Work Header

It all ends when you confess, right?

Summary:

It was no secret to anyone that Mima and Hayate had something between them. It would only take Hayate to be late for one class for the situation to begin to snowball.

Notes:

Hey y'all n.n

This was supposed to be shorther than it ended up being, but I'm proud of the result. I love Hayate and Mima so much that it's a crime this fandom has not enough fics. I'd like to give special thanks to Ellie and Reno for beta reading this fic, I love you both.

I apologize if there are some typos since English isn't my first language.

Hope you enjoy this fic as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Work Text:

It was a nice afternoon with sounds of laughter filling the atmosphere. It wasn’t a weekend yet and people could be heard enjoying the day. Hayate was appreciating the calm of the cafeteria since there was no noise other than Souma and Shun’s talk.

Shun.- Shut up, I had the pencil upside down on purpose to erase some stuff.

Souma.- Were you erasing a blank page? (giggling)

Shun.- Well, it’s blank because I used the eraser, duh.

Souma.- If you say so… I’ll let you “study” then.

Shun.- Thanks… Um sensei, could you help me with these? Sensei?

Souma.- Hayate-kun? Is everything okay?

Hayate.- Uh… sorry, I was spacing out. The cafeteria is awkwardly silent today.

Souma.- You’re right… and there’s not really anything else to do. Want some help from me, Shun?

Shun.- No, thank you. I don’t want you to laugh at me. Sensei, could you help me?

Hayate.- Sure, where’s the problem?

Shun.- It’s on page 84 of the workbook.

Hayate.- Mmm… I think these exercises are similar to the ones we practiced in our first session.

Shun.- Really? Let me look for my notes, then. I’ll be back in a moment.

Hayate.- Ok, I’ll wait here.

Souma.- Why are you so formal with us? You can be yourself with us.

Hayate.- I’m sorry, it’s just I’m not that good at socializing. I’m afraid I will say something embarrassing. Sorry again, that got too dense.

Souma.- Don’t worry, I guess I can understand, but we’re not strangers anymore. Believe me when I say we all like to have you as a friend.

Hayate.- Thanks, Souma. I hope I can get along with both of you soon.

Souma.- Take your time. You know… I found it curious how relaxed you looked while talking to this client from the other day. I think he works at my brother’s job.

Hayate.- Ammm… you mean Mima-san?

Souma.- Yeah, now I remember him. How long ago did you know him?

Hayate.- Like some days ago. Why do you ask?

Souma.- It’s just you’ve met us a few days ago too and you seem to act so friendly towards Mima-san.

Hayate.- I just look up to him, he’s like a role model for me. He seems to have control of his life and sure he doesn’t struggle while socializing.

Souma.- That explains a lot.

Shun.- I’m back, sorry for keeping you waiting, sensei.

Hayate.- Don’t worry Shun-kun. If you need any help, I’m here.

Shun.- It’s okay, I can do it on my own with these notes.

About 30 minutes later, the silence ceases with a stomp in the door by a person who pushes the door instead of pulling it.

Souma.- Good afternoon, Mima-san. Is it just you?

Mima.- Good afternoon Souma-kun. It’s just a table for me.

Souma.- I can see you’ve got some souvenirs. Did you do grocery shopping?

Mima.- Yes, I was short on vegetables, and passed by to say hi. Can I get a hot coffee please?

Souma.- Sure, be right back. Asami-san, one hot coffee please.

Hayate.- Mima-san! Good afternoon, nice to see you here.

Mima.- Good afternoon, Hayate-kun. Glad to see you again, I wasn’t sure if you were working today.

Hayate.- I’m here every afternoon aside from weekends.

Mima.- I’ll keep that information in mind next time.

Souma.- Here’s your coffee, Mima-san. Enjoy your stay! (winks)

Mima.- Thank you, Souma-kun.

Hayate.- Is this your break or did you finish your shift already?

Mima.- I'm done for the day, actually I just came to give you something. Let me look for it. (looks around his bags) Here it is… I found this hedgehog shaped cupcake in a store nearby and thought you might like it.

Hayate.- Woaaaaah (said with sparkling eyes) Thank you so much, Mima-san, this was so thoughtful of you. It’s so cute that I’d feel bad eating it.

Mima.- You could take a picture of it before eating it to remember how it was.

Hayate.- You’re right, I’ll do it as soon as I get home. Thank you again, Mima-san. Ah! I’m sorry for wasting your time, your coffee probably isn’t hot by now. Want me to bring you another one. I’ll pay for it.

Mima.- Don’t worry, Hayate, the coffee was mostly an excuse to be here. I’ll get going, I have to organize all the stuff I bought.

Hayate.- Sure! Take care, Mima-san.

Mima.- See you soon, Hayate-kun. Have a nice day, Souma-kun, Hayate-kun.

Mima leaves the cafeteria and the calm reigns again. Not even a minute passed and Mima went back to the cafeteria.

Mima.- Sorry, I forgot my grocery bags. Goodbye again! (leaves the local)

Souma.- That was so Mima-san (giggles covering his mouth)

Hayate.- This is the second time he forgets something, although this time he did notice and came back.

Shun.- He didn’t notice I was here at all.

Souma.- Of course not, you’re studying on the other side of the room. Besides, he’s got eyes for just one of us.

Shun.- You’re right, wish someone as cool as Mima-san came all the way here just to bring me a snack.

Hayate.- Aw, don’t worry Shun-kun, I can share some with you if you want.

Shun.- Yeah… that’s not what I meant. Thanks, I’m fine without the dessert.

Souma.- (giggles covering his mouth) You’re so cute, Hayate-kun. Let’s clean up already, it doesn't look like anyone else will drop by.

After a few more hours without any customers, they get ready to close the cafeteria and head back home. Hayate goes on his own, while Souma and Shun leave together.

Souma.- Shun, that was unexpected, wasn’t it? That was a bold move from Mima-san on Hayate-kun.

Shun.- Why? Oh right, the cupcake. Well, it was just a snack after all, I was just trying to tease Hayate before but he didn't even notice it himself.

Souma.- You’re one to talk, even when I told you I had feelings for you and didn’t get it at all.

Shun.- Well… it was a surprise that you fell for someone as dull as me. (mumbles)

Souma.- You’re so cute, Shun-chan. That’s why I love you (smiles).

Shun.- You know I don’t like being called cute (pouts).

Souma.- HAHAHAHA, you’re right Shun-chan. (giggles) Then, you’re so cool, Shun-chan. Does that fit you better?

Shun.- Much better, you always know how to make me happy by showing that cute smile of yours.

Souma.- Oh Shun, you sure can be a gentleman sometimes.

Shun.- (blushes) Anything for you (hugs Souma).

At the same time, Hayate was on his way home. The breeze of the night was relieving. Hayate found himself enjoying the environment and decided to head to the park before going home. He was feeling in the mood to change up the pace of his day. Once he arrived, he looked for a bench where to sit and enjoy the starry sky.

Having rested enough he starts thinking about what happened that day. Today was an extremely relaxing day and Mima-san's gift was the cherry on top. I'm so thankful I decided to go to that small animal cafe (smiles to himself ). I promise to myself that soon I’ll be an adult as cool as Mima-san, one who has the ease to talk to anyone with no problem at all. I mean that’s how I ended up being friends with Souma, Shun and Mima-san, right? Hayate decides to lean backwards on the bench but he’s sitting the wrong way and ends up falling from it. Auch, that was so embarrassing, luckily nobody saw me . Hayate finally decides to head home and rest his back from the pain of the fall. At his arrival, he rushes to the fridge to get the cupcake a place for it to stay intact, then he prepares some ramen for dinner before going to bed.

The next day, he’s making his way to college to start a new day and hearing Kurosaki’s begs for him to go on a fixed date. Little did Hayate know that day the internship jobs will be offered before class.

Hayate.- Good morning, why is everyone more talkative than usual?

Kurosaki.- Please don’t tell me you just got here.

Hayate.- Was there anything I missed? (asks confused)

Kurosaki.- We planned on picking an internship job together at the stock market. Did you forget about it?

Hayate.- I’m so sorry, I totally forgot about it (apologizes while covering the blush in his face) Is there anything left for me?

Kurosaki.- I believe so, but it’s not related to our major, are you okay with it?

Hayate.- As long as I get something I’m fine I guess. Let me browse the platform and see what they assigned me. Mmm, yeah, you’re right, it has nothing to do with economics.

Kurosaki.- That’s what you get for not planning things. Is it that bad?

Hayate.- Not at all, it just sounds boring. Assistant in an advertising agency.

Kurosaki.- Good luck then, I’ll keep you updated on my job then. Wish I got paid for this.

Hayate.- You’re not getting paid? I’ll receive an hourly commission.

Kurosaki.- Really?! You’re so lucky, guess planning things doesn’t work out in the end.

Hayate finishes his day after 5 hours of classes for the day and heads directly to the cafeteria. This is such a problem, I don’t think I’ll be able to attend both the internship job and my actual job. I’d better tell Asami-san so that she can look for an extra employee.

Hayate.- Good afternoon, Asami-san. Um, where’s Souma?

Asami.- Good afternoon, Hayate-kun. He told me he was coming late today. You’re here early.

Hayate.- Right, it’s just that I have a problem with my schedule. Today the internship jobs were assigned at my college, and it’s in the afternoon. I wanted to let you know since I probably won’t be able to attend as much as before.

