, with dark Oriental features, a thick British accent, and lots of hair gel.

Kara introduced herself and thanked him for his minutes. After informing her of the details of the research, Jack confided that the real mind behind that discovery was Lena Luthor, her research partner.

"Where can I find her?" Kara asked, turning off the recorder. Jack glanced at his watch and furrowed his thick brows.

"At this time, she's probably on her way home. If you can't find her in her office, you can run to the bus stop at 38th Street and Spruce Street. She likes to hang out with the commoners." He smirked at Kara. "Look for someone with a long skull scarf, black hair, glasses and hideous high heels, you can't go wrong.", Jack said with a smirk.

Kara smiled, grateful for the information, gathered her belongings and ran quickly to the indicated point, tripping over her own feet when she saw her.

Lady Le Fay was sitting at the end of the bench, lost in her own world, her face buried in an open book and wearing the world's ugliest shoe.

Kara's poor heart sprang to life again, beating vigorously, as if she had just come into the world making Kara's chest ache. She approached carefully, afraid the woman would disappear into thin air if she was too hasty. Her legs shook like dry bamboo as she closed the distance between them. She didn't dare even blink, afraid this was all just a dream.

"Lena?" Kara called softly, carefully. Please remember me! Lena's eyes doubled in size and her jaw dropped when she recognized Kara. A gigantic smile spread across Kara's cheeks, and she walked over, wiping her sweaty hand on her pants before reaching out with trembling fingers for her. "I'm Kara Danvers, pupil of Catherine Grant, the chief editor of the Uppen newspaper." She knew her voice was shaking, but who could blame her? "I'm writing about the new treatment you've developed. Jack said you could help me. Can I have a minute?" She blurted out at once, before going mute and starting to stutter like an idiot.

Lena looked at Kara's outstretched hand and face with a flush that crept over her cheeks and down her neck and down very deep. Kara's smile started to tremble around the edges, and her hand felt heavy with the passing seconds.

"Sure, I'll be happy to help." She responded by squeezing the outstretched hand. And it was like the explosion that formed the world, Kara's entire existence began to make sense.

As they walked side by side towards the cafe Kara had suggested, Lena turned to her and smiled. "I hope you managed to finish your book," she said, that wide smile showing down to her wisdom teeth.

"Yes, I did," Kara replied, her voice tight, feeling all the certainties in the universe.

As they continued walking, her hands brushed against each other. Kara felt a wave of magnetism run through her body, and she knew Lena felt it too. They both knew that the moment their fingers intertwined, they would never be able to let go.
