And I Would Rather Be the Stray (Than Be Nothing To No One At All)

Summary:

POV of Bianca, Yoko, and Divina noticing the dynamic shifting between Wednesday and Enid.

The day to day routine for Wednesday and Enid was, after a good amount of repetition, perfect for the two of them. From waking up to falling asleep everything would move like gears in a well oiled machine and this was exactly the way Wednesday preferred it. Enid? Not so much. Of course she went along with it and was pleased to see her roommate adjusting times slowly to find what worked for them both instead of rushing Enid through things. It was like a dance they did, choreographed and rehearsed to perfection. To anyone that did not speak to them daily it would appear that the two were simply in sync, however, their friends that saw them in all of their shared classes and sat with them during meals seemed to sense something more than being in sync.

Notes:

Everyone does these 5+1 things but I don't have enough brain juice for that so we are here instead! Wee!

Bianca

When Wednesday decided to join for the weekend activities in Jericho no one batted an eye as they had been waiting for the day she finally caved to Enid’s pleading and puppy eyes. They did not react when she took the seat next to the exuberant blonde, booting Yoko from her regular spot, nor did they react when she pitched into the conversation. No. It wasn’t until they had reached The Weathervane that the group (consisting of Yoko, Divina, and Bianca) was left somewhat awestruck at the actions of the young Addams.

“Enid,” Bianca said slowly and hushed, “in what universe does Wednesday Addams pull your chair out for you and take your coat somehow in the same motion? And why do you look like you’ve done it a thousand times?”

“Oh, she does it everyday when we get back to the dorm after classes. Just a habit I guess.”

And for a second Bianca wanted to respond, she really did want to, but she was cut short by hearing Enid’s coffee order being placed not even ten feet from their table.

“Hello, Earth to Bianca.” Enid said with a giggle as she pulled her phone from her pocket and started scrolling whatever social media had grabbed her attention in that second.

Bianca shook her head and glanced over at Wednesday who was now waiting by the counter to pick up the drinks she had ordered.

“When did Wednesday ever learn your coffee order?” Yoko asked quietly so as to not bring too much attention to the question.

“Probably when we ditched last month and I ordered it? She’s got a very good memory, it's honestly scary.” Enid replied without looking up from her phone.

Everyone in the group just shook off the situation and went about trying to make plans for their day in town. When Wednesday returned to the table she placed Enid’s drink in front of her and conversation moved forward. Bianca looked between the two, locking eyes with the gothy teen in front of her as a small smirk slid onto her features.

“So Wednesday, only buying for Enid today?” Bianca’s tone was light and teasing which Wednesday seemed to recognize better now than she had the prior year.

“I only know her order and my own otherwise I would have been more than willing to purchase every one of your disgustingly sweet beverages.” She took a sip of her coffee and seemed to release tension as the bitter drink flooded her mouth.

One by one the group started to get up and order their drinks and whatever pastries or sandwiches and eventually they all found themselves ready to move on. Enid reached for Wednesday's glass and her own and took them up to the counter, coming back only to put her coat back on before heading back to the line. Wednesday followed suit, only taking her hands from her coat pockets to hand her card to the cashier and surprising Bianca who seemed to be the only one that noticed the interaction.

As the day carried on Bianca would occasionally find herself looking over to Enid and Wednesday to see that Wednesday was pulling Enid out of the way of puddles and poles while the girl typed out text messages or that Enid was whispering something to Wednesday while showing her phone to the girl. Like friends? But something more.

As the day in town came to a close the group wandered to where they were meant to catch the bus back only to find a black SUV with tinted windows awaiting them.

“I had my father send a car.” Was all they got in explanation before they were ushered in and sat comfortably for their ride back to Nevermore Academy.

Upon their arrival everyone went their separate ways with set plans to hangout the following day in order to begin making their plans for the holiday break that was only two months out. As soon as Enid and Wednesday had parted from the group Bianca turned to Yoko with an eyebrow raised.

“You know something.”

“Indeed I do but me and my super totally hot girlfriend have a night in planned and I’ve been sworn to secrecy.”

Yoko threw a wink over her shoulder as she walked away with Divina in tow. The rest of the group had already made their exit and gone in separate directions leaving Bianca on her own. A heavy sigh and a shrug later she makes her way back to her dorm.

