Work Text:
It is said that monsters are at best ugly and scary, and at worst heartless killers that reign upon the darkness looking for an innocent prey to catch. Well, if you ask Suga, leader of the Beasts of Seoul gang, he certainly isn't going to disagree. On the contrary, he'll look at you with his piercing dark eyes and the corner of his lips will tilt upwards just slightly, the hint of a smirk playing on his face.
Well... Until he has met Kim Seokjin.
Let's go back a year in the past, when Suga's gang is terrorizing Seoul as soon as the night falls upon the city. All dressed in black, their wolfish grins are scaring the tourists away and the courageous citizens who would dare walking into Suga's territory. The walls are marked with their sign - a beast howling - and they know the pavement as if they were born in the streets. There isn't a shop, an alley or a club that has secrets for the gang. They aren't a lot, just six boys who rule over the city like ruthless kings, baseballs bats dangling from their hands like a logical continuity from their bodies. And when it's not bats, you can find them holding knifes, large wooden sticks - but never guns. They terrorize the population, yes, but they don't kill. They rule the city by spreading rumors about themselves, by making sure that the drugs and prostitute businesses are working properly. They scare the people away from them because they aren't good, they're monsters.
They're beasts whose Suga is the leader of.
He hasn't always been like this though. Suga had everything as a kid: busy parents who let him do whatever he wanted to, a nice house in a rich district of Seoul and every single thing he wanted, he had it. He wasn't that bad at school though too lazy to bother getting good marks. He didn't care anyway, his parents had enough money to buy him a diploma if he wanted to.
Instead of going to boring classes, Suga - back then called by his real name which is Min Yoongi - spent his days wandering around the city with his friends and the same thought that ran over and over again through his mind: 'One day, all of this will be mine'.
Until this famous rainy night of Autumn, when the police suddenly burst into his parents' house and arrested them right in front of the teenager's eyes for illicit trafic of drugs and money and others words Suga didn't understand. His parents almost went straight to jail, leaving behind them their son. But after a few visits to his father at the parlor, Yoongi discovered where the money had been hidden in the house and how he had two choices offered to him: either he could take the money and disappear to start a brand new life or he could take upon his parents' business and remain rich. Yoongi, quickly turned Suga, chose the latter but it had a price.
The darkness he shall stay in, leading his gang from the inside and a monster he shall become, shredding all of his layers of humanity to only keep his worst sides, those of a beast.
Back then, he had thought it would be a piece of cake, that it was worth the money but as he grew up, he realized how much of a burden the curse was. He couldn't run away from it nor could he ever go back in the daylight. There was absolutely nothing waiting for him there.
Unless someone was willing to accept him and his darkness, and maybe harness that light that was still inside of him.
"Boss! We got him!" A familiar voice chirps, dragging Suga back to reality. He looks up slowly and runs long fingers through newly bleached white hair. A whimper catches his attention and he watches as Jimin and Taehyung push an old man towards the table he is sitting in front. The man stumbles then falls on his knees, his body shaking in fear. Typical. Suga doesn't know how many times he has seen this situation before; people begging him for money or for more time. They're all the same, running after those bills in hope that it'll make their life better but when it comes to give back the money Yoongi has lent them, well, it happens to be more complicated. Normal people always complicate everything and it makes Suga sighs. He knows by heart how the situation is going to go.
"P-please! Give me some more time!!" The man pleads, looking up at Suga with glassy eyes. He feels nothing at the sight. "I'll give you back your money, I swear! But please don't take away my apartment!! My son is working really hard to get where he is right now and I can't do this to him!"
But Suga doesn't have the patience to deal with him now. He feels too tired. People are exhausting to make compromise with. Standing up, he waves for the duo to take the man away in one of their cells. Of course, it's not to keep them prisoners but just to scare them some more. They need it to understand with who they're truly dealing with.
Suga retires to his room and plops down on his bed, trying to block out the desperate cries of the old man that seems to echo through the walls and floors as he is thrown in the small cell made of rocks, a few floors beneath his loft. It'll just be yet another voice to haunt his nightmares, he thinks before he falls asleep.
It's two nights later that everything changes.
He is in study, reviewing with their youngest member Jungkook who owes them a lot of money when Namjoon walks in, looking properly uncomfortable.
"What is it?" Suga asks, putting down a file and leaning back on his seat.
"You know the guy we caught a couple of days ago?" Suga nods and gestures for him to keep going. "Well, I don't know how it happened but his son is here. Wanting to talk to the boss. He says he isn't going to leave without his father."
A pair of raised eyebrows in surprise turn to Suga. Nobody has ever come to them for this kind of reason. Everyone in the city knows how dangerous and feared they are. For a brief moment, Suga admires the gut of the kid. Then he goes back to his role of a beast and tells Namjoon to make him come inside so he can teach the kid a lesson.
Well, unless the kid isn't a kid.
A young man walks in with cheeks flushed from anger most likely and Suga can only appreciate the sight offered to him. Soft, auburn hair that seems red at the light of the few lights lightened up in the study fall just over a pair of intense, dark chocolate-like eyes that sparkle with a mix of anger and fear. The male is taller than Yoongi for sure and he has wide shoulders, he can't miss them with the way his knit sweater fits him perfectly. Legs that seem endless in a pair of black skinny jeans stride over to him quickly until Suga has to tilt his head to look up at the young man. There's no denying that he looks gorgeous but Suga doesn't allow himself to linger on this kind of thoughts. He doesn't do relationships and dates and all the shit that follows. Those are unnecessary distractions he doesn't need to be involved into.
"Free my father. He did nothing wrong!" The boy says, attempting to, maybe, look intimidating but Suga hears the shake in his voice, sees the fear in his orbs and the tension in his body.