Asami.- Oh… I understand, will you be able to keep working on weekends?

Hayate.- Yes, I can.

Asami.- Then don’t worry, we’ll be waiting for you to come back once your internship ends.

Hayate.- Thank you so much, Asami-san. I promise I won’t let you down. I’m starting tomorrow, so I wondered if you wanted me to find another temporary employee for the meantime.

Asami.- Don’t worry Hayate-kun, I can ask Shun to cover you some days. I’m sure Souma-kun and I can handle the cafeteria.

Hayate.- Alright, then I’ll get going. I’ve gotta ask if there’s any extra information I need to know. Have a nice day and thank you again for understanding.

Hayate left the cafeteria and went flying to the address from his new “job”. Woah this building is huge, I guess it wasn’t too bad that I didn’t get to choose my internship. This place looks like the change in pace that I need in order to be at Mima-san’s level. Ok Hayate, calm down, you’re just going to ask who you’re working with and if you need to bring anything. “Is there anything I bring on my own or is it provided by the job?” Is that the proper question to ask? No no absolutely not, it is way too casual, I need to be formal and give a proper greeting . Hayate was troubled while heading to his future workplace, too troubled to ignore where he was walking. He suddenly bumps into someone who’s striding to the main entrance and both of them fall.

Hayate.- Ouch, AH! I'm so sorry, let me help you grab your things.

Souta.- I’m sorry too, I wasn’t paying attention where I was walking.

While picking up paperwork from the floor, Hayate can identify the company’s logo. This brings a question in Hayate’s mind.

Hayate.- Excuse me, do you work in this building?

Souta.- Yes, are you looking for a position in specific?

Hayate.- No, I’m still studying at college. I was just assigned through my internship job to this company. I just came to ask if I needed anything for my first day.

Souta.- Oh now I know who you are. You’ve found the right person. My partner was assigned an assistant to help him with the recent projects. I can introduce you to each other and ask what you’ll need. Come with me.

Hayate.- That’s great. Thank you so much, and sorry again for causing you trouble during your shift.

Souta.- Nah, it’s fine. Not the first time that’s happened to me.

They both enter the building and reach the office area through the elevator. Souta leads Hayate to the person in charge of reporting his progress during the internship.

Souta.- Aaaand we’ve arrived. Yahoo, Mima. The assistant hired to help you is here.

Hayate.- Mima-san? What a coincidence to see you here.

Mima.- Hayate-kun, good afternoon. It’s nice to see you here. So you decided to work here?

Hayate.- I was actually assigned but I had no idea you worked here. Will I be working with you?

Mima.- That’s right, are you available right now?

Hayate.- (blushes) Mima-san, I’d rather talk about my assignments here than my singleness.

Mima.- No, I meant if you had a free space to give you a tour around the administrative area.

Hayate.- Ah… Sure.

Ugh that was awkward. Why would he ask if I’m single? Of course I had to read the mood and see it’s got nothing to do with it. Well, at least I get to spend more time with Mima-san. Maybe I’ll be able to thank him for the cupcake by helping out in his job.

Mima.- So here are all the offices, at the end of the hall are the napping rooms, and the first door to the left is the meeting room. That’s all you need to know for now. Is there anything you want to ask?

Hayate.- Um yes, Should I bring something for my job assignments?

Mima.- Mmm… perhaps a laptop, we do work a lot with online files. Don’t worry about using your personal mail, we’ll provide you one since now you’re part of the staff.

Hayate.- That’s all that troubled me, thank you. I look forward to working with you, Mima-san.

Mima.- So do I, Hayate-kun. I’m sure you’ll bring me comfort during your work here.

Hayate.- Is there anything I can help you with today?

Mima.- Oh no, we can start working tomorrow, make sure you download a spreadsheet app and file reader.

Hayate.- Alright, are you sure your pending stuff can wait until tomorrow?

Mima.- I’m fine, Hayate-kun. Don’t overthink it, believe when I say your mere presence is all I need.

Hayate.- Then see you tomorrow, Mima-san.

Mima.- See you, Hayate-kun.

Hayate leaves the place after his talk with Mima. Once Souta notices Mima is alone again, he approaches him with curiosity.

Souta.- Mimaaaa, I didn’t know you had kouhais. Especially cute ones. Are you hitting on him or why so casual and smiling?

Mima.- Souta-senpai please stay out of it. He is… special to me. He's like a little brother to me.

Souta.- If you insist… then good luck working with your "little brother" (leaves Mima's workplace while waving)

That comment from Souta raised a worry in Mima's mind. That was close, I need to be careful to not cause Hayate-kun any uncomfortable experience here. This is his first office job and I don't want to be a bother to him. I'll do my best to limit my affection here . Mima was in a dilemma, he was in the best motivation to make Hayate's first job a memorable experience. Nonetheless he was afraid that any help or detail from him would detonate a reaction on his senpai to start teasing Hayate. Well I guess a first day detail won't hurt anyone . What will make Hayate's stay here more enjoyable? He's an indoor person, introverted and likes small animals. I think an accessory for his laptop should be fine

Time passes until it is midnight already. Mima stays late since a project is due tomorrow morning and he decided not to accept Hayate’s help until his official first day. What was I thinking when I rejected Hayate’s help? I could have been home by now, but I didn’t want to overwhelm Hayate before his first day . I just hope he’s resting well right now, I’ll think of a way to make his stay easier . Ugh I feel exhausted, I'll sleep as much as I can right now and use the napping room after explaining to Hayate what he'll be doing .

A new morning begins along with a brand new responsibility for Hayate. Today he's just attending one class, thus there's plenty of time for him to prepare mentally to avoid screwing up on his first day. Today is the day I start a new path in my life. I can't believe I'm more nervous than when I enrolled in college. I should be fine, I have Mima-san by my side to support me, but I don't like the idea of being a burden for him. Oh right, Souma's brother works in an office too, I'll message him to get some insight on this new wor ld.

Hayate

Hi Souma

Sorry to bother you so early

Can you ask your brother for any tips to success in an office environment?

I'm too scared to mess anything up

Hi Sou-chan, tell him that he should be wearing a formal suit or shirt along with a tie. Plain colors are the way to go. Mastering data analysis and design apps could help him a lot for a daily load of work. Finally, relaxing, if it's his first day, he's not expected to show the same performance as a 5 year old employee. He should take it easy and take one step at a time. Hope this helps him a lot :D

There it is, Hayate-kun. Hope this help a lot ^u^

Hayate

Sou-chan? That's a cute nickname. Thank you, Souma-chan.

I think I have a formal suit I used to wear during high school events. AAAA please let it fit me perfectly, I really don’t have anything else to put on . Hayate proceeds to check his wardrobe and make sure it’s big enough, otherwise there’s not enough time to go get another one. Luckily for him, it looks perfect, not too loose nor tight.

Alright time to go. I'm hoping to leave a great first impression on Mima-san's coworkers. Please let this be a good day, I don't like the idea of venting out on Souma because my first day at work was a failure. I wouldn't forgive myself if I left a bad image in front of Mima-san. What if he stops talking to me? Aaaa keep yourself together, Hayate. Today's gonna be great no matter what . After a considerable time of complaining,  Hayate finally arrives and heads in with some minutes of anticipation.

Hayate.- Good morning, excuse me I'm the new assistant, where do I register my attendance?

Souta.- Oh it's you, good morning. There's a machine to the left of the napping room.

Hayate.- Thank you.

Ok, let’s get to work then. Where is Mima-san? Let me check this napping room, I can’t believe they have one here. It’s such a comfortable space, I wonder how they are inside . Hayate checks out one of the small cubicles and finds Mima asleep. Woah what is Mima-san doing here so early? It definitely makes me feel at ease, how can someone as cool as Mima-san can look so cute and kissable at the same time? Stop right there, what am I thinking? I should just let him rest, I don’t want him to wake up and think I’m creepy for watching him while sleeping

Hayate.- Ummm… (looks at the other’s nametag) Souta-senpai, is there anything I can help with?

Souta.- Did you report with Mima already?

Hayate.- I would, but he’s asleep in the napping room.

Souta.- So early?

Hayate.- I thought the same.

Souta.- Well, I could make use of an extra help right now. Want to be my assistant for the day?

Hayate.- If I can be of help then I’m more than ready.

Hayate and Souta spend working in a target audience scope prediction. Most of the work Hayate did was digital projections and Souta just shared the data for Hayate to convert. After three hours, they finished a viability report Souta expected to finish in two days.

Souta.- You’re very good at this, what did you say you were studying?

Hayate.- Thanks for the compliment and I study economics.

Souta.- Really? It's a shame you’re just here as an assistant. By the way, do you think Mima is up already?

Hayate.- I think he should, is there a problem if he stays there for too long? How long are we allowed to be there anyways?

Souta.- Well… I’m sure we shouldn’t be there our whole shift. Give me a moment while I go check on him. You can go grab a snack in the meantime. Thank you a lot for offering your help.

Hayate.- It’s nothing. I’m just doing my job.

Souta leaves Hayate in the office area and looks for Mima in the napping room. He’s at first comforted by the view of Mima sleeping. It’s not new that he’s been a comfort for all of the employees there because of how soothing his voice was and by being one of the youngest there before Hayate joined.

Souta.- Mima… Mima… Mima… wake up, I don’t want to scare you, so please wake up.

Mima.- Souta? How long have I been here?

