Family Affair

Summary:

Scout and Miss Pauling's son goes out for lunch with his grown-up daughter.

Notes:

This drabble is a sequel to four others I wrote either around or after my birthday. I wrote the first one ("Gone But Not Forgotten") the day after I turned 22, I wrote the second ("Legacy") just five days before my 25th birthday, I wrote the third ("Orphan") six days before my 26th birthday, and I wrote "The End Is The Beginning Is The End" six days before I turned 27. Now I've written this one four days before I turn 28.

Work Text:

Even after everything you and your father went through, you still have fond memories of him. True, he hasn't been quite the same since your mother died, but he's moved on with his life as best as he could, and he's got many great things going for him. He's got you to turn to during life's ups and downs. Sure, you yourself don't really need him much anymore, but at least you know you have someone you can talk to on even your lowest days.

You two are the only things you have. Everyone in his family either exists in the past tense or has just lost touch with him. It can certainly be upsetting when you lose the connection you once had with a family member, but it's just a fact of life. Sometimes, people just grow apart, and that's okay. It's nobody's fault. You can only hope there will never come a point in your life where you and your father grow apart and stop seeing each other.

Don't worry, though. You won't have to worry about something like that happening for a long time. Life is too short to get hung up on what the future might bring. You certainly don't need to be worrying about the future while you and your father are going out for lunch at Panera Bread. You both order your usual items: he gets the Broccoli Cheddar Mac & Cheese and you get the Pepperoni Flatbread Pizza. You both get the unsweet iced tea. You both sit down at a table and start talking about the going-ons in your life.

"So... how's your partner?" your father asks you.

"Great," you reply. "They're thinking about coming down here to visit at some point."

"Really? How exciting."

You laugh and nod. "Yep."

You continue to talk. You both practice gratitude that you're alive on a day like this. You both celebrate the fact that you yourself are alive on a day like this. Human life truly is miraculous, as the odds of someone being born at all are extremely rare. Both of you are the lucky ones.