Yoko

“Hurry uuupppp why are you so slow it’s fucking cold dude!”

Enid rubbed her eyes as she locked her phone and slipped out of Wednesday’s bed, a whine escaping the girl at the lack of warmth. She pushed her feet into her slippers and pulled a hoodie over her head before unlocking her phone and shooting out a quick response.

“It isn’t my fault that you made Divina upset with you, stop being pushy.”

“Why are you leaving?” Wednesday’s voice carries vulnerability in her half awake state.

“Yoko has to sleep in my bed tonight, she pissed Divina off and almost got siren songed into eating a jar of minced garlic.”

She reaches for the lock and twists it, opening the door and revealing a tired Yoko carrying her pillow and wearing her blanket as a cloak.

“You coulda used my bedding, it can only allegedly kill Wednesday because of the colors.”

“I thought you might be needing it? I came fully prepared to sleep on your balcony if Wednesday wasn’t going to let me crash inside.”

“No way dude, go lay down in my bed. You’re just going to have to not tell anyone about anything you see happen in this dorm room and blah blah blah the same thing you get every time.”

Enid stifles a yawn and shuts and locks their door before heading over to the bathroom. As the door clicks shut Yoko hears the rustling of covers and looks over to see Wednesday sitting up and rubbing at her eyes.

“Sorry Wednesday, I didn’t mean to wake you up, honestly I would have gone somewhere else but Enid responded first.”

Wednesday sends a tired glare at the vampire before standing from the bed herself and pulling a sweater from her closet. Yoko notices that she’s in a set of pajama pants that look like a darker version of Enid’s and smiles internally, not willing to take the chance of a knife in her chest at four in the morning.

“Enid has a hard time falling back asleep when she’s woken in the middle of the night and the easiest way to get her wolf brain to calm down is with music.”

Wednesday pulls on a black beanie that appears to be handmade and snaps her fingers once alerting Thing to her need for assistance. The hand crawls out of the pile of stuffed animals sitting on Enid’s side of the room and hops up onto Wednesday’s desk, “Enid will need help falling asleep, grab whatever one of those vile things from that pile makes her happiest.Please.”

Thing hops down and does as Wednesday says as the girl goes over to the balcony window and tugs her cello behind her. Enid emerges from the bathroom and kicks her slippers off at the edge of Wednesday’s bed while Thing scrambles over with a Toothless stuffed animal and tugs on her pant leg to get her attention. She bends down and taps index fingers with them, mumbling a ‘thank you, Thing.’ and grabs the stuffed dragon to toss onto the bed followed by her hoodie being tossed onto the chair at Wednesday’s desk.

Yoko situates herself to lay on Enid’s bed and says nothing, not wanting to disturb the energy of the dorm. The somber sounds of Wednesday’s cello started filling the air, a melancholy version of Sound of Silence, the irony was not missed on the name and the time of night. Yoko huffs a laugh and closes her eyes. Only a minute into the song Yoko hears Enid’s voice.

“Hey Yoko, what did you do to wind up here tonight?” Enid’s voice is just loud enough to carry over the music flowing into the room.

“She said dream me kissed someone else so real life me must also want to kiss someone. She’ll come to in the morning, I think the day out in Jericho just tired her out more than usual because she hasn’t been sleeping well.”

“Hmm that’s kind of funny though. Oh don’t forget to tell everyone not to bring big attention to Wends’ birthday today.” Her voice is quieter this time and Yoko waits a few seconds before responding, suspecting Enid may be close to passing out.

“Yeah we made black cupcakes with black frosting for the hangout tonight but we aren’t going to do anything. They’ll just be there to snack on.”

“She’ll like that, thanks Yoko.” The tail end of Enid’s sentence was mumbled and the words almost didn’t make sense as she faded off into sleep.

Yoko peeks an eye at her friend, a ray of sunshine amidst a sea of black pillows and blankets. Yoko squints, taking in the size of the bed and realizing that it was bigger than the standard size given to the students. She smiles and rolls over to her side with her back facing the sleeping girl. Her eyes begin to grow heavy and she lets herself fall into a light sleep as the song approaches its end. It never came as a surprise to Yoko to hear the seemingly random late night serenades from the Ophelia Hall balcony but now, knowing it was in an effort to soothe her best friend, she found herself appreciative of Wednesday. She made a mental note to thank her for being someone Enid could rely on and allowed sleep to take her under fully.