Souta.- Three hours as far as I’m aware.

Mima.- It was supposed to be a quick nap of an hour. Yesterday I stayed late to finish the project I presented this morning. Wait… FUCK, where’s Hayate?

Souta.- I didn’t say anything because I knew you would reflect about it yourself. He’s fine, we’ve been working on the target audience report I had because he saw you were sleeping.

Mima.- Hayate saw me?

Souta.- He told me you were asleep before I noticed.

Mima.- Ugh that was such an uncool impression of me. What if he thinks I am always asleep during work?

Souta.- Don’t worry, cool guy. You’ve still got the rest of the shift to amaze him. Get up, wash your face and pull yourself together. Gotta make your cute kouhai look up to you.

Mima heads to the bathroom and does as his senpai said. Feeling the water refreshing his mind, he then remembers the gift he got for Hayate from the small animal cafe before attending work. Mima enters the office area and looks for the detail in his suitcase and scrutinizes the entire administrative area for any signs of Hayate.

Mima.- Souta-senpai, I can’t find Hayate anywhere, do you know where he went?

Souta.- Hayate? Oh… the kouhai, well I told him he could get a snack when I went for you, so I suppose he hasn’t come back yet. Just be patient and… (notices a gift envelope) very smooth of you, Mima. Gaining the little guy’s appreciation with that (points the gift). Good luck, then.

A couple of minutes pass and Hayate returns to the office with some cookies and two coffee cups.

Hayate.- Good afternoon, Mima-san. (smiles) I brought you some hot coffee, hope this helps with the sleepiness.

Mima.- Hayate, I’m not always asleep during work, I swear. (worried)

Hayate.- That’s not what I was thinking. I know how hardworking and persistent you are with your job assignments. You must have been working on a stressful project. I understand.

Mima.- Thanks for understanding…and for the coffee. I’ve got something for you too.

Hayate.- Thank you so much, Mima-san. May I unwrap it here?

Mima.- Sure, I hope this goes along with your style.

Hayate.- Woaaah it’s a puffy hedgehog keychain! It looks so cute, I love it. I’ll make you feel proud, Mima-san. Thank you so much for the encouragement and support for my first day.

Souta.- Hey! Mima, listen to this. Your kouhai is a prodigy for this job. We finished the whole report in 3 hours. That’s right, with files, projections and all.

Mima.- That sounds great, keep it up, Hayate-kun. (smiles softly)

Souta.- Where’s the enthusiasm, Mima? What about we go to a restaurant to celebrate his first successful task? Do you like the idea, Hayate-kun?

Hayate.- Um… just a moment, I’m not into big gatherings.

Souta.- Sounds fair. What about you, Mima?

Mima.- Um… ugh I hate reunions, I would have preferred going home early. Sure, why not? Everything for Hayate-kun. Besides, I don’t like the idea of Hayate spending time with senpai. Gotta make sure he doesn’t say anything weird about me.

Souta.- Then see you at the end of the shift.

Mima.- So Hayate-kun, should I fill you in on what I’m working on right now?

Hayate.- Okay, let’s start then.

Hayate and Mima spend the rest of the day going over the materials necessary for Hayate to familiarize with the topics that Mima works on. Then they reunite with Souta and Momo, another female senpai, to go to their plan.

The four arrive at a bar restaurant nearby the company and they all order except for Hayate. Sure he liked his job, and found himself comfortable with Mima and Souta. Nonetheless, this didn’t change the fact that Hayate doesn’t like social gatherings. Not even Kurosaki could make him stay more than an hour in a reunion.

Mima.- Is there anything bothering you, Hayate-kun?

Souta.- You don't like the food from here?

Hayate.- Oh no, it's just that I used to work in a similar place and I'm not that into the menu.

Mima.- I see. I'll be right back, gotta make a call.

Souta.- Don't worry, your company is what matters.

Momo.- Would you like us to bring you something?

Hayate.- No no, I'm fine, I wouldn't like to be a bother for you.

Souta.- If you insist. I'll go get our drinks now.

Momo.- Relax Hayate-kun, Souta and Mima are nice people. Don't be afraid of expressing yourself.

Hayate.- Thank you. Mima-san's call sure is taking a long time.

Momo.- It is… he's not that talkative so it's rare…

Souta.- Here they are, three beers and… I brought you a lemonade, Hayate-kun.

Hayate.- Thank you, senpai.

Souta.- Mima isn't back yet?

Momo.- That's what we were saying. Oh, he's coming back. What's that… (realizes) awww.

Mima.-  Hayate-kun, I understand you might not like what it's served in this place, so I brought you something for you to eat.

Hayate.- Woah that was so kind of you, Mima-san, I'm sorry you always have to cover for me.

Mima.- Well I'd feel bad that after the successful performance you had, you're the only one not eating at YOUR welcome party.

Hayate hugs Mima as a thank you for all the things he's done today for him to feel comfortable. This is such a warm and comforting hug. I just wanted him to feel at ease, but I don't mind receiving his affection

They continue their celebration and both Souta and Momo ask about Hayate's life. For the first time, I feel like I can be myself without feeling an outlier. I know it won't last forever but I just wish that I could stay in the position I am in my life right now forever . The night goes on as well as the drinks, leaving both Souta and Mima under alcohol effects.  They don't look like they'll be safe getting back home by themselves.

Hayate.- Momo-senpai, what do we do about them?

Momo.- Don't worry about Souta, we'll just call his brother to come and get him home safely. Would you mind taking care of Mima?

Hayate.- Sure, then we'll get going. Thank you so much for the celebration. I appreciate it (smiles softly).

Hayate does his best to carry Mima home. He stops from time to time to catch his breath since Mima is heavy, and Hayate isn't exactly a fitness person.

Hayate.- Mima-san, are you okay? Would you like to rest a little?

Mima.- Eh?... mmm… sure, let’s go to that bench.

Ugh I’m so tired that I can barely stand on my own feet. I can’t believe I’m making Hayate go out of his way because of an irresponsible drinker. He’s doing so much for me and I can’t seem to find more ways to make up for it …

Hayate.- Are you feeling better, Mima-san?

Mima.- Yeah, a little. I just have a headache right now and I’m trying my best to relax.

Hayate.- Where’s your house? I can call a taxi and go with you.

Mima.- Hayate-kun, you’re so kind it melts my heart every time you care about me.

Hayate.- What are you saying, Mima-san? I’m just worried about your well-being.

Mima.- See?

Mima shortens the distance between Hayate and him on the bench. The proximity catches Hayate off guard, and starts panicking internally.

Mima.- Hayate, ever since I’ve met you’ve only brought comfort to my life. I can’t imagine a future without you.

Hayate.- (blushes) Mima-san, the alcohol sure is having a calming effect right now.

Mima gently grabs Hayate’s cheek, enjoying the texture of his soft skin and the shy look on Hayate's face.

Mima.- I love you, Hayate-kun.

Mima finally leans his head towards Hayate’s and kisses him. It was a calm and small kiss, but Mima didn’t want to stop. Hayate, shocked by Mima’s action, doesn’t do anything to stop the kiss. He closes his eyes to let himself enjoy it. Mima finally separates from Hayate and gives him a bright smile.

Mima.- Thank you for coming into my life.

Hayate.- I… um… we should get to your home…

Mima.- Would you keep me company?

Hayate.- … Um… sure.

They both finally decide to leave the bench where they were and continue on their way to Mima’s house.

Mima.- Thanks for coming all the way here.

Hayate.- Good night, see you… tomorrow.

Before Hayate could leave, Mima grabs Hayate’s wrist. Hayate, still confused about what happened before, just turns back and sees what Mima wanted. Mima gently holds Hayate’s waist with one arm while patting his head.

Mima.- (smiles) See you tomorrow.

Hayate, flustered by the situation, walks slowly away. The way back felt silent, dizzying and overwhelming. So much had happened that day and Hayate’s head couldn’t keep up with the amount of events he experienced. He finally arrived at his apartment. Lays on his bed staring at the ceiling of the room, trying to keep his cool.

He… he kissed me! Mima-san kissed me! I can't believe it. Am I seeing things? No, no way, I didn't drink a single drop of beer. That's right… Mima-san was drunk and probably confused me for some girl. Probably he'll just pretend that nothing happened tomorrow. Wait, but his words were so specific that he really wanted to kiss me and not someone else. Waaaah this is so confusing. It was a calming experience, the same soothing effect as hearing him praise me or watching my hedgehogs. I just hope that nothing changes between Mima-san and me. I definitely wouldn't like the idea of not being friends. Friends… are we still friends after that? I'll give him some time, and see if Mima-san wants to clear things up

After some hours of overthinking, Hayate finally falls asleep. The next day, Hayate decides to ask Souma if they could meet somewhere after finishing their shifts. Once Hayate confirms his plan with Souma, he gets ready for his classes.

Hayate enters his classroom, sighs and rests his head on the desk. Kurosaki waves at him, but doesn’t get a response. Once their first class starts, Hayate keeps sulking and can’t concentrate at all. Their second period finishes and Hayate finally speaks.

Hayate.- Kurosaki, may I borrow your notes from the past 2 classes? Promise I won’t keep them for more than a day.

Kurosaki.- What did you do with Hayate?

Hayate.- Kurosaki, please, I’m not in a good mood.

Kurosaki.- I insist, this is such a sudden change. I’m pretty’s use I’m the one who should be asking for notes. You’re lucky I actually paid attention today.