"He owes me money. Didn't pay me back in time. That's what he gets." Suga shrugs and watches the face of the boy's fall.
"My father... He is sick... He can't work for a long time..." His eyes fill with tears before he falls on his knees, a common gasp echoing in the room by everyone but Suga whose eyes narrow slightly. "Please free him. I'm begging you! I'll do anything you want. I'll pay you back myself if I need to!"
Five heads turn to the leader who just stares at the boy, considering the offer. Now that he thinks about it, a sick old man is useless to him. But his son, well, that's another story. Suga leans forward and crosses his fingers, elbows resting on top of the desk so he is staring at the sobbing boy from over his hands. "Fine," He finally says, "I'm letting your father go free. But you, you'll be my prisoner until I decide that the debt have been paid off. And only then will you be able to leave."
"Hyung..." Taehyung mumbles, eyes darting back and forth between the now prisoner and his boss.
"Hoseok, take him to a room."
"Can I talk to my father a last time, please?" The boy looks up at Suga, his pretty face stained with tears, and Suga has to mentally remind himself who he is and that, fuck, he can't just accept every request coming from the prisoner. He is a heartless beast, a monster. His signature smirks appears on his face as he stands up and walks around his desk until he can crouch down in front of the boy.
"Keep dreaming, princess." He replies lowly, watches as the boy's eyes widen before he is dragged away by Hoseok out of the study to one of the free room of the loft he owns and lives in with the five other members of his gang. "Free his father. Don't harm him, we don't want to have a death on our minds, now do we? I'm tired, I'm going to sleep. We'll see about those files tomorrow."
The deal is shortly explained to the old man before he is thrown back out on the streets. Suga stares up at the ceiling, his hands behind his head while he wonders if, maybe, he has been too nice or too harsh. He usually doesn't deal with pretty sons.
With a deep, frustrated sigh leaving his lips, he rolls over on his side and tries to get some sleep, wondering how he is going to handle a stranger in his territory.
A few days later, Suga highly regrets his choice. "Hyung, he refuses to come out of his room and eat. I've been nice, I swear!" Jimin pouts, his chin resting on the back of the couch Suga is sitting on.
"He said that he doesn't want to see you or even eat anything we've cooked." Taehyung adds and Namjoon snorts in amusement until Suga glares at him. Groaning, he gets up and walks over to the prisoner's room who has refused to say anything to him, even his name. God, isn't he a handful. He stands in front of the door seconds later and clears his throat - it's not like him to knock on the door, he is in his loft after all and he isn't going to let anyone disturb the way he lives.
"You're going to die if you don't eat, princess."
"Go away! I don't want to talk to you or see you, or any of you beasts!"
"Fine, I'm letting you die then!" He barks at the door then rubs his face with his hands. He knows that he isn't going to let pretty boy die from hunger. That's not his style. Inhaling deeply, he tries to relax. "Look, you can come out at night when we're all busy with our gang stuff, okay? You won't have to see us and eat with us. Deal?"
For a supposed ruthless monster, Suga feels like he is way too kind towards the prisoner. But after hearing a conversation between Namjoon and Jungkook who were worried about how the boy would react to being locked 24/7 and surrounded by gang members, Yoongi has felt a bit of pity towards him.
"Deal." It comes softly but closer than he has expected and Suga furrows his eyebrows when he notices the strain in the other's voice. Has he been crying? Parting his lips to ask, he stops himself and kicks the door, shouting a 'Good!' even if it makes no sense before he stomps away and locks himself in his study.
But obviously, this too doesn't go as planned. The city has been pretty quiet lately - too quiet, if he listens to his instincts - and the boys have gotten nobody to scare off when they've gone wandering around. So now they are whining around the loft and Suga is about to lose patience when, suddenly, nothing. No more whines and groans, just the silence. He shakes his head, a quiet chuckle leaving his lips.
Suga is never going to admit it but he cares deeply about the five boys. How can he not? They've been by his side as long as he can remember. Back then in middle school, Namjoon and he were already playing pranks. Namjoon is really smart and Suga sometimes regrets that he has joined him in the gang. But then again, Namjoon knows the city by heart, every dark corner, every street, every bricks on the walls - he couldn't do what he does without him.
And then, the others followed one after another. Hoseok, Jimin, Taehyung and Jungkook. They are the five only person in the whole wide world that Suga trusts with his life just like they trust him with their lives. Those kids... Suga chuckles to himself when he hears Hoseok screeches at something before laughter fills wherever they are at the moment. But among those laughter, there is a foreign one. A soft, musical one that has Suga's insides warming up and clenching and fuck. What is going on?
He gets up from his bed and walks out of his room, slowly and silently making his way to where the commotion is coming from. It's the kitchen and there's a delicious smell coming from it; Suga glares down at his stomach when it grumbles. It can't possibly be the prisoner who has cooked, he has categorically refused to come out the room when they are here.
And yet, when Suga steps into the kitchen he sees Taehyung running after Jimin around the table. There's Hoseok laughing loudly at them and Jungkook is nibbling on a piece of carrot. By the stove, there's the prisoner with his back to him and Namjoon stands next to him, peeking curiously with his arms crossed over his chest. The most surprising is the smile on Namjoon's face and how relaxed they all seem to be. They look their age, they look like kids and not like darker versions of who they used to be. Suga furrows his eyebrows a little and clears his throat. All heads turn to him and he straightens up, rolling his shoulders back.
"What's going on? It's so loud, I can't sleep."
"Hyung!" Hoseok grins. "Seokjin hyung is cooking for us!"
Seokjin? Suga raises his eyebrows and looks at the prisoner who has now a name. A pretty name for a pretty face. Seokjin seems bashful and he looks down for a moment, the tip of his ears turning red; Suga has to look away because this guy is awfully cute.
