Together Still, You and Me

Summary:

Hinata pulled a blanket out of his bag, unfolding it and draping it around his shoulders before holding out an arm to beckon to Yuta. “C’mere, Yuta-kun, it’ll be warmer if we share! Don’t make me sit here all alone~.”

Yuta couldn’t help but roll his eyes, but tonight he was happy to indulge his brother’s clinginess.

---

Ever since they were little, the twins have had their own tradition for celebrating their birthday. A lot of other things may have changed, but this will always stay the same.

Notes:

Well, it's not my best work. I didn't really have any concrete ideas, just some themes and interactions floating about in my head that I strung together in a hurry to have something done in time for their birthday. So yeah, it's a little rough, but I hope y'all like it anyway.

Also, I wrote this from Yuta's POV and yet he refused to come home on his birthday scout. I'm now convinced he's holding a grudge against me for something.

Work Text:

Yuta loved to do things on his own. Just him, as his own person, as Yuta. But there were still times where he simply needed to be with Hinata. And so, tonight they sat together in the Seisoukan gardens, trying their best to stargaze despite the light pollution, counting down the minutes until the next year of their lives began.

The nights were still cold, the wind brisk. Another breeze stirred up, biting at Yuta’s cheeks and rustling through his hair. It was strange, even that felt different now that he’d grown it out.

Well, pretty much everything felt different now, he supposed.

He moved closer and let Hinata wrap the blanket around his shoulders too before pulling it tight around them both. On instinct, they leaned their heads gently together.

It was far from the first time they’d sat together like this, waiting to grow another year older, but it still felt different, being in a new place. Yuta had refused to go home this year, and it was one thing he was grateful that Hinata hadn’t put up a fight about. He didn’t want to spend another birthday in that house, where their very existence felt like a curse. At least here, there’d be a party and celebrations and joy.

At least here, people were happy that they were alive.

Hinata reached for Yuta’s hand suddenly, and Yuta easily laced their fingers together. Normally he wouldn’t care for all this physical contact, but . . . well, tonight it was alright. Tonight, they both needed each other.

Not because they were two halves of a whole — Yuta was sure of that now. They were each complete on their own, two individual beings with their own hearts and souls. They weren’t even mirror images, not anymore. Hinata had started that process years ago, and Yuta had swiftly finished it a few months back. It was more like . . . they were two iterations on the same idea. Cut from the same cloth. Similar in plenty of ways, but different in so many more. It wasn’t a bad thing, either. It was good to be different. Yuta needn’t worry about living up to his brother, and Hinata needn’t worry about what parts of himself he needed to match or change. They were still learning, and it would take time, and it was almost never easy, but like this, they’d slowly been able to start growing even more.

And yet, even if their hearts weren’t connected, or they didn’t have whatever other twin-magic Hinata used to make them more marketable (and most likely believed in, to be honest), they still needed each other. Because despite it all, they were still brothers. Despite it all, they’d always been with each other, ever since the day they were born.

As if on cue, both of their watches buzzed with an alarm. Midnight, March 5th. They didn’t know exactly what time they’d been born. Neither of them could remember if their mother had ever told them, and they didn’t dare ask their father. So they’d always used midnight, ever since they’d started doing this, years and years ago.

Well, Hinata was still mostly the older one, so he was always first.

“Happy birthday, Hinata-kun.”

Hinata grinned and squeezed Yuta’s fingers. “Happy birthday, Yuta-ku~n!”

Here’s to another year of you and me.