Hayate.- Thanks, I’ll bring them tomorrow.

Kurosaki.- Did anything happen yesterday?

Hayate.- (flustered) I don’t want to talk about it. I don’t even know myself what happened.

Kurosaki.- Okay, let’s not talk about it then…

The truth is that Hayate didn’t need Kurosaki to ask in order to feel uncomfortable. That innocent worry from his friend was enough to recall what happened the day before. Hayate was scared to face reality. He didn’t want to stop talking with Mima-san, but he was feeling confused and had no idea about how to react. Besides, Hayate’s inexperience in romantic relationships didn’t help.

For his last class, Hayate manages to pay enough attention to take notes and not bother his friend. The problem was that the end of his classes meant getting ready for work. Hayate went back to his apartment, got ready and started walking towards his job.

Why did it have to get so messy yesterday? It was supposed to be a fun day, I got an internship, a senpai congratulated me and I felt comfortable for the first time in a reunion. If I hadn't helped Mima-san yesterday, would it have been different? I don't think I can keep it together when I see Mima-san today Ah… I'm here already, this whole situation is making me crazy. I just want this day to end and vent to Souma

Hayate enters the building, checks his attendance and heads slowly to the office area.

Mima.- Good morning, Hayate-kun

Hayate.- (looking away) Good morning…

Mima.- So we have an analysis report to do regarding potential targets for a video games company.

Hayate.- Oh… um… sure. Just assign me a part of the report…

Mima.- Is everything alright Hayate-kun?

Hayate.- Yeah…

Mima.- Did your classes go well?

Hayate.- Sorry, I'll go to the bathroom.

Hayate enters the bathroom and locks himself. He washes his face to refresh his mind. Why is he acting so casual? Does he not remember what happened yesterday? Did it not mean anything to him? Hayate starts trembling and letting some tears come out of his eyes. Didn't he say how thankful he was that I came into his life? Ugh, Hayate you’re so foolish. Of course it didn't mean that much to him. It was just the side effects of alcohol. I just wished internally that the Mima-san that I looked up to really had feelings for me. I really need this day to finish, I hope I can keep myself calm at least for the rest of the shift

Hayate gets back to Mima’s desk and asks for his part of the report. They both continue working and not a single word about yesterday is mentioned. Hayate waits for the end of their turn to face Mima and ask him directly.

Hayate.- Mima-san… may I talk with you before you leave?

Mima.- Sure, we can go somewhere nearby to talk.

Hayate.- No, it's okay, I'm going with Souma after this.

Mima.- Alright, then what do you want to talk about?

Hayate is trying his best to keep his composure. Even though he meditated on the decision of clearing things up, it was still difficult to ask.

Hayate.- Mima-san, what did it mean to you what happened yesterday?

Mima.- Well… it was a special occasion for me.

Hayate.- Really?

Mima.- Absolutely, I really appreciate that we get to spend time at work. You're such a hardworking person.

Hayate.- Wait… what?

Mima.- Yes, you've been working for only a day and already accomplished an assignment.

Hayate.- Are you mocking me?

Mima.- Did I say something wrong?

Hayate.- Nevermind, just forget about it. I…

Mima.- Hayate-kun, is something bothering you?

Hayate.- (starts tearing up) It doesn't matter anymore… See you tomorrow.

Before Mima could answer, Hayate rushes and leaves. He tries to get to the cafeteria and ask Souma for help. On the way there, everything seems to get blurry. The tears on Hayate's eyes are making it difficult to see clearly what's going on in his surroundings. He finally gets inside the cafeteria before he could remember to wipe his tears.

Shun.- Hayate! Are you alright? Come here, sit down. Sou-chan, bring some water please.

Souma.- What happened, Hayate?

Hayate.- (cracking voice) I… don’t know what to do.

Souma.- Here’s the water, calm down, and let’s talk about it.

Shun.- Who made you cry? I’ll beat them up.

Souma.- Is it the same thing you wanted to talk about?

Hayate.- Yeah, it is. Sorry for the fuss, I felt overwhelmed.

Shun.- It’s okay, good thing we were still here.

Souma.- Are you okay to talk about it or should we give you more time?

Hayate.- No no, it’s fine. This is such a childish problem, I’m sorry to bother you, it’s just I’ve never been in this situation before.

Shun.- Fought with your girlfriend? Nevermind, you don’t have…

Souma.- Shun stop joking…

Hayate.- It’s a long story, but I’ll try my best to keep it simple. Yesterday, my new coworkers wanted to give a proper welcome and they invited me to a bar restaurant. Everything was okay, two of the senpais left and since Mima-san was kind of drunk, I helped him get home safe.

Shun.- Did someone threaten you on your way back?

Hayate.- That would have been way better. Mima-san wasn’t feeling okay, so we sat on a bench for him to rest. The thing is…

Shun.- Did he throw up on you?

Hayate.- No…

Souma.- Did you get lost?

Hayate.- No…

Shun.- Did Mima-san take advantage of you?

Hayate.- NO. I mean, kind of… I don’t know.

Shun.- Ha, as if… wait what?

Hayate.- Let me finish, please. The thing is Mima-san started thanking me for bringing comfort to his life. He grabbed my cheek, said he loved me and…

Shun.- And? That sounds deep and with feelings…

Hayate.- Mima-san kissed me…

Shun.- Wow… so… did you like it?

Hayate.- YES… no?... I don't know… I mean it's not like I hated it, but Mima-san was drunk, I feel like… it was just a fluke.

Shun.- I mean it could be, but he's just so special to you, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's how he felt about you.

Souma.- Shun is right. Mima-san is so caring about you, I don't think he did that as a side effect. The alcohol just made it easier for him to express himself.

Shun.- Yeah, probably one of the few times he'll be that expressive…

Hayate.- What should I do then? What happens if it isn't as you say? Maybe he stops talking to me because I was a weirdo…

Shun.- Hayate… just listen to yourself once. Do you truly think that Mima-san dislikes you?

Hayate.- Maybe if I ask about it again, he might…

Shun.- Hayate, no hesitation. Be straightforward, do you think Mima-san hates you, yes or not?

Hayate.- No…

Souma.- Then give it a try and be honest with him.

Hayate.- But he doesn't even remember it! What if he thinks I made up everything?

Shun.- Hayate, you said he was being kind and felt comfortable with you. I believe that even sober, he still feels the same, he's just a rock and doesn't know how to express himself. I don't think he's had love experiences in years, so have some faith in him.

Hayate.- I'll try…how should I ask? Should I give him more time?

At that exact moment, a loud noise comes from the door. Even though the sign said CLOSED, the spirit and hope of seeing someone there could be felt. Hayate turns around startled by the sound and sees Mima-san exhausted from running. They both stare at each other, but don't say anything. Souma and Shun can feel the tension in the atmosphere and decide to talk first to ease the mood.

Shun.- Good evening, Mima-san. Sorry for leaving so soon, but Souma and I have some errands to do.

Souma.- Do we?

Shun.- YES, we do. See you soon, Mima-san.

Souma.- Bye bye, Hayate, could you lock up before leaving?

Hayate.- Ah… Sure.

Mima.- Goodbye, Souma-kun, Shun-kun.

Hayate.- Mima-san, could you wait for me while I close the cafeteria?

Mima.- Alright, I'll wait outside.

OK, Hayate. Relax. Remember what Shun said, it's likely that Mima-san has feelings for me. I just need to approach this in a calm way. I can do this, it's to clear things out. Please let this turn out in the best way . Hayate finishes locking the locale, and walks towards Mima-san.

Hayate.- Where do you want to talk?

Mima.- Let’s just take a walk.

They start walking in the surroundings of the cafeteria without a specific destination. The silence reigns between them, no sounds nor intentions of starting the conversations are made. Finally, Mima takes the first step and speaks up.

Mima.- Hayate… about what happened a moment ago… I want to know why you were so upset about it. Is there anything I did drunk?

Hayate.- Mima-san, yesterday after we left the bar… you told me I was a comfort in your life and that you couldn’t imagine a future without me.

Mima.- (blushes) Well… I… it's not like it was a lie…

Hayate.- Then we sat on a bench and… we kissed.

Mima.- (flustered) Wait, we…

Hayate.- That's why I want to ask you, how do you feel about me, Mima-san?

Mima.- Hayate-kun, ever since I met you at that animal cafe, I felt lucky to get to know such an enthusiastic guy as you. Everything you said before… I wish I would have been sober when I said it.

Hayate.- (flustered) Mima-san you know I'm not good at receiving compliments.

Mima.- The thing is, I've been wanting to tell you how I feel for so long, but I can't find a proper time or give up before attempting to tell you. I know it's too soon to ask you out, so… would you give me some more time to make it special?

After Mima’s question, Hayate suddenly falls to his knees and starts crying. He was filled with fear and uncertainty until hearing Mima's words which lifted a weight from him. It was a ray of hope for them to be together. That simple question was the confirmation that Hayate needed to discard the idea of that kiss being a fluke.

Hayate.- (sobbing) Mima-san, I'm so happy that you feel that way. I was so afraid that it didn't mean anything to you.

Mima.- Hayate-kun please don't cry, I’m sorry I wasn't brave enough to tell you all this before.

Hayate.- (relieved) It's okay, now we gotta work to make that special occasion happen.

Mima.- Sure, why don't we go for a detour from your apartment after each day of work? Maybe we will find a new spot to relax.