"Ah." Is all he manages to say for a moment. Then he focuses back on who he is, clears his mind and narrows his eyes at Seokjin. "I thought you refused to see any of us."
"I did. I was just cooking when they came back from outside and, god, how can you not feed these kids? Look at Kookie, he is so skinny! They need to eat more than just instant noodles cups every so often. Are you trying to starve them? I wouldn't be so surprised since you're called a 'beast', but still! I just couldn't let them like that so I'm cooking."
The full ramble takes Suga aback, he is completely surprised but, not in a bad way. Seokjin is courageous, there's no denying. Clearly he has underestimated him, he seems much more than a crybaby. But Suga once again has to remind himself to not let himself getting distracted. He is aware that he feels a physical attraction for Seokjin - who can resist those doe eyes and plump lips and this body, anyway? But that's just a fleeting thought. Suga doesn't and will never allow himself to get involved in anything linked with the prisoner.
"Hyung, are you going to eat with us?" Taehyung asks, eyes blinking. Suga blinks back once then looks at Seokjin. He doesn't know why but he just does, as if asking for his permission, or for his opinion. Seokjin blinks at him then chews on his lower lip and turns back to the pot on the stove.
"Nah. I don't want to eat with the prisoner. I'm better than that." And with those words, he walks over to his study and ignores the offended gasp that leaves Seokjin's lips. But soon after laughter fills the loft once more and Suga can't focus on the papers he is looking at. Boy isn't he in trouble...
...Especially when it lasts for weeks. Seokjin is always around, taking care of the boys, cooking, cleaning around and muttering about the accumulated dust and god, who can live here properly it doesn't make sense. It almost feels like he is in his own home and yet, Suga has seen him many times getting lost in his thoughts, a shadow passing through his eyes filled with sadness. He has thought of freeing him many times... But the debt has to be paid off and releasing the pretty boy after a couple of weeks only isn't strong enough of a warning.
He stares out the window, hands clasped behind his back. He can't ignore the way Seokjin seems to brighten up each room he walks in. Despite being a prisoner, he is always wearing a smile on his face and cooking for them; the kids have even grown to like him - especially Jungkook and Taehyung who are stuck to him as soon as they're back to the loft. It's a bother, really. It wasn't supposed to happen.
A presence behind him cuts his train of thoughts and Suga waits for the person to join him by the window: it's Namjoon. "Hyung?" Suga hums to acknowledge him, eyes fixated to the scenery out the window. His city. "You should be nicer to Seokjin hyung. It's not easy for him to be here, you know... He misses his father a lot and knows that he is going to fail his exams to become a doctor. The youngers are trying to cheer him up but... Seokjin is afraid of you. Of what you could do."
"He should. I'm the leader of the gang, aren't I?"
"But you never kept a prisoner for that long before - and in your loft, not in the cells. Don't you think that Seokjin hyung could be... You know? The one who brings you out of the darkness?"
Suga clenches his jaw before he spins around, glaring daggers at Namjoon who instinctively takes a step back, holding his hands up in a pacific way. "He is not. And even if I did want for him to be that person, he would never want me. He deserves so much more."
"How can you know what he deserves if you refuse to talk to him and be nice to him though? Come on, hyung. We all know you aren't that horrible. Just spend some time with him. Like, it would be better for everyone else if we all have dinner together, for example. You don't want to hurt the kids' feelings, right?"
"You smartass." Suga mutters and drags his fingers through his hair. He has thought many times of being able to go outside in the daylight once again and live normally - without being a beast, without having to scare off people for money. It's tiring. It wasn't when he was younger and reckless and avid of those colorful bills he has grown to hate the sight of. But now, he almost regrets his inital choice and yes, when he looks at Seokjin, he has thought about being out in the open, watching him laugh and smile and having nice talks while Seokjin would cook - Before he gets carried away by his imagination, Suga looks at Namjoon once more but freezes when he sees the hopeful glint in his eyes. He hasn't considered how the other boys felt. They are probably craving for a normal life, too. To have friends, to go on dates, to do stupid things and laugh about it months later... To create memories. "Fine," He sighs deeply, looking away to ignore Namjoon's wide grin. "I'll have dinner with him."
Decision he regrets hours later when he finds himself facing his mirror and not knowing if he should wear casual clothes or better-looking clothes. He mentally reminds himself that this is not a romantic dinner or anything but he still feels nervous. He thinks of Namjoon who could have gone to College and get a great job; of Hoseok and Jimin and Taehyung who are bright kids with constant smiles on their faces: of Jungkook who should be enjoying high school instead of wandering down the streets at night. He can at least try for them. And maybe... Maybe good things could come out of his dinner - but he doubts it. He belongs to the darkness, that's all he knows.
After having put on a simple pair of ripped jeans and a large shirt, he walks to the kitchen only to find it empty and he can't help but to feel immediately stupid for feeling disappointed. God, what was he thinking about? That Seokjin would be willing to have dinner with him after he has put his sick father in a cell then traded him for Seokjin to keep a prisoner? Nobody in their right mind would do this and he has been absolutely stupid to even consider that things would change.
"Uhm..." Suga blinks once and turns around, his eyes falling on a sheepish-looking Seokjin. He looks stunning - but when does he not? His stomach does that little foreign thing of clenching and hurting and his heart beats faster in his chest. Suga doesn't recognize himself. "I didn't think you'd join me for dinner... I mean, Jiminie did tell me that you agreed but I honestly didn't believe him because, well, we can't say that we're getting along just fine."
Words are failing Yoongi. What is he supposed to reply to this? He wasn't even sure to come out of his room two seconds before he did. "Are you cooking?"
