Work Text:
"There is no way that is true, Clyde," Maria exclaims. "Sarah Jane did not tell you that."
"That's true," Clyde admits.
Maria raises an eyebrow.
"But Mr. Smith did," he continues smugly.
Maria starts laughing. "sure he did."
"He did!" Clyde insists, tapping his finger on the table for emphasis.
Maria shakes her head. She turns to Luke, who is almost studiously eating his sandwich. "Luke? any comment?"
Luke quickly swallows the bite he just took. "It doesn't sound likely," he says, "but we'd have to ask mr. smith to be sure."
"Ha!" Clyde says. "I knew Luke would be on my side."
“I am not on anyone's side," Luke protests. “I’m simply saying that if we want to be sure, we have to check. It’s basic logic, really.”
“Look at Mr. Fancypants over here,” Clyde grumbles. “And you think he’s your friend.”
“Friends do not lie to each other,” Luke says earnestly. “I did not lie to you. I am still your friend.”
“And you’re ours,” Maria says. “We’ll check this afternoon, once we’re out. We'll ask Mr. Smith together.”
“I am being attacked on all sides,” Clyde says, morosely. "Under siege, I’m telling you!” He clutches at his heart, miming that he has been stabbed. “I’ve been surrounded by enemies, truly.”
Luke quietly goes back to eating his lunch.
Clyde sits back up. “Once we get to Sarah Jane’s, you’ll see. You’ll all see. I’m right!”
“Eat your lunch, Clyde,” Maria says. “You haven’t taken a bite. Bell’s gonna ring soon.”
“I’ll eat while walking,” he waves her off. “It’s only history.”
As if on cue, the bell rings. Maria quickly eats the last of her sandwich, then stands up and grabs her backpack. “I’ll see you boys in a couple of hours, then?”
“Yeah,” Luke says enthusiastically. “See you soon, Maria. Have fun in art.”
“See ya, Maria!” Clyde says, then stuffs half a sandwich in his mouth.
Maria laughs. “Bye!”
It was a pity she didn't have classes with Like and Clyde. Luckily for them, the most important lessons were with Sarah Jane, anyway.