In the morning she wakes to a text from Divina asking her to come back so that she can lay in bed with her until it is time for them to get ready. Yoko stands and quietly makes her way to the door, stopping only to snap a picture of the pair sleeping in Wednesday’s bed. She sends it to Enid and deletes it from her phone, an agreement she had made with Wednesday after seeing how Enid had fawned over her during mani pedis after the mirror selfie moment. ‘ If you don’t delete it from your phone I will simply throw your phone from my balcony attached to a stick of dynamite.’ She feels a tap at her foot as Thing signs in his own way that they will lock the door when she leaves. With her phone in her pocket and her slides on her feet she heads to the door and bends down to connect index fingers with Thing as she had seen Enid do the night before. The door clicks shut and Yoko waits to hear the lock slide into place before she’s off to her dorm.

Divina

“No, Yoko, I swear I didn’t put garlic in any of it. Now will you please just taste test the cupcake.” Divina chuckles as she holds it up to her girlfriend's mouth.

“I find it quite amusing that the dynamic you two share today rotates around whether or not one is willing to poison the other.” Wednesday says as she walks into the Ophelia commons.

Enid trails in behind her, giggling to herself as Thing signs something to her that only the two of them would ever laugh at. Wednesday pauses as Enid shrugs her coat off and hands it to her roommate, the motion not going unnoticed by the others in the room.

“See, Yoko, you’re being so paranoid that Addams is entertained by it.” Divina grazes a kiss along her girlfriend's cheek.

Yoko slowly pokes her tongue out and tastes the frosting, her eyes catching Wednesday’s as the girl seems to get upset at the lack of garlic in the small treat.

“Shame.”

“Wednesday.” Enid scolds.

Divina sees a smirk cross Yoko’s face from behind the cupcake and taps her mouth with it again, a smudge of frosting left behind on her nose. She catches sight of Wednesday looking over at Enid who is holding eye contact with Yoko, an awkward tension settling in around the three of them.

“Are we just going to stand here all night or are we going to actually hang out and, you know, talk or whatever.” Bianca says with a yawn from the recliner in the corner of the commons.

“I wouldn’t turn down the opportunity to beat you in a game of stand and be silent.” Wednesday says with a smirk.

“Woah, Addams, coming in hot with the jokes tonight.” Bianca replies with a roll of her eyes.

“My standup act will be killer.”

The group shares a laugh and Divina catches sight of Wednesday pulling Enid’s phone from the pink coat pocket shortly followed by it being slipped into Enid’s back pocket. She looks over to Yoko and quirks an eyebrow but is met with a shrug.

“So I know you hate your birthday and all, Addams, but we did still get you something.” Bianca says to the few of them in the room.

“I figured you might do as much.”

Enid’s eyes grow wide and Divina mouths a ‘don’t worry’ in her direction as Bianca reaches into her pocket and pulls out a key.

“We stole the key to the storage room where they keep all the contraband and being in a school of outcasts you can find some pretty crazy shit in there.”

Wednesday’s gaze flashes up to Bianca who gives her a soft smile and hands it over to her. She turns back to Yoko to finish her conversation and Divina lets her eyes wander back to Enid and Wednesday. She notes that the space between the two has grown monumentally smaller and Wednesday is almost pressed completely into Enid’s side with a small smile almost breaking through.

“Also,” Divina brings the attention to herself, “one of these cupcakes is definitely laced with garlic and one is laced with poison. Consider it a party game.”

Enid shakes her head in Divina’s direction as Yoko sets down the cupcake she had just picked up. Everyone’s eyes land on Divina, looks playing from fear to excitement and back to fear across the faces in the room.

“Babe you’re joking right, there’s not actually one with garlic?” Yoko’s voice hints at something between fear and laughter.

Divina winks at her and hears Enid giggle behind her, followed by the brush of Wednesday pushing past her to the table of cupcakes.

“You’ve just made this the only thing she’ll talk about once we leave here.” Enid says as she walks up next to Divina.