"Oh." Seokjin blinks once. "Oh! Yes, yes of course. I asked Namjoon about your taste because I don't really want you to hate me more than you already do and I asked Taehyung to go buy me some ingredients I needed - your kitchen personally hurts me and my feelings. The lack of proper items almost made me cry - in all honesty I was relieved at the sight of the rice cooker."
Yoongi looks down and cracks a smile. He didn't expect Seokjin to be so talkative, but he does feel relieved. He understands why the kids are stuck to him. He doesn't think about anything as he just listens to Seokjin's endless chatter and it feels just... It's nice. His loft feels less like a headquarter and more like a home, especially as the smell of the food is starting to fill the kitchen.
"Namjoon told me you were studying to be a doctor."
Seokjin turns around, holding a spatula in his hand and blinks a few times before he eventually nods, right before the silence turns uncomfortable. "I did. Now that I am here, I probably missed too much classes and exams so...Yeah, that's too bad." He gives a small shrug and even attempts to smile but it doesn't reach his eyes. Suga curls his fingers on his lap to stop himself from walking over to Seokjin to hug him.
"Why a doctor though?" He manages to ask once Seokjin has turned back to whatever he is cooking.
"Because I want to help people. I haven't been... I was a kid when my mom died and I was unable to help her as much as I wanted to. And my dad has been sick for a while now. I want to be doctor so no child lose his parents." That's when Suga realizes how different they are. They are opposites. While he and his gang are terrifying the city, Seokjin is simply a good person. He wants to do good things and be a good person and Suga will never, ever allow himself to taint someone like him. It takes all of his willpower to not run away to his bedroom. "Anyway, it's probably too late now." Seokjin sighs then brings two plates of pasta cream to the table. "I didn't add poison in there, I promise."
Suga raises his eyebrows a little. He hasn't even considered this option, Seokjin is too kind of a person and it makes him chuckle quietly. "Telling me this is only going to make me suspicious, you know?"
He watches the pretty boy's face heats up within seconds. Maybe Seokjin is the most dangerous, he thinks briefly.
He doesn't have time to taste the pasta that the kids are bursting through the main door and Suga stands up immediately, reaching for the nearest weapon: the knife on the table. And if he instinctively stands in front of Seokjin to protect him, he doesn't have time to dwell on it.
"Hyung! The Wolfs from Busan are coming here!" Hoseok shouts while Namjoon opens up a closet and hands the bats over to the other members. They tie black bandanas around their faces and places themselves strategically around the main room so they can attack, just in case.
The Wolfs from Busan. Suga turns furious just by the thought of it. They are a dozen maybe, and Suga's gang's enemy, after the police. They both deal with drugs and have a huge influence on their city. The only but important difference is that the Wolfs kill.
"Well, well, well." A voice singsongs, one Suga knows all too well and he has just the time to gesture for Seokjin to hide himself in the kitchen that Daehyun is walking into his loft, his signature smug smirk present on his face. "Sweet Suga. I thought I'd pass by since we are in the city. It's quiet as always."
"It only means I'm doing my job properly. I don't think you've been invited here though."
"Come on," Daehyun grins, stepping closer to Suga. "Is that how you welcome your old friend?"
"We aren't friends."
"Riiiiight." He laughs and Suga feels irritated. He despises Daehyun like never and he is probably one of the only person Suga wishes he could kill but that would mean falling to his level - which Suga refuses to do. He'll never allow himself to take somebody's life. "You haven't changed, still so welco--" A sneeze. Silence falls over the room and Suga glances over at Namjoon who looks back at him worriedly. Seokjin. "Oh? Do you have someone else in here? Why don't you introduce us to each other?"
"Go to hell, Daehyun." It makes him laugh loudly, in that sick, mad way Daehyun only is able to convey.
"I am there already, Suga! Now show me who's that you're hiding." Daehyun steps closer to Suga who narrows his eyes. Never will he let him approach Seokjin. He'll not even get a glimpse from him.
"I'm not going to repeat myself. Go. To. Hell." Suga grits through his teeth. The tension rises up and he can see the others ready to attack if Daehyun does something as small as getting closer to the kitchen.
"Hmmm, nope!" Daehyun snickers. Now Suga is facing a dilemma: if he does punch his enemy, the wolves would come up in here and everyone would have to fight. He isn't sure he can protect Seokjin this way. The safest thing to do is for Seokjin to come here but the sole thought of it makes Suga sick. He knows that Daehyung isn't going to give up either and he might sneak into the loft while Seokjin is left alone. That's never going to happen.
"Seokjin, come here." Suga calls out and glares at Taehyung who parts his lips to protest. He has no choice. His jaw clenches when he feels the presence of the pretty boy soon next to him and when he glances up at him, Suga can't help but to feel surprised by the smile he finds on the male's face.
"Seokjin, huh?" Daehyun inquires, running his eyes over the boy's body. The way he licks his lips slowly and suggestively makes Suga's blood boil. "That's one pretty catch you got here, Suga. Who is he?"
"My prisoner."
The leader of the Wolves hums lowly and steps closer to Seokjin. Suga knows that if he moves closer to him, Seokjin will become a target. He'll be recognized as the Beasts' weakness, as the one person the Wolves could hurt to get through Suga's gang. So he acts casual about it, stuffs his hands in his pocket and while his fingers curl around the knife he has hidden, he watches Daehyun studying Seokjin who doesn't move nor doesn't look scared at all.
"How about you join my gang, hm? I could use a pretty face like yours... If you know what I mean." Daehyun winks and Suga can see Hoseok making a gagging gesture. Seokjin seems to consider the offer and suddenly Suga feels uneasy, nervous. What if he chooses to leave? What if Daehyun has enough charisma to take his prisoner away? The loft would lose its light. Suga ignores the voice that tells him that he would be the one losing his light.
