Work Text:
It had been 2 weeks since Jason had taken over the undercover job as “Neal Caffrey”, it was an easy undercover job, the acting was kept to a minimal since Neal was a walking cryptid, no one (Not even Peter) knew everything about Neal, he was a true mystery, each time you thought you had him figured out he would drop a new truth bomb that messed up any ideas you had.
Peter Burke, Jason’s handler had wasted several years of his life chasing a man who didn’t exist, or well… He didn’t exist properly until a few years ago when Jason got bored and wanted something exciting to happen.
One night he had gotten bored of normal life and decided to have some fun, he made the alias “Neal Caffrey”, it was a job half done, which was why the alias was so perfect, there were no guidelines to follow except “Don’t kill anyone”, which was easy enough.
Neal Caffrey spent three years in prison after Peter supposedly caught him. The look on Peter’s face when he finally caught Neal was nearly sad to look at, it was hard to believe that anyone would become so happy over catching a single criminal.
Three years in prison and then the league began surfacing in different FBI departments, Jason took that as his sign to get into character once again. He dyed his hair, successfully getting rid of the white tuft of hair that haunted him, it would show again in a few days but it would be weird if Neal was going grey already.
Breaking out of a high security prison was surprisingly easy, maybe it was because it wasn’t Jason’s first time? Anyways, Peter had nearly shit his pants when he got ahold of the news about his pet criminal’s escape, it was clear to see the exact moment his stubborn mindset kicked in and he decided that his life would begin to revolve around catching Neal once again.
Jason gave Peter a few hours to go look at all the red herrings he had placed, before he went into a store and bought a singular water bottle, he knew that within a few more hours the FBI would be circling in on his whereabouts, so he might as well help them by blessing them with the sight of his beautiful face.
As night neared and the shouts from the FBI began closing in, Jason decided to lend a FBI jacket and walk directly up to Peter with a coffee, it was a coffee with two sugars, Jason didn’t get how the FBI agent could drink that crap, but at least his coffee was still safe to consume, unlike Tim’s.
“Here you go” Jason placed the coffee right beside Peter who was deeply focused on the surveillance footage from the store that he had bought that water bottle from. Peter mumbled a quick ‘thank you’, before he resumed his watching.
Several minutes passed before a woman approached, she held herself with a certain amount of confidence and she had a whiff of respect in the air around her, Diana Berrigan made her way over to Peter, she didn’t even look twice at Jason.
“Peter, we have word that he is in the area” Her only response was a grunt, she patted him on the back “Cheer up, we will catch him in no time”
“Right, that’s great Diana” Peter said, he lifted his gaze up from the computer screen and got direct eye contact with Jason.
He did a small wave before Peter flinched and yelled out “Fucking hell”
Diana looked confused for a moment before she looked properly at Jason, her eyes widened “Neal?”
“Hi!” Jason pulled the signature Neal grin out “Did you miss me?”
Peter had bluescreened and Diana was still in shock.
“Welp, Peter my guy” Jason let out a sigh “I am bored of prison”
That small exchange ended up with Jason getting a job as a CI with Peter as his handler, it wasn’t that bad to be totally honest, and working alongside the FBI agents gave a good insight into which agents were acting weirdly.
It was surprisingly fun working at the White collar office, and it was a delight meeting new people. He still hadn’t met all the agents however, he was missing ‘Clinton Jones’ , an ex-military guy, apparently everyone loved him.
The guy was currently working an undercover stint and he wouldn’t be getting back soon, so life went on. Jason moved in with this lovely lady called ‘June’ and he slowly made himself comfortable. Sometimes he would have long phone calls with his siblings, he was trying to get better at keeping contact with them, but he didn’t want to become a part of the ‘Bat clan’ right now, so they never talked about work, instead busying themselves with small stupid stories about their life.
Taking on the undercover job as Neal Caffrey was meant to go smoothly, no bumps in the road. Sadly Jason was the universe’s favourite little toy to play with, so of course everything had to go awry.
One day when he walked off the elevator with several coffees in his hands, the office was summing with activity, everyone was talking and laughing, something exciting and new had happened so Jason tried to hurry over and deliver the coffees to Peter and Diana, his plan had been to strike up small talk, but someone was already talking with them.
Peter, Diana and someone Jason sadly recognised were standing and talking with each other, Diana was laughing at something their guest was saying. Jason walked over to them, still with the coffee in hand.
Diana noticed him and beckoned him over “Come here Neal” She smiled brightly, holding out a hand to take her coffee “You have to meet Jones”
‘Jones’ noticed Jason and the pair made intense eye contact. Out of all people Jason had never expected to be standing right beside his newly adopted brother Duke. Jason wanted to yell out ‘What the hell are you doing here?’, but that would ruin both his and Duke’s undercover aliases.
Diana butted in on their intense eye contact “Do you guys know each other?”
Jason motioned for Duke to answer, the bat had the right to blow both their covers if he wanted.
“Uh, no, I just think i missed that we have this new employee”
Duke should never ever become an actor he would be horrible, Jason made a mental note to get Bruce to force the newer batkids to do theatre, they would learn so much if they did it.
“You can hardly call him a new employee” Peter said shrugging, he made a gesture towards Jason “This is Neal Caffrey”
Duke looked on edge as he smiled and said “Great to meet you, I’m Clinton Jones”
Jason had to restrain himself from laughing out loud, he held out his hand and let a wicked grin cross his face “Pleasure to meet you Clinton ”
Duke looked visibly uncomfortable as he shook his hand “Please, just call me Jones”
Maybe this undercover mission wouldn’t be that bad afterall, he could get Duke to do his bidding under threats of ruining his cover, it would piss off both Bruce and Duke if he blew the cover.
Diana was still looking suspiciously between the two, he hoped that it wouldn’t become a problem, Duke got a mischievous look in his eyes as he looked at Diana and Peter’s coffees.
“Next time get one for me as well” Duke laughed “A pour-over would be great”
Jason scoffed “Sure thing”
Peter, who had no situational awareness, put a halt to the strained small-talk “Welp, we have work to do.”
