Work Text:

Whizzer gets home from work later than he means to. His last client had shown up late, forcing him to work late. It's 8 PM, and getting increasingly dark out. He takes his jacket off and sets his bag down, wanting nothing more than to cuddle with Marvin and go to sleep.

Whizzer walks into the bedroom where Marvin stands at the window. Whizzer watches, standing behind him. Marvin looks so relaxed. It is a sight for sore eyes. Their first time around he was always tense. Whizzer doesn’t think Marvin even noticed. It was so deep rooted in him. But now. He stands at the window, back to Whizzer and he’s relaxed. Comfortable. Marvin opens the window, letting the breeze in. It’s beautiful out. Late August evening, the trees in their backyard leaving dark shadows across the grass like black pools. Whizzer walks up to him and wraps his arms around Marvin’s waist. He leans his head down onto Marvin’s shoulder and knocks their heads together. Marvin lets out a content sigh.

“Sorry I’m late, baby,” Whizzer says. “This couple showed up late for their shoot and I couldn’t leave until we finished.”

“It’s all right,” Marvin responds. “I missed you though.”

Whizzer sighs. “I missed you too, love.”

This was new. Two years ago Marvin would’ve been mad, would’ve started a fight. Whizzer would’ve fought back tears, would’ve snapped out comebacks, tearing as deep as he could. They would’ve torn each other to shreds.

They stand in silence for a moment.

“What are you thinking about?” Whizzer asks.

Marvin turns his head away from the window to look at Whizzer. “You know there’s this park upstate I used to go to when I needed to get away from home. Our yard reminds me of it sometimes,” he says. “It’s out in the middle of nowhere and you can see the stars at night. I’ve been meaning to take you.”

Whizzer smiles. “That sounds wonderful. And speaking of stars, I’d love to take you down to Texas sometime. If you think upstate New York is the middle of nowhere, just wait until you’ve been to the desert at night. It’s incredible. You can see every single star in the sky. You can see whole galaxies. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.” He turns his head to meet Marvin’s gaze. “It’s the second most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” he amends.

Marvin’s face flushes pink. “Oh come on,” he says.

Whizzer grins at him. Presses a kiss to Marvin’s mouth. “I’m serious,” he says. “You’re beautiful. You’re gorgeous. If I never see the stars again it’ll be worth it to look at you.”

Marvin turns around so they’re facing each other. He stares at Whizzer for a moment, pure unfiltered love in his eyes. Another new thing this time around that Whizzer will never tire of. Marvin puts his hands on the sides of Whizzer’s face and kisses him hard. Whizzer closes his eyes and sees stars. A breeze filters through the open window. Whizzer shivers.

Marvin pulls away, the love struck look still on his face. “You’re such a sap,” he says.

“Oh, and you’re not?” Whizzer asks.

“Only for you.”

“Who you love.”

“And so on.”

Whizzer kisses him again. He will never ever tire of this. Of coming home to Marvin at the end of the day. Of kissing Marvin. Of seeing that silly lovestruck look in Marvin’s eyes. Of seeing Marvin smile, genuinely, not the forced smiles he used to put on. Of being in love. He is so in love it hurts sometimes. The Whizzer of two years ago would’ve run far away from this feeling and never looked back. He embraces it now. He’s grown up. Realized he can let himself stay in one place. Let himself stay with Marvin.

Marvin is grinning at him. Whizzer realizes he probably has the same loving face Marvin had on earlier.

“God, how did we get like this?” Whizzer says.

“Like what?”

“In love.”

Marvin laughs, throwing his head back. Whizzer loves it. Loves hearing him laugh. Loves everything about Marvin.

“I think we always were,” Marvin says.

Whizzer makes a face. “I guess we were,” he says. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”

“For what?” Marvin asks.

“For never saying it. When we were together the first time. I loved you so much, even back then.”

Marvin grabs Whizzer’s face again. “Hey.” He kisses him, pulls back again. Whizzer chases his mouth. Marvin chuckles. “It’s okay, baby. We got our apologies out of the way, remember?”

Whizzer makes a noise of protest.

“It’s okay,” Marvin repeats.

Whizzer rests his forehead against Marvin’s.

“I’d love to go to your park sometime,” Whizzer says. “I’ve really missed seeing the stars. There’s so much light pollution out here." He takes a breath, remembering something. "You know, I almost moved back to Texas, while we were apart. I miss it there sometimes. The peacefulness of being out in the country. I love New York but it can get to be a lot.”

“Well, I’m infinitely grateful you stayed,” Marvin says. “I don’t know what I would do without you. And I’d love for you to take me down to Texas. Though I’m sure the stars can’t be as beautiful as you are.”

It’s Whizzer’s turn to blush. “Now you’re just using my own lines on me. Get your own material,” he teases.

“Sorry. But it’s true.”

Whizzer smiles. He doesn’t think he’s ever smiled this much in his life than he has these past months with Marvin. Past Whizzer would’ve gagged.

“Let’s go to bed, babe. I’m exhausted,” Whizzer says.

They get ready for bed together, the coordinated song and dance of showering and brushing teeth they’ve developed in their couple months of living together again.

Whizzer grabs Marvin’s hand and pulls him into their bed.

They settle in together, facing each other, legs tangled together.

“Are you wearing socks?” Whizzer asks. “Babe, it’s the middle of August. You’re gonna overheat.”

“It’s more comfortable. My feet get cold.”

Whizzer laughs. “You’re ridiculous, you know that?”

Marvin smiles at him, as he so often does. Whizzer doesn’t remember the last time Marvin looked at him and wasn’t smiling. He feels like his heart could burst.
“I love you. So much. God, I love you so much. Even with your stupid socks,” Whizzer says.

“I love you too, baby,” Marvin says. He wraps his arms around Whizzer’s waist, burying his face in Whizzer’s chest.

They fall asleep like that, wrapped up in each other. It’s much too hot out for it, and they’re going to wake up sticky and sweating but it doesn’t matter much to either of them. They would both much rather be warm and uncomfortable than be even an inch away from each other.