"Ah, I'm sorry. But I am a prisoner and my debt hasn't been paid off yet. I can't leave until Suga tells me to." Suga ducks his head and suppress a smile, feeling stupid to have this reaction when Seokjin has only stated the truth. Daehyun doesn't linger much longer but doesn't forget to promise to come back soon and Suga hears the threat in his voice -- the tension doesn't disappear from the room until ten good minutes later, when they don't hear any more voice down in the street. The Wolves are always so noisy, they enjoy making themselves known.
One by one, the boys relax and flop down either on the couch or on the floor, all relieved that they didn't have to use their bats or even start a fight. Suga lets out a quiet breath then slowly turns to Seokjin, dragging his fingers through his hair. "How a--"
Seokjin gasps loudly, his hands covering his mouth as he stares at him with doe eyes widely open. It would have been comical if it wasn't for the worry he can see in the boy's orbs. "You're bleeding!"
Before he can realize what is happening, Seokjin has wrapped his fingers around his wrist and is tugging him to the bathroom, closing the door once they are both inside. While Seokjin is rummaging through the cabinets, Suga looks down at his hand and there's a bleeding cut through his palm. Not deep enough to be worringly but now that he is aware of it and the adrenaline has lessened, it does sting. Seokjin sits down next to Suga on the rim of the bathtub and gently takes his hand, firstly dabbing at it with a wet cotton to remove the excess of blood. His moves are careful and precise, gentle even. Suga runs his eyes over his face and watches how focused he is, the way he is chewing on his lower lip and how he scrunches up his nose a little when he notices the amount of blood he has cleaned up.
"I can take care of myself, you know..." Seokjin whispers quietly and Suga is so focused on how his hand is warming up under his touch that he almost misses his words. He looks up at him and raises an eyebrow. Seokjin frowns in return before he looks back down at Suga's hand, slowly wrapping a bandage around his hand. "You didn't have to act all 'grrrr' on him to protect me... I'm just your prisoner."
"This is precisely why I did it." Suga mutters quietly and looks back at Seokjin who blinks cluelessly at him. "You're my prisoner. You're under my watch. And until I say so, you're mine." The words leave his mouth before he can even think about it and he watches Seokjin's cheeks turn bright red once again. Suga finds himself liking to have this effect on the male even though that's not exactly what he meant to say. To his surprise, Seokjin nods slowly and bites down on his lower lip.
"I understand. Thank you for wanting to protect me. I feel sorry that you got hurt though..." They lock gazes when Seokjin looks up at him once more and Suga finds himself wanting to kiss him, slowly and deeply, he wants to feel his lips against his own and he wants to hear what kind of noises Seokjin would make if he bites down on his lower lip.
The spell breaks when someone knocks at the door. "Suga hyung, Seokjin hyung? Everything's alright?" It's Jungkook. Seokjin blinks once then rushes to open the door and softly reassures the younger boy with smiles and gentle touches. Suga watches them and feels his heart swelling with a feeling he can't name so he gets up and walks out the bathroom, unaware of Seokjin's eyes following him.
Nobody sleeps really well that night and when Yoongi gets up because he hasn't eaten dinner and feels hungry, he finds the six boys in the living room, all cuddled up in blankets and watching television. Taehyung, Jimin and Hoseok are forming a cute trio on one couch while on the other, Seokjin has his arms around Jungkook who is dozing off, Namjoon focused on his phone next to them. There's blankets everywhere and pillows - Suga didn't even know he had that much of them - as well as buckets of what seems to be snacks. Suga this time doesn't fight back what he wants and he sits down between Seokjin and Namjoon, reaching over for a bucket of potatoes chips. Nobody comments and for just one night, they aren't part of a gang and Seokjin isn't their prisoner.
Suga briefly thinks that they look like a family when he glances over at Seokjn and sees him stroking Jungkook's hair. He allows himself to relax and leans back comfortably, sneaking once again a glance over to Seokjin; but this time Seokjin is looking back at him. They share a smile, complices. And when Seokjin's head falls on his shoulder as he has fallen asleep along the other kids, Suga lets himself become Yoongi for a short moment and presses his nose into the man's auburn hair, cherishing this instant like never before.
The following days and nights are different. For almost a whole week, the Beasts are outside to make sure that Daehyun's gang hasn't created chaos. And if something sounds or looks suspicious, they make sure to show who are the leaders of the city. Suga only comes outside at night and is locked in his study during the day; not only because he spends hours on the phone with drug dealers and other gangsters under his watch but mostly because he has to avoid Seokjin. Seokjin and his warm smile and positive energy and his welcoming arms, they all have become Suga's biggest weakness. It has been too much for him when the pretty boy has started to visit his dreams. So he ignores him, doesn't respond to his questions through the door and doesn't eat the food he leaves in front of it. He ignores the kids' worries and tell them to focus on their job instead of being concerned by someone who will eventually disappear from their lives. It's harsh but it's the truth. Suga leans back in his seat and tilts his head back, rubbing a hand over his face. As soon as he'll free Seokjin, he'll become a memory and they'll all be engulfed by the darkness, left with the ghost of a warm presence that once took care of them.
If he had been normal then, yes, maybe Suga would have allowed himself to grow closer to the male, awkwardly probably, but things still would have been easier.
Alas, that's not his reality. More than himself being hurt, he has realized that he is terrified of something happening to Seokjin and no matter how strong-willed he is, he would be useless against a knife or worse, a gun. The only thought of Seokjin's blood coming out of his body and taking his life away makes Suga shiver and shut his eyes in distress. This feeling is foreign to him and he doesn't understand how, in less than two months, Seokjin has been able to have this effect on him.
