Work Text:

The cool metal tightened around her wrists as her upper half was forcefully bent over to shelter the damp bricks from last nights rain.

That’s it, she had finally slipped up.

Lockhart threw her body back in resistance as if doing anything would help- but she knew her restrainer was a strong man himself. She had observed him from afar and up close, constantly nagging at him and making his job a living hell.

She knew everything about him. If he was going to look into her business, she decided to return the man’s favor. Even if it was technically his job, she wanted to have fun with him at least. The detective firmly pressed her arms against her back as the handcuffs clicked to sing out they were tightly locked. The man continued to press her against the wall as he stayed silent, unsure what to say.

Afraid of what to say.

She turned her head back to get a glimpse at him. Mr. inference, the hardworking detective who was always on her tail, or Naib Subedar she had discovered as his name.

He was a handsome man, it’s a shame every time they met it seemed to be a cat and rat chase- him staying up late nights tracking her location, and where she’d strike next, and her just barely escaping law forces. She always made sure to let inference know she was smart too.

“The less you struggle the easier this will be for you, as you have the right to remain silent, you’re under arrest.” He blankly said, narrowing his eyes at her. The girl stuck her lower lip out in protest, and looked at the man with sad puppy dog eyes.

“..Anything you say can and will be used against you..so I recommend you take me up on that offer.” Inference spat, shaking his head.

That stupid face of hers. She knew he had a weakness.

“The rest of forces will be here soon to take you in. You’re going away for a long time.” He finished, trying to break the awkwardness of the situation. It was finally over, he would be able to live his work life freely again, away from the torment of Lockheart.

Nights he had stayed awake In his office with nothing but papers and cups of coffee, trying his hardest to put together the puzzles the criminal had laid out for him. Others he’d stayed overnight in his office to sleep as the girl had personally written a letter to his home address once- that scared the shit out of Inference. Everything she stood for, he resented. Her flirtatious attitude, her slipperiness, and her morals.

For hells sake, she’s a master criminal.

But something felt wrong.

Very wrong.

“Oh, detective..” she started, her pitch heightening. “You wouldn’t really want to end all our fun now, would you..? There is still so much more to come for us, you know it too..!”she whispered, causing the detective to lean in closer in order to hear what she was saying.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Tracy.” He spat, saying her real name. Her shoulders tensed upon hearing her name. He had done research, all on her. And that intrigued her.

“Once you’re behind bars life will be easier for the both of us.” He said carefully. The girl’s mouth twisted into a small smirk. “Really, It’d be harder for the two of us, don’t you agree?” she asked innocently, leaning her head back.

“What’s that supposed to mean.” Inference calmly asked, looking behind him to check for his reinforcements- still nobody. “Well detective, don’t you think this little game of ours is fun..? We get to do so much together..!” She said with a giggle, turning her head to the side and jerking her hands agaisbt the cuffs. “Like dancing, chasing, and I don’t think I could live without seeing that handsome face everywhere..” she said in a breathy tone, continuing to struggle against him suddenly.

The man’s cheeks turned red as he felt heat rising to his face. He leaned in closer, their bodies just barely touching. “Quit this.” He growled in her ear, pushing her hands agaisnt her back harder. “You’re hypocritical, detective~” she chirped with another careless smile. “I’m on your mind as much as you’re on mine, why don’t you admit it? What good would it do you then, hm? To have me locked away and out of your life? I’m sure you don’t want that, though everything inside of you is screaming to put away with me.”

Inference gritted his teeth- the girl was a master observer of emotions, so she was exceptionally good at getting under his skin.

Don’t let her words get to you. Don’t let her words get to you.

This was wrong. So horribly wrong. He’s a detective, and she’s a wanted criminal- yet it was so so tempting. He was hired to investigate and track her down for arrest. He was being paid for his work.

Yet still, she tempted him. Somehow, she tempted him.

“Detective, you can keep up this chase, catch me next time, mmkay~? I want to keep the fun up for just a little longer..” she said as a last effort, poking out her bottom lip.

He took a deep breath, and a click rung both of their ears as the sound of handcuffs clattered to the floor.

Inference held his breath as the woman stood back up straight before turning to him, a wicked look on her face.

Shit.

What did he just do.

She smiled politely, and closed her eyes for a second. “I knew you’d come to your senses, detective.” She said calmly, taking another step closer to him, extending her arm to grab hold of the man. Her grip caught the neck of his overcoat as she yanked him in close to her as she admired the man’s tomato red, petrified expression.

Was he having regrets and probably feeling horrible? Yes. But at least she was free Tracy thought to herself.

“You’re a smart man, Detective.” She said in a low, monotone voice, leaning her face close to his ear. “But you lead with your heart. I like that.” She said with a mischievous smile.

Inference’s shoulders tensed as he could feel her breath on his skin, a shiver running up his spine.

Yet, he wanted this. He wanted to be close to her, to be held, touched, and worst of all, loved.

There was no turning back now.

The woman brushed some of his stray hair aside before pressing a quick, happy kiss to his cheek. Inference held his breath as his face turned even more red if possible. He was at a loss for words, he didn’t know what to say.

“W-Wai—“ he started, barley even able to form a sentence. Before he could say anything, she was practically already gone, dashing away as voices called out from the entrance of the alleyway.

Shit, reinforcements.

Inference took a deep breath, and threw himself to the ground to explain how she had gotten away, using his bad leg as an excuse for her escape.

No turning back now.