Hayate.- (excited) Yes! Absolutely.

Mima.- (laughs) That excitement is so you. Please never change.

Hayate.- Promise. Well, I’m going home, Mima-san. See you tomorrow.

Mima.- Sure, see you at work, Hayate-chan.

After clarifying their repressed feelings, they both go home confident that there will be a wonderful and loving future awaiting for them. Mima as soon as he gets to his apartment, falls asleep due to the overwork his body had due to his normal shift and the roller coaster of emotions lived that day. On the other side, Hayate gets home and finds it extremely difficult to conciliate his sleep. In comparison with Mima, Hayate had been overthinking the whole situation for a longer time than Mima.

AH it's so calming to know it's all clear now. I guess I was overreacting the situation, but I didn't expect Mima-san to be shy about his feelings. I just imagined that since he hadn't said anything, then it probably wasn't mutual . I should update Shun and Souma on this. They saw me so affected that I should let them know I'm better now. Meh, I'll go tomorrow to the cafe and spend time telling them. For now, I just want to give my brain some rest from all the overthinking

Hayate thought he would finally find himself at ease to go back to sleep. Nonetheless, 5 minutes passed after his brain stopped overthinking, it went back on track again. Sure, the problem of Mima not having feelings for him had been lifted, but a new one emerged.

AH, the problem hasn’t finished. Mima-san didn’t ask me out yet, what if he gets bored of me before confessing? Sure he’s invested in this now because of some regret from the other night, but now it’s different. Should I change something to be more appealing? What does Mima-san even like about me? I'll try my best too so that he feels glad of choosing to be with me .

Finally, after committing to put his part into that relationship, Hayate falls asleep by both emotional excess and mental fatigue from all the overthinking of the situation.

A new day begins and Mima gets ready to start working. It's one of those days when he wakes up early enough to prepare himself a decent breakfast and not one made on the run. Since he's alone, all the time spent at his apartment is invested in thinking about how to impress Hayate.

This time really comes in handy, I need to prepare what I should do to take my first step. I was so relieved to clear things out with Hayate. I just felt how my heart skipped a beat when I saw him crying. That's definitely a thing I wouldn't like to see again, he's just such a pure and kind guy that it was impossible for me to imagine him so broken. Don't worry, Hayate, I'll make sure you always feel full of joy no matter what

After having some breakfast and planning, Mima heads to his job. At the same time, Hayate is getting ready for his classes. Just like the day before yesterday, he's just attending one lecture.

What should I do after class? Shun sure is busy with classes now, Mima-san with his shift and… maybe Souma is free right now. I'll text him and see if he wants to grab something to eat before I get to work

Shiki Souma

Hayate

Hi Souma-kun

I have some free time…

Wanna go eat somewhere?

Souma

Heya, Hayate-kun n.n

Mind if I bring Shun too? o.o

Hayate

No problem

Let’s meet at the bookstore then

See you

Souma

After planning how to invest his break, Hayate proceeds to leave his house and head to college.

Wah I feel so comfortable right now, like there's no need to worry about anything. I wish there were more days like this. As if it will last forever, knowing my luck I'd be worried again about the most irrelevant thing. Well, I guess as long as I enjoy this time it's okay. I hope Mima-san is doing well too, I'll try not to bring the topic up to let him go at his pace

After a walk and a quick train ride, Hayate arrives and heads to his first and last class of the day. Unlike the past day, he easily concentrates on his lecture, takes notes and asks Kurosaki if he'd like to borrow his own. Kurosaki turns down the offer but can't help to notice the drastic attitude change in Hayate. That friend of his sure had sudden changes in mood, although he'd rather see him happy than in overthinking mode. He decides not to ask nor tease him about it because of Hayate's unpredictable mood swings. Better to just let him be and ask later or let Hayate tell him about it. After 90 minutes, the class finally finishes and Hayate starts packing his stuff, but hasn't left yet.

Hayate.- Kurosaki, about the other day, thank you for lending me your notes. I wasn't on my best day.

Kurosaki.- It's okay, glad I could help.

Hayate.- (smiles) You sure did, see you tomorrow.

Hayate finally leaves and Kurosaki couldn't be more pleased by such an unexpected gratitude from his friend. Although this only confirmed the sudden change in personality from someone down in the dumps and scaling drastically to feel on cloud nine. It was surprising, but let it pass.

At the same time, Souma left his class a bit early to help his hopeless boyfriend.

Souma.- You've got to have a good excuse to skip your day off school, Shun-chan.

Shun.- It's embarrassing, I'd rather not tell you…

Souma.- Come oooon, you've said way more embarrassing things than skipping class. I can handle it.

Shun.- Well… it's just that I was short in time to arrive, so I was striding as fast as I could to get to my first class…

Souma.- and? Were you threatened?

Shun.- I… was running in the opposite direction, so I was twice as far as before… and I didn't make it.

Souma.- (laughs) Aww, Shun you sure are a clumsy guy.

Shun.- Did you bite your tongue? Look who's talking about clumsiness.

Souma.- Anyway, since you don't have anything else to do and you sure won't tell your sister you skipped classes…

Shun.- (yells) It wasn't on purpose come on.

Souma.- It doesn't matter, the result wouldn't have changed, done on purpose or not. Well, as I was saying, wanna go hang out with Hayate? We planned to go eat somewhere.

Shun.- (pouts) Fine, it's not like I had anything else to do, right?

Souma.- (giggles) Alright, want a kiss to make you feel better?

Shun.- Yes, please.

Souma pats Shun to make him feel better and as a signal to let him take the initiative this time. Souma knew that Shun doesn't like to be on the receiving end (regarding love affection). That's why he lets Shun have a bit of control. Shun finally leans closer to Souma and gives him a small kiss, followed by a hug. Souma couldn't help but feel warm from the cute affection from Shun, he was still innocent so his way of expressing love is too. After comforting each other for a few minutes, they finally head together to the bookstore where they're meeting with Hayate.

Souma.- Yahoo, Hayate-kun.

Hayate.- Hi Souma-kun, Shun-kun.

Souma.- Do you have in mind a place to go, Hayate?

Hayate.- Why don’t we just go with Shun’s sister?

Shun.- NO, think of somewhere else…

Hayate.- Did you have an argument with her?

Souma.- Want me to tell him what you did?

Shun.- No no no, let me keep my image with sensei.

Hayate.- Talking about teachers… aren’t you supposed to be in classes, Shun-kun?

Shun.- (facepalms) Please don’t ask about it.

Souma.- (giggles) Shun-chan, you sure are cute. Then, decide where you want us to go.

Shun.- I’d feel a traitor if I suggested going to another cafeteria different from my sister’s.

Souma.- Alright, I’d suggest somewhere but I can’t seem to find a place around here.

Hayate.- Why don’t we go to the cafeteria that it’s in front of us?

Souma.- (giggles) Sorry, I swear I didn’t see it.

Shun.- That’s so Souma of you.

The three got inside the locale and found a small table. Souma and Shun stay while Hayate goes to order for them. In the meantime, Souma and Shun get ready to ask Hayate what happened the other day since he didn’t mention a single thing about it. After a few minutes, Hayate comes back with a ginger ale, a lemonade, and a cola, along with three dishes of the same meal.

Shun.- (sips) So Hayate, any updates you’ve got for us?

Hayate.- (clueless) About what?

Shun.- You know… someone among us cried yesterday…

Hayate.- Are you okay, Shun?

Souma.- (giggles) Hayate, I don’t know if you’re forgetful or evading the topic.

Hayate.- (gasps) AAAA, you’re talking about me. Ah yeah, there’s an update about yesterday.

Shun.- And that is?

Hayate.- Well, Mima-san and I talked about what happened the other day, he said he didn’t remember saying or doing anything…

Souma.- Oh, Hayate, I’m sorry about that, feel free to tell us if you feel upset.

Hayate.- But…

Shun.- Souma is right, we’re here if you want a debrief from your day.

Hayate.- Come on, let me finish what I’m saying. So, he didn’t remember anything from that day, but he confessed to me that nothing he said was a lie.

Souma.- That means…

Shun.- You’re going out?!

Hayate.- (flustered) Stop, let me finish. As I was saying, he said it was true what he said, that he had wished he would have been sober when he said that. We confessed to each other, but Mima-san asked me for some time to make it special.

Souma.- (moved) Awww, that’s so cute from Mima-san.

Shun.- Agree, you’re such a lucky guy, Hayate. Conquering the heart of someone older than you is quite hard. (winks at Souma)

Hayate.- Well no, it’s not like I did anything.

Souma.- Much better, Hayate. That means he fell for your charm, it’s so comforting when someone likes your charm. (winks at Shun)

Shun.- Whatever, good for you, Hayate. You can drop out of college and go live with Mima-san.

Hayate.- No way, I don’t want to be a bother for Mima-san.

Souma.- Really, Hayate? You haven’t learned anything from what you’ve lived the past two days huh.

Hayate.- Sorry, I still can't believe it myself.

Souma.- You've got work after this, right?

Hayate.- (nods) I'm thinking of bringing some coffee for Mima-san. He's been working way more early.

Shun.- Sounds nice, given that you're stealing his sleep.

Hayate.- Yeah, I am.

Souma.- Hell yeah, that's more like it. Mima-san would love a confident Hayate.

Hayate.- I'd better get going. I'll keep you updated on the group chat.