But now he can't go back and the best thing to do is to hurt his prisoner, to reject him, to put walls between them so none of the gang could be harmed in any way. He is pretty sure that Daehyun has a plan and it puts him on edge. He doesn't know what to expect and wants to be ready at all possibilities - he'd never forgive himself if something happens because he has been distracted by his own feelings.
The red numbers of his desk clock show 3:48AM when Suga finally dares to come out of the study. He stretches his body and runs his fingers over his stomach, grimacing when it grumbles. There's a note on the fridge: the kids are out patrolling. They've been nervous too. Aware of the tension in the loft and afraid of the following and unpredictables events. Suga sighs then opens the door of the fridge and notices a large bowl surrounded by a transparent wrapper. He wonders if he can eat it when he sees a post it with his name on it. Seokjin has saved food for him: there's a whole compartment of the fridge just for him, little notes with cute yet badly drawn characters on the corners who are smiling happily at him resting on top of each covered dish.
Now, Suga wants to both scream at Seokjin and kiss him. He doesn't make hating him easier and it's getting frustrating. He has never seen someone like him and even if Hoseok and Taehyung are both great kids, none of them are as warm as Seokjin. He is just... He is like a precious gem that should be protected at all costs. And god, how much Suga wants to be the one to do this but... No. Seokjin deserves better than a monster.
Someone like him isn't worth of love.
Sighing deeply, he unwraps the bowl from its wrapper and warms up the food in the microwave, alone with his thoughts. And that's how he'll continue his life: lonely. He knows that at some point, the kids will ask for their freedom - no matter how faithful they are to the gang, he sees in their eyes whenever they watch television or wander outside in the darkness that they want and need so much more than a life spent as a beast. It does scare him to be left alone but he has accepted his fate long ago. It doesn't make him any happier though.
He is almost done with his meal when he hears a door being opened then closed seconds later. He tilts his head to the side and mentally wishes that Seokjin isn't going to join him. Not because he doesn't want to see him but because he isn't sure he'll be able to resist him after not seeing him for a whole week. Then, the same noises. The door opens and closes for a whole minute until Suga can't take it anymore and he gets up, stomping over to Seokjin's room with a small frown on his facial features as he wants to appear threatening and not like he is happy to see him. Which he is not. Not at all.
He is neither threatening or looking happy because just as he faces the door, Seokjin opens it and almost walks straight into him, both wearing identical expression of surprise.
"What are you doing?" Suga blurts out, sounding way too soft to his liking. Seokjin's face flushes and very much like the door, he opens and closes his mouth for a few seconds before he cracks a small, sheepish smile that has Suga looking away. "Shouldn't you be sleeping?"
"I am waiting for the kids to come back so I can feed them... And I heard you in the kitchen so I wasn't sure whether I would be welcomed or not..." Seokjin admits and looks down, tugging nervously on the sleeves of his sweater. Which is actually Suga's. His eyes widen a little at the sight and he feels a burst of desire exploding through him. That's it. He gives up.
He is under Seokjin's spell and doesn't want to break it.
"Ah." He manages to croak out and clears his throat soon after, rubbing the back of his neck. He misses the way Seokjin smiles at him but not how he wraps his fingers around his wrist and tugs him towards a door. Suga doesn't resist.
"So Taehyung told me about this door that leads to the rooftop," Seokjin explains with a smile as he opens the door that reveals a staircase. He glances over at Suga with glinting eyes and Suga thinks that he is in trouble when he feels himself smiling back and shifts his hand so he is now holding Seokjin's. The pretty boy's smile widens. "And technically, it's still a part of the building so it's not like I'm getting out, right?"
Suga nods and Seokjin opens another door that leads to the rooftop. They find themselves watching over the city plunged in the darkness of the night. Suga doesn't see the stars when he looks up at the sky but it's okay, he can live with that as long as Seokjin is next to him. And he'll most likely regret his actions in the morning, after he has slept properly, but right now he just wants to be a boy who likes another boy. He turns his attention to Seokjin who is busy looking at the sky with a smile on his face and Suga knows that he is going to make a stupid decision tonight.
"The city looks really pretty from up here," Seokjin sighs happily, his eyes though moving to Suga's. "But it must be so difficult to lead it from here... From the darkness. You could do so much more if you'd let yourself be happy, Suga. Not everything has to be all dark, you know..."
Suga smiles and looks away from the pretty boy who makes his heart both crazy and at peace. He is a mess but he doesn't hate the feeling. His eyes run over the lightened up horizon by the street lights. He could, he definitely could give up everything and starts anew, maybe with Seokjin, but he isn't going to. Being a monster, hiding in the darkness, that's all he knows, that's his curse given by his own parents. A poisoned gift. What would he do if he lets himself go outside? He doesn't know, he'd be lost, scared and that's not something he ever allows himself to be.
"I could help you out, if you want..." Seokjin murmurs, biting down on his lower lip as he doesn't look away from Suga. Feeling it, Suga looks back at his prisoner and he wonders for a moment what Seokjin means by that. But he doesn't want to spend too much time on dissecting his words, it's too dangerous and he'd give himself false hope for nothing as he knows the outcome of this situation beforehand.
"Life isn't a fairtytale, princess." He smiles, but it doesn't reach his eyes. He brings Seokjin's hand to his lips and gives the back of it a light kiss, the only time he allows himself to touch his skin with more than just his hand. His lips are tingling with need. "Tell me, what's your biggest wish?"
"What?" Seokjin blinks, the tip of his ears red from the unexpected sweet behavior coming from Suga. He purses his lips then looks down, sighing quietly. "I want to see my sick father."
