Work Text:
"Mum, I'm tired."
Bluey said with a sigh, looking boredly out the window.
The Heelers had driven around to different places today, and run several errands. From taking Bingo's bent shoes to a shoemaker, to visiting the eye doctor and buying groceries, they had been all over the city.
Chilli took a look back at the girls.
"Don't worry, this'll be our last stop before we go home. And trust me, it'll be fun."
Bluey slightly rolled her eyes.
"Well, dad said the computer repair shop would be fun, and it wasn't at all!"
Chilli gave Bandit a sly look.
"Did you really tell them that?"
"Well it was fun to me." He replied, chuckling.
"Oh, you cheeky dog." She grinned.
"Where are we going, anyways?" Asked Bingo.
"It's a surprise." Chilli whispered.
"Not really–we're here!" Bandit proclaimed.
With a turn, the Heelers parked in front of a shopping strip.
"Well girls, here we are."
As they got out of the car, Bluey and Bingo's eyes widened. In between the Ghoti fishing gear store and the Musique record store, stood a small but colorful shop.
"A costume shop!" The girls shouted, squealing in excitement.
*This fanfic of Bluey is called: Costumes *
Bandit grunted as he got out of the car.
Huff "Could you drive on the way home?"
"Sure thing, big guy." Chilli answered.
"I'll catch up with you in a bit, I'll get something fast from the record shop." Bandit said, heading into the store.
"Ok dad." Bluey replied, not even hearing what he said, as she looked all over the displays through the windows.
Chilli stood in front of the door, the girls right behind her. She turned around to face them.
"Alright girls, you may each choose one new costume. You can use it on Halloween, or use it while playing games. Just one though, and be very careful to not break anything while in there."
"Ok mum, I promise to be very careful." Bluey calmly replied.
Bingo nodded. "Yeah, me too."
As the Heelers walked in, they were amazed by what they saw.
The shop was full of bright colorful costumes, in all shapes and sizes. The walls were plastered with posters and drawings of various pop culture characters. The room was much bigger on the inside than they expected, with rows and rows of costumes.
Monster suits on one row, superheroes on the next, videogame characters on the one behind it, and so on. The left wall had countless little accessories and costume parts hanging on it, while the right wall faced a family of mannequins in various outfits. At the back there was a large mirror and an array of changing rooms.
"G'day mates." Welcomed the salesman. And the trance was broken.
"Hi Mr. Salesman." Said Bluey, waving at him.
"Good day." Said Chilli.
"Are you looking for something specific?"
"Oh, no, we are just browsing."
"Alright then! Let me know if you need anything." The seller cheerfully replied.
Bluey looked around, in awe at the sheer number and diversity of the different costumes. A small bat costume quickly caught her eye.
"Come on Bingo!" She loudly told her sister, before taking off and running towards it. Bingo followed closely behind.
"Hey! No running." Chilli sternly stared at the girls.
"Ok, sorry mum." Bluey and Bingo then proceeded to speedwalk towards the suit, to Chilli's dismay.
Upon reaching the desired suit, Bluey gasped in awe at its lifelike appearance. It was just her size, too.
“It’s perfect!” She excitedly howled.
Bingo began rubbing one of its wings. “It’s so soft and furry. And way more bat-like than last year’s.”
“Last year’s was a vampire, not a bat, though I did only choose it because it was the closest to a fruitbat. But here, this is straight up a bat costume. I want it!”
Chilli finally caught up with them while walking carefully between the rows.
“Are you sure it’s the one you want? Remember, you can only get one, so you better choose right.”
Bluey stood pensively for a few seconds, pondering her decision. Suddenly, she spoke up.
“Yep!” She happily said.
Her mum looked at her, with a rather unconvinced face.
“Well, just in case, let’s look around more, to see if you’ll find something else that interests you.”
“Ok.” Bluey nodded.
The shopkeeper looked on as the Heelers moved in between the rows, browsing all the different suits and accessories that were available.
Bingo wasn’t interested in most of the superhero and character costumes, but was stoked at the sight of all the different work outfits. They passed by an astronaut suit, soldier gear, a ballerina dress, and an engineer uniform, with Bingo stopping to check them out each time. She didn’t choose any of them though.
“Do you have an idea of what you want?” Asked Chilli.
“Hmm, not yet.” Replied the little red heeler.
A few rows later, Bingo finally had an answer.
“I want a ghost costume!” She quietly shouted.
“Uh, Bingo you already have a ghost costume at home; it’s what you wore last Halloween.”
“Oh. In that case, I want a doctor suit!”
“There we go!” Chilli proudly told her.
Looking back at the previous rows, the Heelers locked their eyes on a suit they passed a few minutes ago, and headed towards it.
“Here we go!” Bingo boasted. “This will be quite the upgrate on our old stethoscope.”
“Um Bingo, it’s pronounced ‘upgrade’.” Her mum corrected.
“I thought it was pronounced ‘update’.” Bluey inquired.
“Yeah, me too.”
Chilli looked at them in confusion. “Alright, we’ll deal with this later. For now, is that the costume you want, Bingo?”
“Yep, definitely!” She proclaimed.
“Uh huh. Bluey, are you sure you want the bat suit?”
The blue heeler stopped to think. “I want to keep browsing for a bit, before choosing.”
