Pain & Love

Summary:

Minerva and Poppy have recently become a couple.

But Poppy still holds onto the memories of being bullied by Minerva back when they were students at Hogwarts

Work Text:

It had been a few months since Minerva McGonagall, the Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts, and Poppy Pomfrey, the school's matron, had started dating. Though they had been classmates in their youth, they had only recently reconnected and fallen in love. It was a surprising turn of events for both of them, but they were happy to be together nonetheless.

However, there was still one issue that hung over them: the fact that Minerva had bullied Poppy during their time as students at Hogwarts. Poppy had never forgotten it, and it had left a deep wound that had yet to fully heal.

One day, as they sat in the staff room, Minerva brought up the subject of bullying among students and that's when Poppy spoke up. "It's such a terrible thing," she said, her voice low and serious. "I remember what it was like to be bullied myself."

Minerva looked at her, sensing the tension in her words. "Poppy," she said gently, "I'm so sorry for what I did to you all those years ago. I wish I could go back and change it."

Poppy's eyes narrowed. "Do you?" she asked. "Do you really mean that?"

Minerva nodded, her eyes downcast. "Yes, I do. I was young and foolish back then, and I regret it deeply."

Poppy didn't say anything for a moment, and Minerva felt a cold knot forming in her stomach. Finally, Poppy spoke again, her voice still quiet but firm. "You don't understand, Minerva. It wasn't just some harmless teasing. You physically and emotionally bullied me for years. You made my life a living hell."

Minerva felt her heart sinking as the memories flooded back. She remembered how she and her friends had picked on Poppy, mocking her for her looks and her background. They had tripped her in the hallways, stolen her books, and spread rumors about her. She had never realized just how much it had hurt Poppy until now.

Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, and she struggled to hold them back. "Poppy," she whispered, "I'm so sorry. I had no idea how much I was hurting you."

Poppy shook her head, her expression unreadable. "It's too late for apologies, Minerva. You can't take back what you did."

The rest of the staff room was silent, watching the two women with varying degrees of discomfort. Finally, Poppy stood up, her voice shaking slightly. "I need some air," she said, before leaving the room.

Minerva was left alone, her heart heavy with guilt and regret. She knew that she had hurt Poppy deeply, and that it would take more than a few apologies to make things right. But she was determined to try, to make amends for the pain she had caused.

Later that night, she went to Poppy's office, hoping to talk to her. She found Poppy sitting at her desk, staring at a photo of herself as a young girl.

"Poppy," Minerva said softly, "I know I hurt you. I can't change the past, but I want to make things right. Please, give me a chance to show you that I'm not that person anymore."

Poppy looked up at her, her eyes cold and distant. "How can I trust you, Minerva? How do I know you won't hurt me again?"

Minerva swallowed hard, her heart racing. "I can only promise you that I will try my best," she said. "I love you, Poppy. I don't want to lose you."

For a long moment, Poppy didn't say anything. Then, slowly she stood up from her desk and walked over to Minerva. She looked into her eyes, searching for something.

"I want to believe you, Minerva," she said softly. "I want to believe that you've changed. But it's not going to be easy."

Minerva nodded, understanding the weight of what Poppy was saying. "I know," she said. "But I'm willing to do whatever it takes."

Poppy looked at her for a moment longer, and then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around Minerva's waist. Minerva felt her body relax into the embrace, feeling a mixture of relief and gratitude.

They stayed like that for a few moments, just holding each other. Then, Poppy pulled back slightly, her eyes searching Minerva's face.

"I need time, Minerva," she said. "Time to heal, time to forgive. Can you give me that?"

Minerva nodded, feeling a lump forming in her throat. "Of course," she said. "I'll give you all the time you need."

Poppy smiled faintly, and then leaned in to kiss Minerva on the cheek. "Thank you," she said. "I appreciate it more than you know."

Over the next few weeks, Minerva and Poppy slowly began to rebuild their relationship. They started spending more time together, going for walks around the castle or sitting in Poppy's office, talking about anything and everything.