It makes Suga smiles. He knew it. He'll never be more for Seokjin than the one who made him prisoner and took him away from his father who needed him. But for him, Seokjin is the light, the happiness, he is home and everything else Suga has dreamed of but that remains unreachable. Letting go of the male's hand, he stuffs his own in his pockets and curls his fingers a little as he turns to look at his territory. "Go. You're free. The debt has been paid off." He forces himself to say and doesn't ignore Seokjin's surprised gasp. They turn silent then Seokjin wraps his fingers around Suga's arm, biting down on his lower lip.
"Thank you, thank you for everything Suga... And I'll be back, I promise. I'll come back to you, if you allow me to."
And with those words, Suga watches as Seokjin runs out of the rooftop, out of the loft and out of his life. He can go back to who he was before Seokjin came to shake his world. He turns back to look at the city and tries to convince himself that he'll be fine, that those two months were just distraction that he'll forget about soon enough.
But inside of him, Suga knows. He knows how he has let go of his light and that nobody else will ever be able to go through his darkness the way Seokjin did.
When he comes back one hour later into the loft, Suga is greeted by silence. He can almost imagine that Seokjin is locked into his room for some reason and that he'll be then cooking for him but he doesn't let himself imagine this for too long. It hurts too much. He walks into the kitchen and opens the fridge to drink something fresh but instead sees all the food with his name written on colorful post-its and it makes his eyes shut painfully just as he slams the door close.
He slides down against the fridge until he is sitting, his legs bent as he rests his forearms on top of his knees, his head tilted down in sorrow. If he was truly a beast, he'd be howling in pain. But he is just human, Suga realizes. And his heart hurts because he longs for someone he can't have. Because he has let go of that one person who could have changed his life for the better.
Minutes then hours tick by and Suga still doesn't move. He doesn't have the strength to do so. He thinks about Seokjin. Seokjin laughing, smiling, cooking, playing around with the kids, falling asleep on his shoulder, holding his wrist, being careful, being lovely, being him. His whole body, mind, heart and soul craves for Seokjin.
So when the door bursts open, he lifts his head up with hopeful eyes but instantly recognizes the footsteps as Namjoon's. His heart falls to his stomach in disappointment.
"Hyung! Hyung, where are you?" The panic in his voice brings Suga back to reality and he gets up, walking over to where his friend is. Namjoon looks distressed, his eyes wild and looking everywhere until they settle on Suga. "Hyung..."
"What's wrong? What's going on?"
"There has been a murder, hyung." Suga's blood freeze in an instant and he clenches his jaw, the lines of his face hardening. "Some drug dealer has been killed but... Our sign has been left on the crime scene, hyung. They've arrested Hoseok and Kookie. Jimin and Taehyung are hiding in our second headquarters but it's looking bad, hyung, really."
Suga rubs a hand over his face and inhales deeply, trying to think of a plan to make Hoseok and Jungkook out of jail. He also knows what Namjoon is thinking of within seconds: it's most likely Daehyun's attack. He has killed so the police is turned against them. And as if on cue, multiples policemen storm into the apartment with their loud, threatening voices and their guns raised. Namjoon and Suga step back, but they are pretty much screwed. Caught like birds in cage.
Pursing his lips, Suga looks around for anything that could help him but there's absolutely nothing he can do. He feels helpless for the first time in his life - even more than when his parents got arrested and he wonders for a second if they felt this way, too. What follows, Suga can't stop it: four of the policemen turn their guns towards their colleagues and kill them with a bullet right through the head; the sight of brains and blood splattering all over the walls are making Namjoon gag and Suga has to look away. Five bodies fall to the ground, liveless.
And then, that familiar sick laugh fill the loft and Suga feels his blood freeze. Daehyun. Of course he would be the brain behind this attack. His fingers curl into tight fists as the Wolf steps into his loft. He thinks about the kids who are in trouble because of that asshole and Suga sees red, he steps closer, ready to kill him. He'll do it, he'll not hesitate. He has touched his family and Suga will never forgive him.
Then, Daehyun drags a familiar body shape behind him but Suga doesn't want to believe it. A familiar whimper makes him turn livid from rage. Daehyun has gotten Seokjin and that's the last straw that breaks the camel's back. He watches with hard eyes as Daehyun tugs Seokjin, his Seokjin, in front of him and presses a knife to the fair skin of his neck until a drop of blood rolls down his neck.
"Let. Him. Go." Suga growls, ready to unleash the beast within him to protect what's his. Daehyun looks surprised for one second maybe but his signature smirk stretches across his face once again while he drags the tip of the knife across Seokjin's cheek. "I'm going to kill you if you touch him any longer."
"I can't wait to see that." Daehyung laughs and pushes Seokjin aside who gasps and stumbles, falling behind one of the couches. It gives him somewhere to hide, Suga thinks and throws himself at Daehyun, delivering a punch straight into his jaw who has them both falling over. The other wolves members run away as the police sirens grow closer and Namjoon rushes to Seokjin to put him in a safer place but he refuses to budge from his spot. His eyes are stuck on Suga who delivers punch after punch to Daehyun's face but soon Daehyun takes the advantage and punches Suga in the stomach who is left gasping for air. Namjoon wraps his arms around Seokjin as he is about to get up to help him out but instead finds himself struggling to get away from Namjoon, crying out Suga's name.
Tears are running down his face and when Suga sees him for a second, it's enough to make his entire body boil with rage - but Daehyun doesn't let himself get beaten up. Policemen are walking into the loft but they freeze, not knowing whether they should stop the two guys fighting or take away the dead bodies of their colleagues. Seokjin's pleads for Suga fill the apartment as the leader of the Beasts is curled up on the floor while Daehyun is striving to beat him up over and over and over again. Suga coughs up blood and he can see his end. Just like that, with Seokjin crying for him and dead people all over his loft and his family broken apart by that one guy.