Shun.- See ya.

Souma.- Bye bye.

Hayate goes back to his apartment to get changed. After that he reaches a convenience store nearby to get Mima a coffee. I know he asked for time, but I'm wondering now if I should take an initiative too. It's not like I've got the greatest plans in mind… maybe I can invite everyone to my apartment and then Souma and Shun will read the mood… Nah, they're like me, I'd better tell them to leave, otherwise they won't . Hayate arrives, checks in and looks for Mima in the area. He's talking with Souta right now and a black-haired guy. He decides to wait a moment before talking to him.

Mima.- Good afternoon, Hayate.

Hayate.- Good afternoon, Mima-san. I brought you some coffee.

Mima.- Thank you. So we've got a big project to work on, and as expected, deadlines aren't the best. So we've got to brainstorm some ideas for an advertisement of a book adaptation into cinema.

Hayate.- Woah sounds interesting. May I know which book will be adapted?

Mima.- Sure, you might need to read it to get some context. I can share some insight on what I liked about the book. It's called 'The Lost Diary', does it sound familiar?

Hayate.- (excited) Familiar? I love that book! The way Igarashi-sensei portrays awkward characters in his works is such a wonderful feature. I wonder how they'll adapt that masterpiece in a 2 hour long movie. I'm so happy I get to work on a story I like. I'd love to talk more with you about it, Mima-san. The use of foreshadowing is just so natural, plus the twist the book has at the end is just so amazing.

Mima.- I'm glad you like the work, this will make our assignment a lot easier with the thoughts of a reader involved. Why don't we talk more about it after work?

Hayate.- (smiles) Yes, absolutely. Thank you so much for listening, Mima-san.

Mima.- It's nothing, I'm always pleased to see you excited about the things you like. (smiles) It's a soothing effect you give whenever I see you like that.

Hayate.- (blushes) Mima-san, please stop the compliments.

Mima.- Alright, alright, let's come up with a plan to present for Monday's meeting.

Hayate.- Sure.

Hayate and Mima spend time sharing ideas about what could portray the argument of the book without spoiling it. Time passes until they take a short break from planning. Little did Hayate know, Mima had prepared something for that day.

Mima.- Let’s take a break from this and eat out somewhere, sounds good for you?

Hayate.- Okay, but the cafeteria in front of the hedgehog bookstore is out of the question.

Mima.- May I know why?

Hayate.- I’ve already been there today with Souma and Shun.

Mima.- Oh, this is your second time in the day going to a cafe…

Hayate.- Yes, but I’d be happy to know what Mima-san’s recommendation will be.

Mima.- Alright, then just follow me.

Hayate.- Can you tell me where we’re going?

Mima.- Not yet, it's a surprise.

Hayate.- Okay… I'm scared now…

Mima.- What? Why?

Hayate.- I'm not that fond of new things, they make me feel anxious instead of excited.

Mima.- I see, does it trigger your overthinking?

Hayate.- Almost everything triggers it, but if I'm with you, I think I can handle it.

Mima.- That's great because we've arrived.

Hayate.- Oh. Wait, isn't this the small animal cafe where we met?

Mima.- Indeed it is. I understand you're not a fan of new places, that's why I thought of bringing you to the place where everything started.

Hayate.- (excited) I love it! Let's order some sandwiches and pet the ferrets!

Mima.- Alright, but I get to choose our drinks this time.

Hayate.- (nods) I'll go pet the rabbits while you order!

Ah this feels nice. Hayate is having so much fun, and we get to spend more time together. Should I ask him out today? No, it's not special enough, we did this even when we were friends. What if he thinks this was a simple outing? I need to put more effort into it

Hayate.- Mima-san you should try petting them too. I'm here so don't worry about crushing them. Petting cute things can be comforting, you know.

Mima.- If you say so…

After hearing Hayate, Mima proceeds to pat Hayate’s head. He's touching and sliding his hand softly into Hayate's hair. His fingers are being playful with the hair of the other trying to be as gentle as possible. Hayate, for the first time, reacts calmly to Mima’s touch. Acknowledging the others feelings lets him feel safe whenever he's near Mima.

Mima.- You're right. It has a soothing effect to pat cute things.

Hayate.- (giggles) Mima-san, I meant the animals. Save the pickup lines for later.

Mima.- You're not feeling flustered by my comment. That's a surprise.

Hayate.- Well I realized that if you love me and I love you, there's no need to panic, I just need to appreciate how loving you are.

Mima.- (blushes) Let's eat, we've gotta get back.

Hayate.- Okay.

I totally thought Mima-san was going to make it official here. Did I do something that changed his mind? Nah, I don’t think so, he even teased me. Is he nervous? Maybe I need to give him more time, it’s been one day since he told me he wanted to make it special

They both leave the cafe and head back to their job. Hayate remains enthusiastic due to the nature of the project they’ll be working on. A list of proposals is made for the advertising campaign of the book adaptation. The list is checked by Souta and leaves them with one remaining project, in which they start working on. The ad ended up being an interactive panel in which people can share their clumsy experiences, just as the main character of the book does. They call it for the day and leave pending the budget analysis in which Hayate, due to his expertise on the topic, will be in charge.

Hayate.- We should get going, I’d love to drop by the bookstore.

Mima.- You can get going, I’ve got to update Souta on some progress of a project. Have fun, Hayate-kun.

Hayate.- Don’t force yourself too much! See you, Mima-san.

Before leaving, Mima gives Hayate a kiss on the forehead. Hayate can’t help it and hugs Mima to reciprocate the feeling. He then proceeds to leave and buy some new collection to read in his weekend.

At night, Hayate is organizing his books to kill some time before having dinner. Hayata gets interrupted by a door knock, but no voice can be heard.

Could it be Mima-san? Maybe he already finished his pending assignment. What if he wants to stay the night? AH I haven't cleaned the apartment properly, maybe he dumps me because I'm not careful with my home .

After torturing himself with his internal thoughts, he opens the door and all his bad feelings stop suddenly by seeing the person in front of him.

Shun.- Good evening, Hayate.

Hayate.- Shun? Why are you here?

Shun.- Well I need some help with my homework and I couldn’t wait until tomorrow.

Hayate.- Oh, okay. Come in.

Shun enters the apartment and sits looking towards Hayate without saying anything. Hayate starts getting suspicious about Shun’s visit and decides to interrogate him.

Hayate.- So, Shun-kun… which homework do you need help with?

Shun.- About that…

Hayate.- I can’t see any backpack or bag with you, so I’m wondering where you’ll be working today…

Shun.- Alright, it was a lie. The truth is I’ve been feeling awkward about my relationship with Souma these days.

Hayate.- You’re going out?!

Shun.- Duh, I thought it was obvious. The thing is, I feel like I’m not being reciprocal enough with Souma. He’s just so sweet, tries to invite me out to his plans, and is transparent with his love towards me.

Hayate.- Ok? Go on.

Shun.- But I’m so clumsy when I try to express my feelings that I’m afraid he’d think I don’t love him. What should I do?

Hayate.- Shun-kun. You know I really appreciate you, and that you can rely on me when you need it.

Shun.- Hayate, stop right there. I'm not into guys, just into Souma.

Hayate.- SHUN! Let me finish. (coughs) As I was saying, I really appreciate you but it seems like you don't remember at all what I told you.

Shun.- I know you haven't been in a relationship, I'm a good friend that remembers what his sensei tells him.

Hayate.- Then, why are you asking?

Shun.- Because from what I've heard, Mima-san and you have confessed to each other. How do you show Mima-san that you love him?

Hayate.- (flustered) Well, we're not dating yet, but I try to bring him small details sometimes. I think that's it, I've just realized that I barely show Mima-san my affection

Shun.- Eh? Let me change the perspective, how does Mima-san express to you that he loves you?

Hayate.- Well, he invites me out on dates, gives sweets from time to time and makes physical contact.

Shun.- So that's a boyfriend, huh.

Hayate.- Are you suggesting I'm not?

Shun.- Well, it looks like we're the same, two guys being overwhelmed with love from our partner.

Hayate.- You're right, Shun. I think I'll be more reciprocal with Mima-san. I didn't notice it but it looks one-sided.

Shun.- Glad I could help. I'll do some of Mima-san's charming details with Souma. See you, Hayate-san.

Shun’s visit helped Hayate to realize an aspect of his relationship with Mima. The past days have been Mima approaching Hayate with love details and plans. Nonetheless, Hayate hasn't done anything in return other than accept the affection and go along with Mima's plans.

After a rough week full of new experiences and drama events, Hayate makes it until the weekend. He's got nothing to do, so he decided to spend some time rereading the book that will be adapted.

This feels like a reward after such a productive week. I should be working on the budget right now, but I've still got tomorrow to do it . I’ve been thinking if Mima-san has problems telling me just like back when he confessed to me his inability to properly convey his feelings. I should ask him then, but how? Maybe I could ask Souma about it, but I don’t want him to think I’ve got no control over this whatsoever . Having these insights made Hayate a bit more conscious about his actions, although he hated his overthinking mind, this was helpful enough whenever he tries to avoid making an error.

Time passed, and Hayate started getting ready for his usual job. It’s been a long time since he attended the cafeteria as an employee. Even though he's been enjoying the time with Mima, this was his first (second) job. The pace of it was calm and there was an environment of more people his age. He packed his uniform to put on it as soon as he got there.

