“If McGonagall sees us, we’re toast.”
“Don’t be a ninny, Wormtail.”
“C’mon Moony! It’ll be fun.”
“Freezing, more like.”
Four boys snuck out of the castle near the forest. They carried towels and a sense of rebellion, making their way toward the lake.
Technically, they weren’t breaking curfew.
Not yet.
They’d snuck out after dinner, knowing that the teachers didn’t pay as much attention, distracted by office hours and detentions.
The water held the memory of warm June sunshine.
“Last one in’s a rotten dragon egg.” James flashed his pale arse as he leapt into the lake.
Sirius whooped and followed him, Remus sighed, rolling his eyes. Peter still had his trousers tangled up with his shoes.
Later, in the light of a crescent moon, they wrapped up in towels and perched on boulders, talking into the night.
“I’m going back. Prefect rounds,” Remus explained. “Don’t let me find you.”
James waved. Peter, shivering too much to speak, gathered up his clothes and hurried after.
Sirius glanced at James, grinning. “Shall we make sure he finds us?”
He laughed and tackled Sirius with a kiss. Sirius caught him, and both their towels slipped free.
“Warm me up, first,” he murmured.