As if he is going to let that happen.
Suga raises his leg and kicks Daehyun in the stomach strongly enough to push him back before he crawls to a dead policeman and struggles to get his gun out but once he manages to get it, he has a firm grip on it and he is well-decided to kill that Wolf once for all. But Daehyun doesn't give up and shouts in all of his madness as he throws himself once more to Suga; they roll around while fighting and there's more and more blood until--
A shotgun.
And then, the silence.
Daehyun spits blood, the light in his eyes disappearing and Suga pushes him over as he lets him to die. He can't do much more when he feels himself dying, with that knife planted into his stomach. Well, that is not exactly how he has imagined this situation to end but the most important is that Seokjin and his kids are alive and well.
"Suga!" Seokjin scrambles up to his feet when Namjoon lets go of him before he kneels down next to Suga, tears still flowing down his cheeks. He runs his eyes over Suga's body, his pretty doe eyes widening. "No, no, no, no... You can't die, you can't... I came back for you, didn't I? I told you I'd come back!"
Suga coughs up blood and feels weaker by the second but he is happy that Seokjin is by his side for his last moment on Earth. Maybe in their next life, it'll be easier; maybe they'll be friends or idols of the same group or something. "I'm sorry that I have acting like an idiot towards you... You deserve so much more--"
"No, what are you saying--" Seokjin shakes his head, sniffling. Suga slowly lifts up his hand and cups the pretty boy's cheek who instantly leans into his touch, his own hand coming up to rest on top of Suga's. His touch is so warm. It comforts him. "Please don't leave me alone... I need you, Suga."
"I'm sorry--" Suga repeats and winces, his eyes falling shut. He wants to look at Seokjin one last time so he forces his eyes open and they lock eyes. He remembers the way Seokjin looked at him with those same glassy eyes when he begged for his father's freedom. Now he is asking for him to stay but they both know he can't. Not when he is the one bleeding out over the floor. "Thank you for...bringing me light and hope..."
Suga closes his eyes and lets himself being surrounded by the darkness one last time.
Until he finds himself opening his eyes once again. He feels groggy and his whole body is sore but he feels very much alive which surprises him. A groan leaves his lips as he tries to understand what is going on because he really has no clue. By far, from what he can see without moving much his head, it's all white; maybe he is in Heaven but he doubts he has a place there, considering his past. He slowly tries to move his legs, his arms - one of his hands is blocked by something and when he tries to sit up, he groans loudly at the pain shooting through his stomach.
He hears a gasp, one that sounds very much familiar and a second later, Seokjin's face is hovering over his own. God, he looks terrible... Terribly handsome. His hair looks like a mess, his eyes are red and puffy and his lips are dried but Suga doesn't think he has seen someone look ever gorgeous before. "You're awake!"
"That I am..." Suga mumbles, a small smile forming on his lips because he just can't stop himself from smiling when he sees how relieved the other seems to be, the lines of his face softening. "Mind telling me what happened?"
"You died. I mean, not really. You lost consciousness and we all thought you died but luckily the medics arrived just in time and believe it or not but the policemen found evidences that Daehyun and his gang were behind the attack. They also found the cameras in your loft and understood that you were innocent from start to end-- Which is a relief. The kids are safe, by the way. I sent them over to my father's apartment to rest and I told them I'll call them when you'll wake up - which is now."
Seokjin moves to get up but Suga grabs his wrist and tugs him back to his intial spot, on the bed. "Later." He mutters, his pale cheeks turning pink. "Why did you stay?"
"Because I like you." Seokjin says with a new found confidence and it makes Suga's heart skip a beat. He doesn't have time to answer that Seokjin is rambling once more. "I promised myself that if you ever woke up, I'd confess my feelings to you so there it is. I know that it's like, the worst timing ever but it's less cliché than telling you when you were dying. Which I was about to do, for the record." He inhales deeply, the tip of his ears bright red as he looks down and reaches for Suga's hand, lacing their fingers together. "I know that you're afraid of stepping into the unknown but if you let me guide you... If you let me take you out the darkness-- No, if you let me catch your own light and show you how beautiful this world can be...Sug--"
"My name's Yoongi." Suga cuts him off, wondering how in hell is he still alive after listening to Seokjin. "Min Yoongi. I'm 23 years old and I'm jobless." He looks down at their joined hands, giving it a squeeze. "And I like you too." When he looks up, Seokjin is beaming and his eyes are sparkling and Suga, now Yoongi, feels like he is about to die, once more. "Stop that." He ends up grunting.
"Stop what?" Seokjin blinks cluelessly.
"Looking so adorable!"
"Well, you're not a leader anymore so you can't give me orders."
"But I'm your boyfriend so. Stop looking so adorable."
"Or what?"
Seokjin raises his eyebrows in a challenging way and Yoongi sits up despite the pain to kiss Seokjin on the lips. He feels his boyfriend smile against his lips and he can't help but to smile too before he has to lay down again with a low groan, his free hand coming up to rest on his stomach. He has underestimated the pain of being stabbed.
"Alright grandpa, time to rest."
"Shut up."
"You wish."
The pretty boy laughs gleefully and Yoongi pulls him down next to him so they're both laying down, Seokjin curling up next to him and tracing the shape of his face with a fingertip. That's how they fall asleep and that's how the kids find them hours later, all surrounding the bed with cheeky grins on their faces.
Yoongi throws a pillow towards Taehyung and Jimin who are making kissing faces but he is still weak so it lands on his legs, making the younger boys mock him - but he doesn't mind and in this hospital room, Yoongi doesn't feel the weight of the curse anymore. Now, he has just to learn how to be a normal human being and he is pretty sure that as long as Seokjin is by his side, he'll be just fine out in the light.
