Chapter 1: Meeting

Chapter Text

Maven quickened his pace- guards trailing behind. He was ten minutes late to meet the newest Newblood to come to him. Although he had lost Mare the Newbloods he was ever attaining was helpful. Except this one. A Newblood with the same ability as Mare that popped up out of nowhere. He had no record in Norta, not even a name. Maven had a good idea where he was from, but no idea who he was. Maven speed up even more; he was excited to learn. He stopped at the door to his room. His actual room, not one of the spare offices he had been using for the others, this one was special after all.

Maven stopped outside his door and almost giggled at the idea. He had interviewed all the other Newbloods in an office that had been abandoned until the current situation. The idea he had not only allowed the most potentially dangerous Newblood to know the location of his private quarters but also into them had Maven biting his nails in excitement and nervousness. Don’t get to excited. The last time you rushed into something you lost that horrible girl you are so attached to. She was right of course Maven needed to calm down. He finally turned to the guards that had gotten uneasy as Maven had stood for longer and longer in front of the door. “You all are to stay here until order by me specifically otherwise.” He didn’t wait for acknowledgement as he walked in the door.

As he walked in, he saw the Newblood already watching him. He smiled at the Newblood with as much warmth as he could. “I’m terribly sorry it took me so long ruling, a Kingdon is harder than it looks you know.” The man didn’t smile back. He sat tense in the wood chair he had been given. “I’m so terribly sorry I would have read your name in your file but..." The white hair man straightens up in his chair.

"Tyton.” Maven passed Tyton and around the desk to his much more comfortable chair. He was slower than he normally would have been, but he had been waiting for this moment since he had heard the news of the mans- Tyton’s arrival. He sat in his chair and rested his head on the palm of his hand.

“Tyton.” Maven let the name roll off his tongue. He hummed. “Well, that’s certainly a unique name isn't it. Tyton.” Tyton remained impassive throughout the exchange. “I like that name it is quite interesting. I'm getting off track though.” Maven sat up and pulled himself closer to his desk. Closer to Tyton. He dropped the fake smile he had; this man knew too much about him for that. “I want to know everything about you. How your ability works, how it feels.” He slowly drew back as Tyton remained neutral and tense. “And of course, I want to know you.” Maven smiled again- a real one this time. “I want to know about your life, your interest, where you're from, how you got here, I want you to tell me everything.” Tyton raised a dark brown eyebrow at him. Strands of white hair were falling over his right eye as he tilted his head back.

“I don’t suppose you mean in this meeting, do you?” Maven hadn’t comprehended how deep Tyton’s voice was until then. It was smooth, not overconfident but not as expressionless as his face. His voice held a tension to it that was not outwardly aggressive but was still a warning. Tyton knew what he had and could do and was ready to fight at a moment's notice but wouldn’t be the one to act first. Maven barked out a laugh the best he could. He tried to make it sound carefree, but he hadn’t been able to actually laugh in years. The laugh came out too forceful and harsh and Tyton’s body, which had been slowly relaxing, tensed again and his eyes hardened.

"Of course not, I apologize for any confusion. I am just simply so curious about you I thought I would prepare you. Are you aware of who my ex-fiancée is? Of course, you are, everyone in Norta and all the surrounding kingdoms knows of her, Mare Barrow. She was a- ahh what are you all called? The stress is starting to get to me.” He softened his smile. He couldn’t scare Tyton away. He was the only hope Maven had of getting Mare back. Monfort and his brother truly thought him stupid if they believed he would fall for this. He wouldn’t- no- couldn’t let this opportunity pass by.

“No apologies needed. I am aware of your past and would be more than happy to tell you about myself and my ability, and the word I believe you are looking for is electricon.” Tyton’s delightful voice filled his ears. As emotionless as always. Maven’s smile sharped on its own account.

“Yes, electricon that would be it. I will be showing you to your quarters for your stay with us. You are free to leave at any time but will always be welcomed.” Maven stood and Tyton followed. “I normally don’t do this but with your situation you will be given your own living space and any questions you have all you have to do is ask and you will be brought to me directly for answers.” Maven began walking towards the door.

“Thank you for your kindness, your majesty. I am sure I will have a pleasant stay.” Maven opened the door and backed away- holding it for Tyton. Tyton hesitated only a second before walking through.

“I will do everything in my power to make sure that is true.” Maven bites the inside of his cheek, his heartbeat pounding in his ears. “I would hate to scare you off.” His little spy.