Hayate.- Good afternoon, Asami-san. Hi Souma-kun.

Souma.- Welcome back, Hayate. Are you enjoying the internship in PR?

Hayate.- Yes, it's not what I had expected. There's actually some assignments related to my major. I was afraid I would be of no help. You should apply too! I'm sure you could produce some incredible advertising campaigns.

Souma.- You think so? Maybe I'll ask my brother when a space opens up.

Hayate.- (giggles) Probably when I leave it will open up.

Souma.- Yet, I've got a lot more to learn. Hope you can guide me around the library.

Hayate.- (excited) Yes, absolutely. By the way, Souma, where’s Shun-kun?

Souma.- He should have finished his classes by now.

Hayate.- Do you think he forgot his way here?

Souma.- (giggles covering his mouth) I wouldn't be surprised. Maybe he found some friends and it's taking his time.

A couple of minutes later, the bell rings and it’s Shun with someone else.

Shun.- This is my sister's cafeteria. Like I told you before, it's a hidden gem.

Motoharu.- Thank you so much, moving to Tokyo hasn't been easy. Glad to have found out about this place to relax.

Shun.- No problem. Sis, one table for him.

Souma.- Good afternoon. Is it just you?

Motoharu.- Yes, table for one please.

Motoharu was familiarizing with the place, observing every inch of the cafeteria. His gane stopped when he saw Hayate, he found his face familiar and wanted to confirm it.

Motoharu.- Excuse me, do you work at Takayuki's PR department?

Hayate.- Takayuki? Ah, Mima-san?

Motoharu.- Yes.

Hayate.- Yes, I'm an intern right now. I think I've seen you before.

Motoharu.- Indeed. I went there for a meeting of a campaign you're working on right now.

Hayate.- The adaptation of The Lost Diary?

Motoharu.- Exactly, hope everything goes great with it. I've got a lot of faith in you all.

Hayate.- Thank you! Are you the producer of the movie?

Motoharu.- Actually, I’m the author of the book.

Hayate.- (screams excitedly) Really?!

Motoharu.- Yes, I’m Igarasahi Motoharu. Nice to meet you. So, have you read it?

Hayate.- Yes! Several times. It’s one of my favorite books. I have so much admiration over the characters of your stories.

Motoharu.- I’m glad to hear that.

Hayate.- Igarashi-sensei, would you like me to bring you anything else?

Motoharu.- I’m good for now.

Hayate.- (smiles) Alright, enjoy your stay.

Even though Hayate managed to keep his composure, internally he was screaming and feeling grateful for having met his favorite literary idol. For the rest of the day, he felt a strong need to ask him about what inspires his stories. Nonetheless, Hayate marked a limit because he couldn’t just casually arrange a meeting.

Souma.- Hayate, you look afflicted, is there something wrong? Do you know that guy?

Hayate.- Well, I got to meet my favorite author, but I don’t have the courage to ask for a meeting to chat.

Souma.- Why not? Sure he doesn’t mind.

Hayate.- I just… can’t bring myself to do it.

Souma.- Are you shy about it? Let me try for you.

Hayate.- Wait, Souma…

Souma started walking towards Motoharu to ask him what Hayate couldn’t. For Souma, it was an easy task to call someone out and since he knew nothing about the background of Motoharu, he didn’t have a problem starting a conversation unlike Hayate.

Souma.- Good afternoon, I’m Shiki Souma. May I ask your name?

Motoharu.- Good afternoon, Souma-kun. I’m Igarashi Motoharu, nice to meet you.

Souma.- I would like to ask you if you were available for a reunion.

Motoharu.- Oh, if you're up for tomorrow then alright. Next week I'll be busy, so it's the only option I've got for now.

Souma.- Alright! (whispers) Uhm, keep this a secret but my friend over there wanted to invite you, it's just he's shy and asked me to tell you.

Motoharu.- (giggles) Ok Ok, I'll keep the secret. Is this place fine or did he have any suggestion in mind?

Souma.- Why don't you ask him? Let me tell him to come here.

Souma was looking for Hayate and trying to make eye contact. Once Hayate notices, Souma tells him to come moving his hand towards him.

Hayate.- What is it, Souma-kun?

Souma.- I'll let you two talk about it.

Motoharu.- Thank you, Souma-kun.

Hayate.- Umm, sorry if I'm bothering you by asking you out, Igarashi-sensei.

Motoharu.- Don't worry about it. I was telling Souma that since I'll be busy next week, I'm free tomorrow only. Are you down for it or do you want to meet sometimes after next week?

Hayate.- (excited) Yes, tomorrow works fine. Thank you so much, I really appreciate you're giving me this time.

Motoharu.- It's nothing. I've gotta get going, but see you tomorrow, Hayate-kun.

Hayate.- Uhm, are we meeting here again?

Motoharu.- (giggles) I was supposed to ask you that first. Yeah, works fine for me.

Hayate.- Thank you so much, again. See you tomorrow.

Hayate tries his best to hide his excitement but his gaze is full of happiness. The experience of feeling admiration towards someone never ceases to amaze him.

Hayate.- Souma-kun, thank you so much for asking in my place.

Souma.- Don't worry, you know you can rely on me and hope I can too.

Hayate.- Of course! Would Shun and you like to come to my house next week? As a treat for making today's accomplishment possible.

Souma.- Sure.

Shun.- I didn't do anything, but okay, I'm in.

At the same time, Mima was trying to get used to not having Hayate in the office. Even though he had been working there like that for such a long time, having his source of comfort the whole week for him to disappear on the weekend was a new sensation.

I forgot Hayate’s internship is only during the week… (sighs) I wonder if he’s resting from all the work he’s been doing these days. It’s okay, I’ll see him again on Monday. Should I pass by tomorrow during his work shift to spend some time with Hayate? I could get in the way of his work… but I don't think I'd be able to hold myself for two entire days. I was getting used to my daily dose of Hayate… Alright, I’ll pay him a visit and bring him a small gift

The next day, Hayate gets ready for both his shift and reunion with Motoharu. This was an opportunity for Hayate to get insight on what his favorite author takes as an inspiration for his books' characters. Nevertheless, as much excitement Hayate had, there was panic in the same proportion. How to bring the topic without sounding like a book geek? He was one, but it's not the appearance Hayate would like to project. Motoharu's perception about him was in game, that's why preparing mentally (as always) was his best bet for a good "first" impression. After an overthinking morning, Hayate finally heads to the cafeteria. Surprisingly, once he arrived, Motoharu was already there waiting for him at a table close to the window.

Motoharu.- (smiles) Good afternoon.

Hayate.- Good afternoon, Igarashi-san.

Motoharu.- May I know your name? It feels off just to say good afternoon and not knowing how to address you.

Hayate.- Oh right, I haven’t presented myself. I’m Ichikura Hayate, I’m a college student.

Motoharu.- So, Hayate-san… Are you studying linguistics or something alike?

Hayate.- Oh, no I'm not. I'm studying economics. Why?

Motoharu.- (giggles) It's just that your excitement made me think that either you love my works or that you're interested from that major's view.

Hayate.- I see. No, I'm just a fan of yours.

Motoharu.- Glad to hear that, I'll let you know when I plan on publishing a new book.

Hayate.- I'd really appreciate it, thanks for taking me into consideration.

Motoharu.- It's nothing, I just admire the passion you show.

Hayate.- Um… Igarashi-sensei I'm sorry if I look kind of stiff, I'm still learning how to start conversations.

Motoharu.- Maybe new experiences make you feel more anxiety than excitement. Try to have more reunions like this with friends, it'll make it a comfort zone at some point.

Hayate.- Yes, I'm trying it. I wish I could read the mood sometimes. When I met Mima-san I thought he confused me for a girl and was trying to hit on me.

Motoharu.- (laughs) Really? I can imagine Takayuki being totally oblivious to the situation and going on with the conversation.

Hayate.- He did! How did you know that?

Motoharu.- Well, it's not the first time he does that. It's his way to brush things off.

Hayate.- (giggles) True. No matter what the situation is, he's always the same.

While both Hayate and Motoharu were enjoying their conversation, Mima finally took his break from work. As he decided the day before, he would visit the cafeteria to bring Hayate a small detail.

I think Hayate just arrived at the cafeteria. Then I have to hurry up and leave the gift. I didn't remember that the weekend schedule is different from the normal one. It doesn't matter, as long as I get to see that cute face I will be pleased for the day . Mima continues his walk until he’s outside of the building. Before heading in, he notices Hayate from outside, but his feelings of appreciation drastically change to confusión when Mima sees him with Motoharu.

When did this happen? Is this a signal that I haven't been paying enough attention to Hayate? I was trying to give him some space, I thought it was enough to just see each other during work. Maybe I'm just overthinking it, but I can't stop feeling this way. Is this fear? Anger? No… I know what this is . After processing the situation, Mima decides to enter and say "hi".

Mima.- Good afternoon, Motoharu, Hayate-kun.

Motoharu.- Hi, Takayuki. What brings you here?

Mima.- (forced smile) Didn't want me to be here?

Motoharu.- (nervous) No no, I just didn't expect you to go out during your break. Nice to see you here.

Mima.- May I join you?

Motoharu.- Sure, take a seat.

Mima takes a seat next to Hayate and puts his left arm around Hayate’s shoulders. Hayate couldn't process what was happening, even though everyone was on good terms at the moment, he could feel the thick atmosphere of tension that had formed since Mima arrived.