At first, it was awkward and tense. Poppy still held a lot of resentment towards Minerva, and Minerva was still struggling with the guilt of what she had done. But gradually, they started to find a rhythm, a way of being together that felt comfortable and natural.

One evening, they were sitting in the staff room, watching the fire crackle in the hearth. Poppy had her head on Minerva's shoulder, and Minerva was idly stroking her hair.

"I'm sorry, Poppy," Minerva said suddenly, breaking the silence. "I'm sorry for what I did to you. I don't know how to make it right, but I'm trying."

Poppy lifted her head and looked at Minerva. "I know you are," she said. "And I appreciate it. But there's something I need to tell you."

Minerva's heart sank. She had a feeling she knew what was coming.

"When you brought up the bullying in the staff room the other day," Poppy continued, "it really upset me. I didn't mean to hurt you, but I needed to let you know how much it still affects me."

Minerva felt a lump forming in her throat. "I know," she said. "And I'm sorry I reacted the way I did. I just...it's still hard for me to hear about it. I'm ashamed of what I did, and I hate that it still defines me in your eyes."

Poppy took Minerva's hand in hers. "I don't want it to define you, Minerva," she said. "I want to see the person you are now, the person who loves me and cares for me. But I can't forget what happened. I can't just brush it under the rug."

"I understand," Minerva said softly. "And I don't expect you to forget. All I can do is try to make it up to you, every day. And hope that someday, you can forgive me."

Poppy smiled at her, a small but genuine smile. "I think I already have," she said. "It's not easy, but I'm trying. And I think that's a good start."

As they sat in silence, Minerva felt a wave of emotions wash over her. She felt grateful that Poppy was giving her a chance, but at the same time, she felt the weight of her past mistakes. She knew that she could never fully make up for what she had done to Poppy, but she was determined to try.

Suddenly, Poppy broke the silence. "You know," she said, "I never would have thought we'd end up together like this."

Minerva looked at her, surprised. "What do you mean?"

"Well," Poppy said, "after everything that happened between us at Hogwarts, I never thought we'd be able to put it behind us. And then, when we both started working at Hogwarts, we barely spoke to each other. It's funny how things work out."

Minerva nodded, feeling a sense of wonder at how their paths had crossed again after all these years. "It is," she said. "And I'm so grateful that we've been given this chance to be together."

Poppy leaned in and kissed her, and Minerva felt her heart swell with love for this woman who had somehow managed to forgive her despite everything.

Over the next few months, their relationship continued to grow and strengthen. They went on walks around the castle, shared meals in the Great Hall, and spent countless hours talking in Minerva's office. Minerva felt like she was falling in love all over again.

But despite how happy she was, Minerva still felt a sense of guilt and shame whenever Poppy brought up the past. One evening, they were sitting in Minerva's office, and Poppy started telling a story about her time at Hogwarts. As she spoke, Minerva felt a knot forming in her stomach.

"And then," Poppy said, "you hexed me and I spent the whole night in the hospital wing."

Minerva felt her heart sink as the memories flooded back. She had forgotten how cruel she had been, how she had taken out her own pain and anger on Poppy.

"I'm sorry," Minerva said, her voice shaking. "I'm so sorry for what I did to you. I wish I could take it all back."

Poppy looked at her with a mixture of sadness and understanding. "I know you do," she said. "And I believe you. But it's still hard for me to think about it sometimes. It brings up a lot of painful memories."

Minerva nodded, feeling tears welling up in her eyes. "I understand," she said. "And I'll try to be better. I'll try to make it up to you every day for the rest of my life."

Poppy reached out and took Minerva's hand in hers. "I know you will," she said. "And that's why I love you."

Minerva felt a surge of emotion as she looked into Poppy's eyes. She knew that she would never fully make up for what she had done to Poppy, but she was determined to spend the rest of her life trying.

As they sat there in Minerva's office, holding hands and talking, Minerva knew that she had finally found her true love. And she was never going to let her go
