A sweet aroma filled Kaatima’s nose as she entered her parents’ home. The floor boards gently creaked underneath her boots and, behind her, she heard Raz shut the door. The home was quiet and there was no sign of anyone else. For once, she was the first of her siblings to arrive home for the festive season.
While Raz set their bags and weapons down, near where they had entered, Kaatima headed to where she knew the kitchen to be. The aroma grew stronger and had her mouth watering; she had greatly missed her mother’s cooking.
When she entered the kitchen, she found her mother, Azita, standing by the hearth, stirring the cooking pot. At the sound of her footsteps, she looked up from the stew she was cooking and her amber eyes lit up immediately upon seeing her daughter.
“Oh Kaatima!” she cried as she left what she was doing so that she could hug her.
“This one told you she would be back in time,” she replied, returning her embrace.
“Indeed you did and this one is glad to see you unharmed. And Raz too! She did not know you were coming.” she exclaimed as she pulled away from Kaatima and noticed him entering the kitchen. She immediately pulled him into a hug as well.
Raz chuckled. “Of course, he would not miss it for the world.”
“You two have travelled such a long way! You must be starving, sit! Sit!” she told them. “The stew will be done soon!”
Kaatima and Raz did as she told them. Once the stew was done and had been served, Azita joined them at the table, with a bowl of her own. As they ate, they told her of their most recent journey, like they did every time they visited.
