Chapter Text
It was useless. They couldn’t defeat Riddle. Not when their bodies were already giving out, not when their mana was running out.
Cater looked to Trey beside him, determined by what he was about to do. Thankfully everyone was already evacuated with the help of the first years. He hoped Trey wouldn’t blame him after this. Well, if he could that is.
“Split Card!” he muttered. In a flash, two of his clones appeared beside him. ‘Two only huh, well, it’ll do.’
Trey, who noticed the sudden addition in numbers, yelled, “What are you doing, Cater? I don’t think your clones will really help here!”
Thankfully, he still had his focus on Riddle. Cater motioned his clones to come closer, “Alright you sexy body doubles, I have a job for you! Get me out of here, stat.” he paused, “And come back for Trey afterwards, ‘kay?” he whispered.
His clones nodded in reply. They lowered down so Cater could climb onto their shoulders. Trey, who was still blissfully unaware of the commotion behind him, continued to fire spell after spell at his childhood friend.
Once he was settled, he held onto their shoulders for stability. ‘Sorry, Trey. I’ll come back for you but I gotta prioritize myself first, right?’ Before he could regret his decision and be overridden with guilt, he squeeze his clones’ shoulders, signaling them to take off.
Trey had finally noticed something was wrong, it was as if Cater was gone. He couldn’t feel the other’s presence beside him. “Cater?” he said, “Are you okay?”
But he was met with silence. He took his eyes off Riddle and turned to his left, but there was no one in sight. Not even Cater’s clones.
‘It couldn’t be… he didn’t- He didn’t leave me, right?’
His thoughts were interrupted by Riddle, who hit him with a spell. It knocked him off his feet, leaving Riddle to send another blast of magic his way. He cursed as his tried to counter it, only for his magic pen to fly out of his hand. He collapsed in defeat. ‘Why, Cater? Why did you leave me? And without a word too?’ were his last thoughts before he slipped into the darkness.