Motoharu.- So Takayuki, we were talking about the adaptation you're working on. Hayate sure is having fun with it, right?

Hayate.- Ah yes, I…

Mima.- For sure, WE are spending time together to make sure the advertising campaign for your book adaptation will have a huge impact.

Motoharu.- Takayuki, are you okay? You seem stressed.

Mima.- I… it's nothing. If you excuse me, I'll be leaving.

Motoharu.- (surprised) Already? You haven't ordered anything.

Mima felt as if his feelings were going to make him explode. Even though he knew he was acting childish and possessive over Hayate, Mima couldn't bring himself to stop with the hostile tone. That's why for the sake of his childhood friendship, he would leave. Just when he's about to head back to work, Hayate grabs his arm and tries to talk with him.

Hayate.- Mima-san wait. Are you okay? Did I do something wrong?

Mima.- (sighs) I'm so sorry.

Hayate.- What is it? I don't understand.

Mima.- (starts sobbing) I'm such a pathetic adult. I'm sorry I ruined your reunion with Igarasahi-san. I know he's your favorite author, but…

Hayate.- It's okay, Mima-san, but please tell me what's going on? I'm concerned about you.

Mima.- (sighs) I love you so much, you're so selfless and caring with me. I'm so sorry again, I couldn't help but feel… a bit jealous to see you so happy with Motoharu.

Hayate.- Mima-san there's no need for you to feel jealousy. You know I'm unconditional and I will try my best to show it. Was that all that was bothering you?

Mima.- Yes, would you forgive me? I'll be more receptive to your admiration towards Motoharu. Ugh, and I haven't asked you out properly…

Hayate.- Mima-san, please stop worrying about it. Believe me when I say the least I want is a fancy confession. I was already hyped when you told me you had feelings for me. That's why you shouldn't give that much thought about it.

Hayate grabs Mima from the cheeks and starts giving Mima caresses. He passes his hand gently through Mima's hair and finally hugs him tightly. The soft skin of Hayate's hand relaxed Mima. The contact between them was enough to make it clear that Hayate wasn't going anywhere and that he truly cared about him.

Mima.- Can we… go out somewhere tonight to ask you out?

Hayate.- (laughs) Mima-san stop please. You know what, come with me.

Mima.- Eh? Where? Aren't you at work right now?

Hayate.- Don't worry about it, I'll sort it out with Asami-san later.

Mima.- Ok, but where do you want us to go?

Hayate.- It's a surprise.

Hayate holds Mima’s hand and guides him to the place he's been thinking of. After such a scene, Mima can't stop feeling awful for his attitude. He was supposed to be the mature and chill adult, but he let himself get carried away by the feelings. Luckily for him, Hayate was comprehensive enough to let it slide.

Mima.- Hayate-kun, why are we outside the small animals cafe?

Hayate.- I want to be here with you.

Mima.- But, I’m still feeling regret for what I did before, I don’t think I deserve this.

Hayate.- Mima-san…

Mima.- No, I don’t feel right by being here, can’t we sort out the problem in your apartment?

Hayate.- (grabs Mima’s cheeks) Takayuki! Let’s head inside.

Mima.- (amazed) Please say it again.

Hayate.- (flustered) No, that was your last chance. Let’s head in and I’ll think about it.

After such an unexpected reaction from Hayate, Mima and him enter the cafe. The place had such a soothing aura despite them visiting it twice already. They both looked through the menu and ordered the same as their first visit, this time Mima asked for the iced coffee in the right way.

Mima.- Hayate, why did you want us to be here?

Hayate.- I was trying to dodge the question some more time, but alright. Sorry if I talk your ear off, but I need you to listen. As you remember, this place is where we first met. My excitement for this place and your search for comfort allowed us to meet each other. Mima-san, ever since I met you I couldn't help but feel admiration for being such a success of adult. I can't believe we've come such a long way, because that admiration slowly changed and now every time I imagine my future I see you with me. That's why… (stands up and kneels next to Mima) Takayuki, would you be my boyfriend?

Mima was speechless. He would have never imagined that the shy Hayate he met in that same cafe would have the courage to confess. Mima recalled sometimes when Hayate would go on and on talking about how much he enjoyed some things. Whether it was animals, books or video games, he would be a sunshine which Mima couldn't help but feel warm with him. This confession was an inflection point to their relationship, because Hayate being comfortable sharing this feeling only meant that Mima was the newest thing in Hayate’s list he likes.

Mima.- I… this isn't fair, Hayate. I was supposed to ask you out first.

Hayate.- Mima-san please answer me.

Mima.- (lets a tear fall) Of course I want to be your boyfriend.

After this answer Mima gets closer to Hayate, but to his surprise, Hayate stops him there.

Hayate.- Hold on right there. We're in public, I'd rather leave the caresses for my apartment.

Mima.- Oh you’re right, then let’s just enjoy the coffee and get you back to work. Then, we can share some time at your place.

It wasn't a fancy confession as Mima had in mind, but seeing Hayate being so open to him was more than enough for him. Mima knew that Hayate struggled with expressing his emotions since he rather overthink it . Nonetheless, this wasn't the case and Mima felt joyful about it. After a few minutes, Mima accompanies Hayate back to his work.

Shun.- Ugh I'm so exhausted from this homework. I finish one and it seems like they're multiplying each second.

Motoharu.-  Shun-kun, how long has it been since your homework was assigned?

Shun.- Ummm, like 3 weeks? Probably more.

Souma.- (giggles) Shun you're such a bad planner.

Motoharu.- Agree, I'd help you but it's better for you to learn your lesson. (laughs)

Shun.- Thanks for the encouragement you two…

Souma.- Alright, then what if I say we won't invite you to our beach trip if you don't finish?

Shun.- (gasps) AH? So rude, who put you in charge? I don't acknowledge your adulthood, so I'll be going on the trip.

Motoharu.- Shun-kun…

Shun.- What is it?

Motoharu.- You won't be going with us to the trip unless you finish.

Shun.- You too? (sighs) Then I'll ask for Mima-san and Hayate-san's opinion on this. Majority decides.

Hayate enters the cafeteria after his date with Mima. He's about to explain to Asami-san his sudden escape before Shun stops him.

Shun.- Hayate-san, would you like to take me on a beach trip?

Hayate.- (looks at the desk where Shun is sitting) As long as you're done with homework, then it's fine.

Both Motoharu and Souma start laughing when hearing Hayate’s reply. Hayate continued what he was doing leaving Shun with a hopeless look in his eyes.

Shun.- I can't believe you're making me do this…

Souma.- You're out of excuses, I'm sorry.

Motoharu.- (giggles) Good luck, Shun-kun.

After a hard working day, the cafeteria closes and Souma and Hayate start to clean up. Shun decided to leave early because he felt betrayed by 3 of his friends. As for Motoharu, he was still there and waiting for the other two to leave.

Motoharu.- Hayate-kun, is Takayuki okay?

Hayate.- Ah, sure. He was just altered earlier, now he's okay.

Souma.- Glad to hear that, where did you go though? I remember you left suddenly in the middle of your shift.

Motoharu.- True, where did you take Takayuki?

Hayate.- (blushes) Well I was hoping Shun would also be here to hear the story.

Souma.- That sounds like something awesome happened. Spill it out.

Hayate.- Well… we're boyfriends now.

Souma.- (excited) Congratulations! You sure took your time.

Motoharu.- Wait what? Are you going out with Takayuki?

Hayate.- (nods) Since this afternoon.

Motoharu.- That's great, I was worried that Takayuki would be alone by his 30s.

Hayate.- And well, that's all.

Souma.- But the details! We need to know how it happened.

Hayate.- (flustered) No, it's embarrassing to say. Leave it, we're dating already that's all. I'll get going, see you tomorrow.

Hayate leaves the cafeteria and heads to his apartment. He remembers that Mima and him would be spending time that day celebrating their relationship. Before entering the complex, Hayate goes to the convenience store and gets some noodles for dinner. Once he reached his floor, to his surprise, Mima was already waiting for him outside the door.

Hayate.- Mima-san! You should have told me that you were here already. What if you got sick by staying in the cold weather?

Mima.- Hey Hayate-kun. If I get sick, would you take care of me?

Hayate.- Of course, but I'd rather you stay healthy. I brought some noodles from the store for us to eat. Sorry if it's too simple, I didn't want to spend a lot of time cooking.

Mima.- It's okay. Shall we enter?

Hayate.- Sure. By the way, how about we finish the budget for tomorrow's presentation?

Mima.- Alright. But first, you promised me something in the afternoon.

Hayate.- What was it?

Mima.- This.

Mima leans his head on one of Hayate's shoulders while he embraces him in a loving touch. Hayate pats Mima’s hair and starts rubbing his head in Mima's chest. Mima slowly moves his hand towards Hayate’s cheek and kisses him delicately. Hayate’s lips started to be an addiction for Mima, they were so delicate and each kiss left him craving for more of those. They finally separate and look directly into the other’s eyes.

Mima.- I really hope that this never ends.

Hayate.- (hugs Mima from behind) I'm sure this is just the first day out of a lot more coming.

They both lean closer again and kiss gently. Both Hayate and Mima fell on cloud nine by having the other by his side. They started eating and worked on the budget while cuddling. No more words needed to be mentioned since just the other’s presence was enough for them to know that they'll be there for each other for a long time.
