Work Text:
Lan Zhan has had this nightmare before—walking into a class late(!) only to discover that there's a test(!!) that he somehow didn't know about(!!!) and therefore hasn't done any of his exam day prep routine for(!!!!).
He rushes to his seat, where he finds, to his surprise, a fresh blue book, a blank scantron, his favorite style of #2 pencil, and a very cute bunny-shaped eraser all neatly laid out on his usual desk. From the next desk, Wei Ying catches his eye and winks at him, mouthing, "You've got this!" before turning back to his own paper.
Feeling much more settled—and bolstered by this unexpected kindness from his cheerful friend—Lan Zhan takes his seat and completes his exam, pleased to see that his studying habits throughout the semester have left him well-prepared, even for a surprise test. Wei Ying finishes his test quickly, as usual, and waves at Lan Zhan again as he turns in his papers and heads out the classroom. Lan Zhan works steadily through the class period, making sure his answers are correct and complete, before turning in his exam as well. He's pleased.
Outside, Wei Ying pushes off the wall where he's been waiting to fall into step with Lan Zhan. "What'd you think of question three? That was tricky, but I think I figured out that the prof was looking for..."
Lan Zhan smiles at how normal this is, despite the surprise start to the day.
"Wei Ying," he says, when his friend has paused in his post-exam chatter. "Thank you."
Wei Ying blushes. "Ah, Lan Zhan, you're never late, so I figured it'd help if I put out your test materials for you. I had extras anyway."
"The pencil?"
He laughs. "Ah, well... Lan Zhan obviously knows the best, so I started using that kind too, for luck."
Lan Zhan's heart fills with warmth. "And the eraser?"
"I, ah," Wei Ying ducks his head and smiles, "I saw it the other day, and it reminded me of you. I hadn't found the right time to give it."
Lan Zhan has been looking for the right time for something too, and it seems the universe has declared today the day. "Wei Ying, I must ask you for one more favor."
"Of course, Lan Zhan!"
He isn't normally a tactile person, but— "May I hug you?"
Wei Ying grins a huge sunshine smile and practically leaps into his arms. "Lan Zhan," he says, "all you ever had to do was ask!"
"Mn," hums Lan Zhan happily, "then may I ask to buy Wei Ying lunch today as well?"
"Lan Zhan, you buy me food all the time," laughs Wei Ying.
Wei Ying is still cuddling him right here in the hallway, so Lan Zhan is pretty sure what his answer will be when he clarifies, "May I take you to lunch as a date, Wei Ying?"
His adorable, sweet, lovely Wei Ying makes a cute, shocked little squeak. "Lan Zhan! You like me like that??"
Lan Zhan feels a tiny smile on his own lips. "I like you like that," he confirms.
"You would really want to be my boyfriend?" Wei Ying asks, eyes shining.
"Nothing would make me happier."
"This is the best day EVER!" Wei Ying declares.
Lan Zhan agrees.