“Alright then.”
Chilli noticed an archeologist’s suit a few rows away.
(Ooh, this’ll be a nice surprise for Bandit next Halloween.) She thought.
“Girls, I’m gonna go check out a suit for me. Be careful and don’t touch anything you could break.”
“Ok mum.” Bluey and Bingo said in unison.
Chilli walked towards the suit. (Heh, I can dress up like an archeologist, while he uses his security guard outfit. What a switcheroo.) She imagined, snickering.
The girls walked around a bit more, until they reached the end, finding a table full of accessories for other costumes.
“Hey look Bingo, a crystal ball.”
“Wow, it’s so smooth and shiny.”
“Yeah!” Bluey said, picking up the ball from the table it was on. Huff “It’s kind of heavy though. Maybe mum could use it when wearing a seer costume.”
“Yeah, she could see the future with it and tell us when dad will travel again, so we can prepare a surprise for him.”
“Or we could play witches, or spies, or even mind reading! Let’s ask mum if we can buy it.”
“But Bluey, mama told us that we could only get one thing each, and we’re both already getting our costumes.”
“Oh, yeah. Hmm. Could you get this ball instead of your doctor suit, pleeeeaaase?” Bluey asked while posing a very cute face. As a fellow toddler though, Bingo was immune to her cuteness.
“No way, you put back your bat costume!” Bingo declared.
“No way!” Bluey crossed her arms.
“Then what are we gonna do?”
“Hmm, I know. Let’s go to mum and ask her if we can get it. We’re gonna need our strongest ‘please’ face yet though, so be prepared.”
“Alright.”
The girls pulled their ears back, widened their eyes, and put their hands in a begging pose, before walking over to their mom.
“Awww.” The shopkeeper cooed.
“Shhh.” Bluey said, breaking her stance.
The seller realized what they were planning and closed his mouth. (Go on then.) He thought.
The two heelers walked right next to Chilli, before asking in unison:
“Could we get a third thing here? We promise we’ll share it.”
Chilli tried holding out and denying them, but the cuteness eventually became unbearable.
“Ok, you got me. What do you want to get?”
“Come on, you’ll see.” Bluey said.
The three heelers went to the table in the back.
“Here it is mum, a crystal ball!” Bluey exclaimed.
Chilli took a close look at the price tag.
“Sorry girls, but this is a bit too pricey for what we came to get. Look around though, I’m sure you’ll find something interesting.”
“Ok, thanks mum.” Bluey replied, with Bingo nodding.
Chilli headed back to the adult size costumes. Bandit finally entered the store, carrying a vinyl record with him.
“Hey babe, how ya goin’?” He said, walking towards her.
“All good, thanks.” She replied, quickly hiding the archaeologist suit. “Just looking around. Could you check on the girls for me, they’re in the back.”
“Sounds good.”
Meanwhile, at the accessory table.
“Hey look Bingo, a thief’s mask.”
“Oh cool, try it on!”
Bluey put it on, to a look of confusion on her sister’s face.
“Hmm, you look very familiar.” She said.
Bluey looked in the large mirror on the wall beside them.
“Hmm, I do. I wonder who I’m thinking of.”
“IT’S DAD!” Bandit shouted, surprising them with a hug.
“Oh, hi dad.” Bingo said laughing.
“Dad! That’s who I look like!” Bluey declared.
“Huh, you really do.” Bandit said, mildly embarrassed.
Bingo suddenly gasped in realization.
“Oh my goodness. Is that why your parents named you Bandit?” She screamed in shock.
Bandit held the back of his head and blushed a little. “Yeah, it is.”
Bluey and Bingo erupted into laughter after hearing this.
After discretely purchasing her suit and storing it in the car, Chilli walked back to the store, only to be met with a booming, and slightly contagious laughter. Chuckling, she headed over to the rest of the family.
“What’s all the commotion about?” Chilli asked, giggling.
“MUM! We just found out why dad’s parents named him Bandit! It’s because his face’s pattern looks like a bandit!”
Chilli burst out laughing, and seeing Bandit’s reaction to them only caused her to get louder.
“Ha ha.” Bandit said with a snarky tone. “Well, if you only got that now, you’ll never figure out why we named Bluey, Bluey.”
“Why did you name Bluey, Bluey?” Asked Bingo.
The rest of the family couldn’t help but laugh even harder at this development.
“It’s because she’s BLUE!” Chilli blurted out between wheezes.
“Ohhh.” Bingo exclaimed before joining her family in their laughter.
Eventually, they all calmed down, and bought the bat costume, the doctor suit, and the bandit mask.
While the girls were distracted at the checkout, Bandit told Chilli: “Thinking about it, we dodged a bullet with Bingo not being interested in any animal onesies.”
“Oh my, I hadn’t thought of that possibility.”
“What if she wears Bluey’s fruitbat suit though?”
Chilli thought for a few seconds. “... we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. She doesn’t fit anyways.” She replied.
“Alright then. Man do I have a surprise for you when we get home.” He said, looking down at his record. “You’re gonna love this.”
“I have a surprise for you too, but you’ll have to wait a bit for it.”
“Ho ho ho.” He laughed. “I’m all for one.”
Chilli chuckled to herself. (This’ll be the best Halloween ever) She thought.
