Chapter Text
"Hey, you awake?" Jessie's sleeping form doesn't respond.
creeping over to her side of the room she shakes her shoulders. quickly backing up and ducking as a fist meets empty air where her head would've been. Jessie wakes with a start as her mind catches up with her body. "uhmmm. what is it Thea?"
Thea grins down at Jessie. asking in a whisper "wanna see something?" Jessie's brows furrow but she nods. asking quietly "does it involve moving?" Thea nods.
Jessie sits on the edge of her bed, having to bend her neck back to see Thea's face in the moon light. they've spent over a year in this foster home together, Thea being the older one had become like Jessie's older sister. they'd become tied to the hip since they met.
Thea tosses Jessie a coat and shoes saying "we need to walk to see it."
Jessie gives an odd look but complies and slips into the proper clothes. Thea has already gotten dressed for the cold weather that comes with winter in Hudson Valley New York.
Thea holds the window open for Jessie to climb through and follows her out, placing a pen on the frame before closing it so it won't latch and they can climb back through. Thea confidently begins walking down a small pathway in the forest behind the house, Jessie more hesitantly following after the dark haired girl.
She continues to walk up the last few yards up the hill before coming to a mostly flat hilltop field overlooking a dense forest, the sky several shades of midnight black to baby blue. it was as if the sky had glitter poured over it spread into a beautiful canopy of stars.
Jessie has never seen such a breathtaking sight she could only stare up at the beautifully breathtaking view in speechless awe. Thea looks between the sky and Jessie's expression, satisfied with her choice. after a few minutes she says "I found this a few months back, I spent most of the night out here. I couldn't find words to describe the feeling."
Jessie look at her and says "peace. I think that's what this is called." before looking around with a soft smile. the full moon lighting up the forest the tree branches and the leaves on the forest floor making it look like a beautiful mystical wonderland. if she had a choice, she'd never leave.
but that's not how the world works. that's not how things go. especially not for her. so she asks softly "can we just stay here for a little while?" Thea looks over at her and nods, sitting down on the ground.
she asks quietly "can you promise me something?" Thea looks over at her and says "sure." Jessie says "Promise you won't leave me, I don't want you to leave like everyone else." Thea gives her a sad smile grabbing her hand and says "I promise I won't, your my little sis after all." Jessie gives her a smile as they sit in silence.

climbing back through the window silently closing it behind them. quickly putting their coats and shoes right back where they belong as the sun begins to hit the horizon. they slip under the covers and close their eyes right as the door opens and their foster father shouting loudly "get up! breakfast, school then chores! you know the drill!" before slamming the door closed.
Thea and Jessie look at each other as they both let out breaths they didn't realize they were holding. after a few heartbeats they begin laughing before getting ready for the day. chatting quietly about seemingly nothing before heading to the kitchen. sitting on the counter was two plates each had one burnt over easy egg and one slice of moldy bread with a glass of expired milk. Thea and Jessie don't react to the 'food' they'd been given because to them it's normal.
both eat it without reaction. giving their foster mother a smile saying in unison "thank you, ma'am." grabbing their bags and walking out the door.
