Work Text:

When Lisanna had returned from Edolas, everybody in Fairy Tail was astounded. The girl they thought of as dead for so many years now stood before them: tall, proud, and mature. None were more shocked than Lisanna’s siblings and Natsu, all three of them bursting into tears the first time they saw her. The guild celebrated her return for about a week; raucous, late-night parties all centered around Lisanna.

It took longer than that week for Mira, Elfman, and Natsu to adjust. They hung around her at all possible moments—an easy feat for Mira and Elfman considering they live with her—still gushing over her return.

Lisanna was overjoyed to see them, too, of course. Sure, she had come to love her Edolas guild, but she had still missed Earthland the entire time. She would never forget the day she came back to Earthland: the familiar scent of the air, the faces of her friends and family, and the sweet sentiments given to her all culminated into one of the happiest moments of her life. She remembered sliding under her childhood covers that night, feeling the mattress and warm comforter, and immediately crying from the events of the day.

The next day, Natsu had pulled her aside, bringing her to the quiet greenspace behind the guild. They had sat for a moment, watching the blue sky, before Natsu began his speech. It was messy, fumbled, and sometimes entirely incomprehensible due to the tears choking his throat. Lisanna didn’t ask him to clarify—she let him get what he needed off of his chest. She didn’t think she would be able to talk without crying herself, anyway. What she could make out was sweet and heartfelt, admissions of how much he missed her and how glad he was that she was back.

It didn’t have a clear ending. At a certain point, Natsu’s tears stopped him from speaking any further. Lisanna had held his head over her heart, caressing his hair and patting his back. His sobs shook his entire body. If Lisanna didn’t feel so bad that this had to happen, she would have felt honored that Natsu cared for her this deeply. She murmured replies to his speech, sweet little statements to help him calm down, onto the top of his head.

Lisanna could feel Natsu taking deep breaths, trying to return to a state of normalcy. A few stray tears still dripped down his nose and jaw, but Natsu still sat up and took Lisanna’s hands in his. He held them for a moment, his thumb rubbing over the back of her hand.

“I loved you then, and I love you now. I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving you.”

Lisanna would never forget this moment, either. She would never forget just how sweet Natsu had looked in that moment. Despite his glistening and reddened eyes, his ruddy cheeks and tear streaks, he looked like he truly meant it. That he loved her, and would never stop loving her.

Lisanna didn’t know what Natsu was expecting as a response, but she thought she had a pretty good one.

She jumped forward and kissed him—literally laughing into his mouth with glee as she did so. Natsu was shocked, at first, but he recovered. She soon felt his hands, ridiculously warm as always, pressing into her back and pulling her close.

They weren’t very experienced kissers. In fact, it was both of their first kisses. They ran out of any fancy moves quickly, and resorted to just holding their lips against each other’s. Looking back, it was silly, but they really just didn’t know what else you could do with a kiss.

Still, it was special. Natsu’s breath tickled the top of Lisanna’s lip. She could feel the incremental rise and fall of his shoulders with every exhale. His lips were warm, wet (from tears or just regular saliva; Lisanna couldn’t tell), and soft. It was a sensation Lisanna thought she’d never felt before. She tried to think of anything similar, but nothing came up.

They separated. Natsu’s lips were pressed together in an awkward, thin smile. Lisanna matched it. “I’m so glad I was able to come back to you,” Lisanna whispered.

“Me, too,” Natsu sniffled, obviously trying to keep in a second bout of tears. “Let’s head back to the guild.”

They both stood. Lisanna laughed in her head as she watched Natsu try in vain to brush a grass stain off his knee. He grumbled something under his breath before giving up and just walking to the guild. Lisanna followed next to him.

It wasn’t a long walk, and they were soon entering through the guild's creaky back door. People milled about, working or conversing, not paying much attention to the pair that just re-entered. Lisanna gave Natsu a meaningful look, holding it for a few seconds, before quietly walking out into the guildhall. She settled herself into a booth with some of her friends and immediately began to chat with them.

Natsu leaned against the doorframe for a moment longer, not wanting to go into the public quite yet. He took a deep breath. He could feel the ghost of Lisanna’s touch, a faint sensation of her lips that his body was still buzzing over. He let go of his breath, and the sensation left with it.

Natsu would never forget this moment, either.