Divina shrugs, giving the goth a look of curiosity as she crouches down next to the table and begins comparing cupcakes to one another.

“What exactly is she doing?” Divina asks Enid in a low tone.

“Oh, well she’s probably going full detective to try to find the poison one and the garlic one. It looks like she took one cupcake as a control and is comparing density and texture of each one by observation. No taste testing required since she isn’t huge on sweets.”

“You would be correct, Enid. I’m impressed with your observation skills as of late.” Wednesday responds without turning around to look at the two girls.

Divina’s eyes stay on Enid, watching as her cheeks tint pink and her smile grows at the praise she was given.

“Found them both. Yoko, I imagine Divina has laced this with garlic because of something transpiring between the two of you. If you were my younger brother I would have shoved this in your mouth immediately without alerting you to the fact that you are allergic to it.”

The room stilled as Wednesday took a few steps towards Yoko and Divina took one in their direction, stopping only when Enid put a hand on her arm.

“She won’t do it, she likes Yoko too much to hurt her.” Enid says quietly without taking her eyes off Wednesday.

Divina remains cautious as she watches Wednesday approach Yoko, both cupcakes held side by side in front of the vampire’s face just far enough to not be a real threat.

“Give me a reason not to and I won’t.” She says slyly.

“I’ve been in your room after lights out.” Yoko says in a rush.

Wednesday scowls, lowers the cupcakes, and rolls her eyes as she places one onto the table and licks only the frosting off the other and discarding the cupcake itself into the small trash can.

“It wasn’t even that much garlic, you would have had mild discomfort. As for the poison, I will eat that when Enid isn’t present.”

Enid sighs in relief and walks over to Yoko and Wednesday, her shoulder nudging the shorter girls and her hand brushing slightly against the others. Divina smirks at the two and makes a note to ask Yoko about what exactly she’s seen in their room on the nights she’s been over.

An hour or so after the cupcake incident the group prepares to head to to their dorm, Enid and Wednesday taking their leave first for Wednesday to be back to their dorm in time for her writing hour.

“We all feel it right?” Divina asks the other two girls as they sit in front of the fireplace together.

“Oh, yeah. Yoko you definitely know something, what’s up.” Bianca raises an eyebrow in Yoko’s direction.

“My life has been threatened enough today, thank you.” Yoko responds as she leans back in her seat and closes her eyes.

Divina sighs and rolls her eyes, “Wait, the poison cupcake is still on the table.” She walks over to it and picks it up, gently holding it as she heads to the door.  “I’ll be right back, I don’t want anyone to get poisoned by accident.”

She walks down the halls towards Wednesday and Enid’s room stopping only when she gets there, cupcake in one hand as the other is raised to knock. As she goes to knock she hears Enid giggle and Wednesday’s voice from the other side.

“Enid, stop. I’m not going to take a picture with the key.  I’m going to break into the contraband closet with the key.”

“You can do both!” Enid giggles again.

Divina takes this time to knock and end Wednesday’s torture, a groan from Enid confirming that she had done just that. As the door opens she catches sight of a defeated Enid in the background and laughs internally at the two.

“You forgot your poison, also you should totally take a picture with the key.” She says with a laugh.

She’s met with a door closing in her face and turns around to leave, the sounds of the two arguing growing quieter  with each step she takes back to the commons. When she gets back she takes a seat next to her girlfriend, draping her legs over Yoko’s lap and leaning against the arm of the love seat they’re occupying.

“They’ll get together after the party Yoko is throwing in a couple weeks at that abandoned place or they’ll dance around it until the day after.” She says with certainty.

The other two shrug, Divina’s intuition was never wrong, and continue on with whatever conversation they were having. She settles her head against Yoko, readjusting for comfort, and begins to nod off not even noticing when Bianca leaves or when the fire dies down.

“I know you’re barely awake but I want you to know I can’t carry you back tonight, I haven’t had any blood since breakfast.”

Divina sighs as she stands, pulling on Yoko’s arm to bring her to her feet and intertwining their fingers  as they walk back to their shared dorm.

“I think Addams will make the first move.” Yoko hides a yawn as her sentence finishes.

“Oh, yeah absolutely.”

Notes:

This was more or less indulgent and for me to kinda focus out on other characters. I take criticism and won't tell you if I cry?
